Eval team deserves more attention

The SDSU livestock evaluation team placed first at the National Meat Animal Evaluation.

The competition was held in Brookings March 24-26 and consisted of five parts: meats, market, livestock, breeding livestock and communication.

This is the second time the SDSU team has received such a high honor. They competed against major Division I schools like Texas A & M and the University of Florida.

But no one really knew that these 11 students are national champions. If a basketball or football team won the championship, the entire school would be celebrating.

It's great that our athletic teams are getting the chance to compete against some of the finest schools in the country. But students and faculty should remember that there are other SDSU teams competing at the D-I level and they are excelling. Agriculture and livestock is what this university knows and what it is about. Students and faculty should be very proud to be the best in those areas.

There are other campus organizations who are also winning D-I non-athletic awards. And these groups work just as hard, but don't receive the same type of attention. SDSU is more than just athletics.

Although we should be excited for D-I wins by the football and basketball teams, we should be extremely proud of our livestock eval team for winning a national championship.
