As the Common Read program moves into its third year, Outcasts United: A Refugee Team, An American Town by Warren St. John has been chosen as the book for Fall 2011.

Soccer Coach Luma Mufleh and her team of young refugees in a rural community are the inspiration for the 2011 SDSU Common Read and a variety of enrichment activities surrounding the book describing their experiences.

The Common Read is a program to enhance student learning and engagement through a common intellectual experience.

The common read program was instituted in Fall 2009 to increase diversity awareness at SDSU. According to Tim Nichols, dean of the Honors College and coordinator of the common read initiative, SDSU was not performing to the standards of the National Survey for Student Engagement — an organization that works towards things like exposure to diversity, providing enriching educational experiences and active and collaborative learning.

“We are thrilled that both the book’s author, New York Times Columnist Warren St. John, and its central figure, Coach Luma Mufleh, will be on campus this fall,” said Nichols, dean of the SDSU Honors College and coordinator of the common read initiative.

Outcasts United tells the inspiring story of the Fugees, a refugee soccer team in rural Georgia, who come together despite differences to overcome obstacles and find friendships, strength and success. “The lessons of the book are important for our students and our community,” Nichols said.

The common read initiative will include more than readings, quizzes and classroom lectures. “We have put together a compelling series of enriching educational experiences designed to actively engage students and community members in the themes of the book,” Nichols said. “We are particularly excited about possibilities for involvement with SDSU, Brookings and Sioux Falls soccer,” he said. “Sport brings people together, and soccer is truly a global game. As Coach Mufleh suggests, the Fugees are about changing the world, one game at a time.”

This fall’s common read activities begin with a “Kicking It” event at 7 p.m. Sept. 20, in Frost Arena featuring comments fromSDSU Women’s Soccer Coach Lang Wedemeyer and conversation about soccer and diversity.

At 7 p.m. Sept, 22, in Agriculture Engineering 100, Amy Zimbelman of Lutheran Social Services in Sioux Falls will present “Refugees in South Dakota: Who Are the New Faces?”

The South Dakota World Affairs Council will host the Consul General of Mexico Sept. 26 to talk about issues that include immigration and relations between Mexico and the U.S.
It will be Common Read Day at the SDSU Women’s Soccer team’s home game against Oral Roberts, starting at 6 p.m. Sept. 30, at the Fishback Soccer Park. The SDSU team will also host a soccer clinic at the fields for local youth on Oct. 16.

An award-winning documentary, God Grew Tired of Us, tells the harrowing story of three Sudanese “lost boys” and their journey to America, and it will be shown at 7 p.m. Oct. 3, in Alumni Auditorium at the South Dakota Art Museum.

A common read hunger banquet community night is scheduled at 7 p.m. Oct. 11, on campus in the Volstorff Ballroom at The Union. This annual event features a meal based on world food distribution along with a panel discussion about local service opportunities. Tickets are $2 each and are available throughSDSU’s Teaching and Learning Center.

The book’s author, St. John, will give an address at 7 p.m. Oct. 26 at the Performing Arts Center titled, “The Changing Face of America: Building Communities Through Diversity.”

Coach Luma Mufleh will cap the common read sequence of events when she delivers the Griffith Honors Forum Lecture in Frost Arena at 7 p.m. Nov. 9. Free tickets are required for admission and will be available on line in October.

This marks the third year of SDSU’s common reading program. Past books included Mountains Beyond Mountains in 2009 and Three Cups of Tea in 2010. As was the case in 2010, the city of Brookings will partner with SDSU in the common readprogram. Local benefactors will provide Brookings public school students with copies of Outcasts United or related age-appropriate material.

Rebounding from a 5-6 season won’t be easy, but SDSU has the tools to do it.

The 2010 version of the Jackrabbit football team fell short of expectations.

After qualifying for the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs in 2009, the Jacks had a No. 9 preseason ranking, lost each of their first four games and finished with their first losing season since 2001.

There may be even more questions entering the 2011 campaign than last year. SDSU has no choice but to refocus and try to return to the top of the Missouri Valley Football Conference.

The Jacks have trusted Thomas O’Brien as the starting quarterback for the last 17 games and he’ll enter fall camp as the number one choice. O’Brien was less than impressive at times last year, throwing 15 interceptions against his 10 touchdowns.”

“We have smart players, we have players who are committed and they’ve done the work, so they need to go out and perform,” SDSU head coach John Stiegelmeier said.

