Students may see rates fall in fall

International students to receive 'a real benefit' from BOR's new insurance contract.

Next year, some of the international students at SDSU will save a great deal of money on their required health insurance plan. Currently, all international students taking credit hours and their dependents who do not have health insurance are required to buy the health insurance plan that SDSU offers.

Record breaking day at Dairy Bar ends in theft

Somewhere between $2,000 and $2,500 stolen from safe, almost $100 from tips at Dairy Bar one weekend.

After a day of record-breaking sales, the SDSU Dairy Bar fell victim to theft. According to Anne Owens, the Dairy Bar manager, someone broke into the Dairy Bar sometime between the evening of April 4, a Friday, and the morning of April 7, a Monday. She said the thief took approximately $2,000-$2,500 in cash from the safe and almost $100 from the student employee tip jar.

The SDSU Chess Club has been around for a long time. Few remain who know about the early years. The club has never been big, but the members are always very excited about chess and love to play the game. Currently, about five members come consistently, with others coming in and out as they can make it to meetings.

Jackrabbits to run for State House

Three former SDSU students are running in the upcoming South Dakota State Legislature election. Jason Frerichs graduated from SDSU in 2007 and is running for a seat in District 1, Mitch Fargen graduated in May 2007 and is vying for a spot in District 8 and Travis Lape is running for a District 19 seat (Lape currently attends the University of Sioux Falls but spent his 2005-2006 here at SDSU.

Regents eventually will require laptops for every state university student

Regents' initiative has potential for students but should not be rushed.

Future SDSU students will be required to have a laptop under a program implemented by the Board of Regents. "The goal is to integrate technology and use it as a tool in teaching," said Students' Association (SA) Vice President Eric Hanson. The Mobile Computing Initiative involves all six state universities, according to Paul Truman, the BOR director of academic assessment.

Undergraduates can explore new colleges through National Student Exchange program

An average of 20 SDSU students each year take advantage of travel opportunities.

The National Student Exchange program offers a unique opportunity for SDSU students to study at nearly 200 colleges and universities across the United States and Canada. Through the program, undergraduate students with a 2.5 GPA can attend the NSE university of their choice for up to one calendar year, not necessarily consecutive terms.

For many students at SDSU, Hilton M. Briggs Library - a.k.a. the on-campus library- holds many books, journals and other academic and scholarly sources that are necessary for students to write the many papers and do the research required to pass classes. What many students don't realize, however, is that the library also offers fiction books - ones that are less academic and more to read just for fun.

Jackrabbit Stampede kicks off spring season

SDSU hosted the 54th annual Jackrabbit Stampede Rodeo at the Swiftel Center on April 10 to 13, marking the start of the spring collegiate rodeo season. Fans of South Dakota's state sport got to enjoy saddle bronc riding, bareback riding, bull riding, team roping, calf roping, tie down roping, steer wrestling, breakaway roping, goat tying and barrel racing at the four-day event.
