Research park begins to take shape

Developments south of the campus will provide both apartments and landscaping.

Research companies may soon be hurrying to move to the new Innovation Campus research park project in Brookings. The campus is made up of 125 acres of state-owned land that will soon be used for research and businesses. It is expected that by the end of 2009 there may be anywhere from four to six buildings, and following this, another two to three buildings per year, said Van Fishback, chair of the Growth Partnership and president and CEO of Fishback Financial Corporation.

Thanksgiving doesn't have to be a gut-buster

It is probably hard for many SDSU students to believe that hate exists on their campus. One SDSU group recently came face-to-face with the proof that it does. A couple of weeks ago, the Gay- Straight Alliance (GSA) found a Facebook group that directly attacked one of its members.

New plans are being made to help improve student dining services

Student dining hours, accommodations and options are being adjusted for convenience.

Administrators are analyzing how The Union is going to meet the dining needs of the proposed 400-bed residence hall on the southeast side of campus. The current proposal that must be approved by the Board of Regents (BOR) at its next meeting includes adding dining space, integrating creative food options, introducing a service center, renovating The Union kitchen and expanding hours of operation.

Thanksgiving may only be one day, but for SDSU students, it is steeped in tradition, ranging from the traditional to the ridiculous. The first Thanksgiving is considered to be in 1621; however, it was not until years later that it became a national holiday.

How much money does it cost to run a college?

Last year, SDSU had a $165 million operating budget; tuition covered 35 percent of the cost.

Running a college is expensive. It costs more than what is paid in tuition and fees. Much more. Not even student loans could pay for it all. Public universities like SDSU receive funding from both the federal and the state governments. Other sources also contribute money that benefits SDSU students.

SDSU's Fun Run promotes secondhand smoke awareness for students

SDSU Tobacco Coalition is hosting a run and walk to celebrate the Great American Smoke Out.

SDSU Tobacco Coalition is hosting a 5k Fun Run and Walk to bring awareness about the dangers of secondhand smoking. The 3.1 mile run will start at 4 p.m. on Nov. 20. Sign-up is from 12 p.m. until 4 p.m. on the day of the event. The Fun Run will begin at the front of The Wellness Center and from there travel down Eighth Street.

New store helps capture memories

A new downtown scrapbooking store carries everything needed to create beautiful projects.

For someone looking for a creative outlet and a fun way to capture meaningful memories, the new Journals of the Heart store in Brookings can fill that desire. Opened by Carol Jung in June of this year, Journals of the Heart is a scrapbooking store filled with creativity, warmth and not to mention, plenty of ribbons and stamps.

SDSU's different cultures join together in celebration

Students enjoyed learning about each other's traditions at International Night 2008.

An inviting buffet banquet, cultural songs and dances and an around-the- world fashion show were all part of International Night 2008. The event was held Nov. 9 in the Volstorff Ballroom and was hosted by the International Relations Club. The few hours of presentation were the result of much planning and prep work.