The turnovers hurt the Jackrabbits last year, as SDSU finished the year minus-five in the category after finishing plus-eight in that category in 2009. Winning the key category didn’t hurt the Jacks last year, as they went 4-1 when they had fewer turnovers than their opponent. Their only loss came at the hands of nationally-ranked Nebraska.

“We’re all accountable for our performance on the field and we know that taking care of the ball can win football games,” O’Brien said.

“Our emphasis has been great and defensively, we will be more aggressive. Our coaches have talked about takeaways and taking care of the football, and I would expect a positive turnover ratio,” Stiegelmeier said.

The Jackrabbits defense will be in charge of the takeaways and Stiegelmeier says he will expect an aggressive defense, led by the linebacking duo of Mike Lien and Dirk Kool.

“We have to get better at the next move on the chess board,” Stiegelmeier said about his defensive unit, when facing up-tempo offenses.

SDSU loses Walter Payton Award finalist Kyle Minett to graduation but will move former running back Tyrel Kool back into the backfield to lead the rushing attack. The Jackrabbits traditionally rely heavily on the running game and this season should be no different, with an experienced offensive line providing strength.

“That’s always been our plan and our vision. If the ‘fat guys’ get going and Tyrel runs well, he’ll have a great year,” Stiegelmeier said.

The Missouri Valley remains tough, but SDSU will be fortunate in having perennial powers Northern Iowa, North Dakota State Univesity and Southern Illinois visit Brookings in 2011.

“You always want to get better as a team and then you look at the other teams in the conference and everyone else is getting better. It’s a great level of football,” Stiegelmeier said.

The Jacks will open the season at home when they host former Great West ally Southern Utah on Sept. 3, before heading to Champaign, Ill., to meet Big Ten foe Illinois on Sept. 10.

“I think we have some guys who need to mature at certain positions because you can’t win in football unless you have 22 great guys, special teams and those guys behind them. I think we’ll have that,” Stiegelmeier said.

The Jacks have plenty of depth for an NCAA Tournament run in 2011.

Like the Tom Petty song says, “waiting is the hardest part” for the Jackrabbits soccer team.

After getting bounced from the Summit League Tournament on their home field for the second-straight year and with last season ending in the semifinals at the hands of rival North Dakota State, SDSU is preparing to get over the hump in 2011 with veteran leadership at each of the four regions of the field.

The 2010 season was bookended by home losses – a home loss to Drake opened the year and the season-ender to NDSU in the Summit League Tournament. In between, the Jacks were 11-1-5 and created an electric attack on the pitch. That attack was led by Summit League Offensive Player of the Year Danni Healy and Kaitlin Justice, both of whom have graduated.

SDSU scored three or more goals in six matches last year and went 6-0 in those scenarios.

“We’ve had players this spring who’ve demonstrated that we can be very lethal on the attack for us this fall,” said head soccer coach Lang Wedemeyer, the only head coach in program history.

The Jacks bring back a solid defensive line, led by Steph Peterson and Stéphanie Bérubé, and hope to repeat last year’s defensive effort. Emily Quigley and Courtney Higgins will round out the defense that led the Summit League in the goals against average, allowing just under one goal per game.

“We’ll be looking for some real consistency game in and game out because we had some tremendous defensive games last year, and we had some where we gave up multiple goals,” Wedemeyer said. “We want to shore up our defense with better coordination between those four players.”

The midfield will also be strong for the Jackrabbits, as Cori Bonte and Christa Nyblom figure to lead the squad’s core. SDSU will look to complete their middle as Darci Miller and Danielle Neuhalfen will battle for a starting spot.

“Cori (Bonte) is very tough and has taken to that role very well and Christa (Nyblom) is a creative midfielder and both will be able to lead us at the midfield position,” Wedemeyer said.

SDSU will leave the attacking responsibilities in the capable hands of Kayla Braffet, Kelsey Ferguson and Courtney Higgins. The trio combined for 26 points last season, with Ferguson doing most of her damage off the bench.

While Elisa Stamatakis was steadfast for the Jackrabbits in her freshman season, with 11 wins and eight shutouts, she was injured during the spring and was unable to train during the offseason. Wedemeyer expects her to be ready when the season begins Aug. 12 with an exhibition against Nebraska at Fishback Soccer Park.

“It was a bit unnerving but she had a great fall and we hope that she gets healthy and gets back on the field for us soon,” Wedemeyer said.

