Identification
The Collegian will verify the authenticity of all letters before they are published. Letters must be signed and include the writer’s full name, address, telephone number, year in school, and major, title or occupation. Letters submitted by an organization must be signed by a representative of that organization. Anyone presenting a letter to the editor will be asked for identification. Content
The Collegian insists letters containing offensive language, libelous material or misleading information be rewritten before publication. The Collegian reserves the right to edit letters for spelling, clarity and grammar.
Personal attacks
If a letter attacks another specific individual, the Collegian will allow the person to read the letter before publication and respond to it in the same issue if that person desires. A personal attack is loosely defined as any statement damaging to a person’s or group’s general character, personality or reputation. Staff members and columnists personally attacked in a letter to the editor may not respond to the attack in their columns or with another letter to the editor.
Format
Letters must be typed and may not exceed 250 words, or they are subject to editing. Little preference is given to photocopied letters.
Priority
Because of space limitations, preference is given to letters from SDSU students, faculty and administration concerning campus and current issues.