The season officially opens with a pair of College Cup qualifiers, first at home on Aug. 19 when SDSU hosts Creighton, before heading to Minnesota two days later on Aug. 21.

“We’re returning a lot of starters and we’ll have a lot of experience on the field for us,” Wedemeyer said. “We’ve got a good mix of young dynamic players and older experience, and we’ll lean on getting the right mix for strong results.”

Downtown contains not only the traditional student favorites of Nick’s Hamburgers, George’s Pizza and the Lantern Lounge, but also some surprising businesses that may go unnoticed by the average student.

Two of those businesses are: Trendz, a consignment clothing store focused on reusing fashionable clothing, and the Brookings Book Company (BBC), which is unique because it specializes in books that are rare or out of print.

Trendz started as a children’s recycled clothing store in 2005. Within in a few years, the store had moved, doubled in size and expanded to two locations, one for children and another for teens and adults. In 2009, the two locations merged into the store’s current location at 314 Main Ave. and now serves over 4000 clients.

Sara Roland, the owner and manager of Trendz, started the business for several reasons.

“I wanted to create a retail-like environment for recycling clothes,” Roland said. “I wanted people to come in here and be proud that they’re saving money and not feel like they have to settle for less.”

Trendz holds itself to a high standard of quality.

“Our policy has always been that we accept the best so that (our customers) can expect the best,” Roland said. “All of the items we sell here are hand selected by our staff and ultimately by me.”

Another feature of Trendz is it’s local artist boutique or LAB.

Sara Rowland, owner and manager of Trends, includes a consumer base of over 4,000 people, almost all local residents. - Collegian Photo by Nick Lowery

“It’s something I’m really passionate about,” Roland said. “There’s a lot of people I’ve met that are stay at home moms and they’re incredibly creative. So I thought ‘lets just have a place inside my store that offers a mini business for them.’ It gives people in our community a place to buy local hand made stuff.”

The Brookings Book Company has been around since 1998 and in downtown since 2004. There are nearly 40,000 titles in its inventory, ranging from the most popular paperback best sellers to foreign language books and antiques.

Richard Johnston, the store’s owner spoke about the store.

“We carry primarily used books, we have an extensive selection of comic books and graphic novels also. We try to carry books on all topics with a few exceptions like travel guides and computer manuals,” He said.

One thing that sets the BBC apart from similar businesses is its collection of comic books and graphic novels.

“We do a lot of comic book and graphic novel business with college students,” Johnston said. “We offer a subscription service; we pull the comic out so the customer can just come in to the store and pick it up.”

Joshua Bell, a former employee, current customer and friend of the store, said that the comics and graphic novels have a special place at the BBC.

“In the first week of every May they (the BBC) has a free comic book day,” he said. “This year there’s going to be people dressed up in costumes, and cake too.”

Downtown Brookings has a lot more to offer students than just night life. The stores and restaurants are all well worth a visit.

Hidden in the depths of The Union basement is an oasis of entertainment that provides many opportunities for bored Jackrabbits.

Outback Jacks is a service that’s all about fun. They offer a wide variety of indoor and outdoor activities to SDSU students, and at a low cost.

“Most of our events aren’t free, but they are like two or five dollars,” said Bonnie Moeller, student manager for Outback Jacks. “It’s a good alternative because when you come to the events you’re going to get instruction how to use the equipment.”

Moeller said they have a wide variety of events for students to choose from and they have an even wider variety of events planned for the 2011-2012 school year.

“We offer anything from cross-country skiing to fishing 101 and pool tournaments… we’re going to do a trap shooting tournament next year,” she said.

While Outback Jacks offers a lot of extracurricular events, they also help students plan and prepare for road trips and weekend vacations. They have hundreds of point-of-interest folders, chalked full of things to do in the Midwest and across the country.

Moeller compared the service to a small travel agency. She said that not many people use the resources they have for planning trips because it is relatively unknown.

Outback Jacks underwent a major face-lift during the 2010 summer; in fact, so did the entire basement. Before the transition, they still offered pool and some other indoor activities, but Outback Jacks was also lumped together with the campus print and design studio.

Since the beginning of the 2010- 2011 school year Outback Jacks separated from the print studio, which was renamed to Blueprint, and now solely focuses on games and campus events planning.

“Before, it (Outback Jacks) was kind of lacking and didn’t really have a lot to offer to the students,” said Tyler Bale, a student employee.

With the changes, Outback Jacks has more time to plan monthly events and also reap the benefits of having a full-time print lab right next door.

Moeller said that Outback Jacks has been working with Blueprint on designing ads and getting good deals on advertising and printing their event information. She thinks the partnership has helped gain student interest in Outback Jacks activities.

“I think the numbers have definitely increased a little bit,” Bale said. “It gets people down here to check out the remodel and see what’s going on.”

The staff are already planning some major events for the 2011- 2012 school year. Along with the trap-shooting contest which Moeller said is a good precursor to the opening Pheasant season for hunters, they also have plans for a volleyball tournament and a canoe/ adventure day at Camden State Park in southwest Minnesota.

“Each of our months are going to be themed for next fall,” Moeller said. “September will be heavily focused on outdoors. October we will start to move inside and November is ‘Wii-vember’ which includes different Wii activities.”

Whether you are a returning student or brand new to SDSU, you will likely find something interesting to do at Outback Jacks. If you would like to find more information about specific events or weekly specials just pick up a pamphlet in The Union basement at the front desk or ask a student employee.

Shopping, eating and dancing all have their place along Brookings Main Avenue.

From shopping to eating, downtown Brookings has everything a college student wants or needs.

Downtown Brookings is full of options for students. Main Avenue is lined with businesses perfectly suited to the student life style. The restaurants serve excellent food at a reasonable price and in many different styles. The stores sell everything from bicycles to books. For those who are of age, the local taverns provide an excellent location to relax and enjoy the company of friends.

Downtown Brookings was founded in October of 1879, when the railroad bypassed three existing communities and needed a new station. It wasn’t long before stores packed up and moved onto what is now Brookings’ Main Avenue.

Since then, downtown has grown and changed. There are now almost 200 businesses operating in the area.

Former SDSU presidents each have campus buildings named after them.

Wagner Hall, formerly known as the NFA, began its life as the Home Economics – Nursing Building, or HEN house. It was dubbed Wagner Hall in May 2010 to honor two alumni and former faculty members, Mary K. and Robert T. Wagner.

Robert Wagner served as a faculty member, famed among former students for his Marriage 250 class, before becoming the 17th president of SDSU.

“When my father became president in 1985, there was a lot of controversy,” said Chris Wagner, son of Mary and Robert Wagner, living in Geneva, Switzerland. “My father never let [the controversy] bother him.”

According to the April 10, 1985 issue of The Collegian, the controversy centered on Ray Hoops, first choice replacement of President Sherwood Berg, sudden resignation and 7-2 Board of Regents vote to approve hiring Robert Wagner, the second choice candidate during the search and screening less than a year earlier.

Chris also remembered having friends ask if the stories his father told in the marriage class were true and answering that for the most part they were. Though he admitted his father believed “if the stories were worth telling, they were worth embellishing.”

“My father was a competitive person,” said Chris. “He enjoyed games, like Monopoly and cribbage, and most often he won.”

Mary Wagner served on the Brookings Board of Education before being elected to the South Dakota Legislature. She also taught sociology at SDSU.

“[My mother] was a pioneer of the legislature among the first group of women to be elected in 1980,” Chris said. “There she focused a lot on gender roles.”

Chris also described her classes as being gender role oriented, especially the evolution of those roles in society, the workplace and leadership.

Both Wagners were SDSU alumni, with Robert earning his Ph.D. in sociology from SDSU in 1972 and Mary earning a master’s degree in social sciences in 1974 and a Ph.D. in sociology in 1978.

“My parents both loved the Jackrabbits,” said Chris. “I think in heaven they beat Nebraska.”

The family moved to Brookings from Watertown with the intent of Robert completing his Ph.D. and eventually teaching theology in a seminary. After completing the program, Robert was offered a job in the sociology department.

“In 1971, my parents decided to move to Brookings,” Chris said. “I was skeptical about leaving the high school I knew, but found the community so engaging and so warm that we never looked back.”

Mary Wagner died in 2004 and Robert died in January 2011.

Welcome to South Dakota’s flagship university, South Dakota State University! The time you spend at SDSU will go by fast. Of course your time here will not go by as fast as mine.

When I came to SDSU one year ago, I came with a mission. I began my education in South Dakota by taking courses at University Center in Sioux Falls. When I came to Brookings to finish my degree, I realized that taking classes in Sioux Falls had hindered my having a true college experience. So with this realization in hand, I approached The Collegian and proposed a column in which I would write about my attempt to squeeze four years of SDSU experiences in two semesters.

Some of my favorite experiences of the past year include Hobo Day activities, eating at Nick’s Hamburgers, enjoying SDSU ice cream in the newly renovated dairy bar, and taking in my first ever basketball game (I don’t mean my first SDSU or collegiate basketball game. It truly was my first basketball game ever).

Hobo Day is one of SDSU’s biggest events. The past Hobo Day found me dressed as an actual hobo and shaking my bean can for extra money. I made $9 that night. I like to think that I was the inspiration for John Stossel’s recent Freeloaders special on Fox News. There is no way to know for sure, but I did see a conspicuously mustached man following me around all night.

Dining on campus can be an experience and I will leave it at that. Campus does have some gems though. If it’s ice cream you crave then the SDSU dairy bar is your place. The SDSU dairy bar is where cookies and cream ice cream was invented. It’s pretty much the Taj Mahal of ice cream joints.

If dining on campus doesn’t suit you then venture into downtown Brookings. There you will find a plethora of pizza places. Among the pizza places, there is a great little burger joint called Nick’s Hamburgers. Although I generally defer judgment to the Food Network when it comes to naming the best hamburgers in America, I really think they missed the mark on this one. Has anyone even heard of Hemmer Brothers?

Some of the activities that every SDSU student should partake in during their time at SDSU include.

Climb the campanile

Tailgate at a football game

Partake in Hobo Day activities

Go someplace for spring break

Join a student activity

Enjoy some fine SDSU ice cream

Make a new friend

Tell your D2L discussion board that you’re not here to make friends

Visit a professor in his or her office

Graduate

SDSU has many activities to keep students entertained and occupied. Take advantage of them. Most of all enjoy your time here in Brookings, it goes by fast.

Veterans will receive help merging back into society and the collegiate system.

Students in the armed forces will have the opportunity this year to experience SDSU in a different way.

An orientation session for student veterans will be held at 2-5 p.m. on Aug. 29 in room 169 of The Union.

“Anyone in the armed forces who (has) served or is serving in the military can come to the orientation,” said Andrew Ellis, faculty adviser for the SDSU Armed Forces Association.

Ellis said there will be an orientation session at the beginning of every semester.

Ellis said the session will be, “above and beyond what SDSU puts on,” because it will be more structured than the normal new student orientation session. The orientation will involve showing the students where their classes and services are, including Wintrode, health services, counseling services, dining facilities and UPD.

The session will have case managers from the Veterans Administration for veterans of Operation Iraqi Freedom/Operation Enduring Freedom. Also, representatives from the Veteran’s Center in Sioux Falls, the Brookings County Veteran’s Service Office and the SDSU Veteran’s Office will present information.

Derek Douglas, former president of the SDSU Armed Forces Association, said the new student orientation is geared toward traditional students rather than students in the Armed Forces.

“This session will present more useful information to former active duty, National Guard and Reserve,” he said. “It will show them what services are available on campus and there will be more awareness of what is available on campus, locally and nationally.”

After talking to veterans, Ellis said they found they are having a hard time finding a group to fit in with because many are non-traditional students with a military background.

“The military trains you for six months to be a solider and one week to be a civilian again,” he said. “We’re trying to ease them into the collegiate system.”

Douglas said the session will help ease the transition into college from the military, especially for those who served on active duty.

“You get your paperwork and [the military] sends you packing, there is no follow-up,” Douglas said. “I think the session shows the veteran population that the university does care about this group of students and creates a more welcoming experience.”

Nathan McMurphy, a senior geographic information system and geography major, said an orientation session like this one would have benefited him.

“It would have helped me out a ton,” McMurphy said. “I went to the orientation day at The Union during the summer and we weren’t taken around campus or shown where any of the services were.”

McMurphy said he hopes this session will be useful for incoming freshmen who are veterans.

“It will set an example for incoming freshmen … [who] will say ‘oh, they are taking the time to help us’ and they will hopefully pass that down,” McMurphy said.

McMurphy is volunteering to help with the orientation session.

“It’s going to be fun walking around campus,” McMurphy said. “There are still places on campus that I don’t know.”

SDSU is not the first school to have a veteran’s orientation. Black Hills State University and the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology also have similar orientation programs.

The SDSU Armed Forces Association was formally known as SDSU Veterans Club.
