After close to half a century, an engineering professor at SDSU is retiring.

Arden Sigl began teaching at SDSU in 1968 and now, 41 years later, is coming to the end of his final semester as a full time professor. Sigl will return in the fall to teach one graduate level course.

“Not many [professors] would pre-date 1968,” said Sigl.

During his time here, he has seen a lot of change.

Hilton Briggs was the president when Sigl began his career here. Experiencing the administrations of six different university presidents were only some of the changes Sigl saw during his career at SDSU.

One of the biggest changes during his time was the computer.

“When I started out, a memo came out ? and carbon copies were used, so that’s a tremendous change,” said Sigl.

“Work on [computers] is both a benefit and a curse,” Sigl said.

Sigl was a part of the university committee commissioned by the president.

The commission was made up of 10 people and released a report in 1985, said Sigl.

“The president commissioned a committee on how to bring computers to where they are today for faculty,” said Sigl.

Sigl said when he started in engineering, he used a slide rule.

“Now, most people don’t know what it is,” he said.

“I like analysis,” said Sigl. “Now, [because of computers], we can analyze things way beyond what we can understand.”

“I try to instill in students a healthy dose of skepticism,” Sigl said. He tells his students that just because data comes out of a computer does not mean it is correct.

Other changes Sigl has experienced are growth and added buildings on campus, as well as the transition to D-I sports.

“I like SDSU sports. My wife and I have had season tickets for a long time for basketball and football,” said Sigl.

Sigl’s favorite part of working at SDSU is the interaction he has had with students.

“I’ve been at this a long time,” Sigl said. “That’s what I’m going to miss. Associating with younger people keeps you young.”

“I enjoyed interacting with students and grad students,” he said.

Sigl has a dry erase board in his office that he uses to help students understand concepts and enjoys watching students learn.

Brent Krohn, a senior civil engineering major, said he has taken almost every class Sigl offers.

“[Sigl] probably just drives the seriousness of matter into our heads. He doesn’t let you get by without learning,” said Krohn.

Doug Wessel, a project manager at Banner Associates, an engineering and architectural consulting firm, was a graduate student advisee of Sigl’s.

“Dr. Sigl’s influence during my undergrad and graduate education was a profound force shaping my understanding of the engineering field and helped set in motion the path to my professional development.”

Sigl said he has graded an inestimable number of papers during his time here.

“That is always the tough, tedious part,” said Sigl. “But I always spend time trying to write notes on students’ papers.”

Sigl will return in the fall to teach one last graduate-level steel design class.

“It will be a slowdown,” he said.

Sigl and his wife, Lavonne, are expecting their first grandchild in May.

“I also am looking forward to enjoying the outdoors,” said Sigl.

“I’ve missed a lot of fishing trips over the years,” he said. “You can’t make them up, but you don’t have to miss any more.”

He is also planning to go backpacking in the southwestern United States.

“The landscapes are beautiful there,” said Sigl. “Maybe it’s just because I’ve grown up in South Dakota.”

He plans to continue working on his photography hobby and also will keep doing some engineering consulting work as well.

“I plan to maintain my license to practice,” he said. “Someday, I’ll have to retire from that.”

Sigl also said his wife has made him a list of things to do.

“Lavonne has a list that might take me three years to get through,” he said.

Taking a trip the week before finals may sound like a crazy idea to some; however, three SDSU students are headed to Washington, D.C., on April 24.

These students are attending the Mobilization to End Poverty, an event to raise awareness about poverty and to promote its end.

“It’s going to be 5,000 to 10,000 people coming together,” said Ben Johnson, a sophomore broadcast journalism major. “There will be keynote speakers, and it will be a way to get tools to help our communities and raise awareness on a national level.”

The mobilization is being put on by Sojourners, a Christian group whose mission is to “articulate the biblical call to social justice,” according to their Web site, www.sojo.net.

Their goals, as listed on their Web site, include reducing the number of Americans living in poverty by half in the next 10 years and to provide leadership to help achieve international goals for reducing extreme global poverty.

The event begins on April 26 and lasts until April 29 and will include keynote addresses, workshops, training, networking, worship and Capitol Hill day, a time for participants to meet with their elected officials.

Some topics for the workshops in relation to poverty include the economy, women, health care, the environment, peace and immigration.

President Barack Obama has been invited to give a major address on poverty during this gathering.

Sarah Johnson, a freshman studying sociology, is excited to go on the trip.

“I think it will be really interesting to see so many people bring attention to poverty ? and to maybe see Barack Obama speak,” she said.

It is unknown whether or not the president will speak at the gathering.

“I guess it will be a surprise when we get there,” said Ben Johnson.

Some of the scheduled speakers include Rep. Rosa DeLauro; Rep. John Lewis; Bishop Vashti Murphy McKenzie of the African Methodist Episcopal Church; David Lane, CEO and president of ONE; Elen Nissenbaum from the center on Budget and Policy Priorities; Rev. Sharon Watkins, the general minister and president of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and Travis Smiley of The Travis Smiley Show.

The students are missing most of the week before finals, said Sarah Johnson, but they have university-excused absences.

“I’m missing a test, so it is nice to be able to make it up,” she said.

“I am looking forward to seeing something outside the Midwest,” said Ben Johnson, “and to kind of get a new look at a new way of life.

“To sort of see that many people come together gives you a little more faith in humanity,” he said.

The group is part of the United Faith Campus Ministry and has been fundraising for two months to help pay for their expenses.

According to Ben Johnson, they sold coffee and butter braids, had a pancake feed and did a Pizza Ranch fundraiser.

The students only have to pay $140 out of pocket for their registration plus two meals a day.

The students will also have some opportunities to go sightseeing while in Washington, D.C.

“We are going to the Holocaust Museum the first day and kind of doing the touristy things in the beginning,” said Sarah Johnson.

They will also be heading to the Washington Monument and a few other places.

Attending the Mobilization is something to look forward to, said Ben Johnson.

“I am just excited.”

Seven shows in five days.

Members from the <del>Alpha Phi Omega</del> Alpha Psi Omega* fraternity spent part of spring break experiencing New York City. Musicals, visits with actors and former students and city life rounded out the trip.

“The whole point of the trip is to expose the kids to acting and New York City,” said Billy Wilburn, an assistant professor in the Communication Studies and Theatre Department and an adviser to APO at SDSU.

Every other year, APO takes students who are involved with the fraternity to NYC to see Broadway shows, meet with friends, actors and tour places like the Radio City Music Hall and the United Nations, said Wilburn.

This year, 23 students went on the trip.

“We have been doing this for at least 20 years, but probably closer to 30,” Wilburn said.

As a group, they attended three shows: Billy Elliot, In The Heights and Heroes, as well as a preview of Hair.

“My favorite part was probably just the amount of theatre seen in such a short amount of time. I went to seven shows on a five day trip,” said Heather Slunecka, a junior communication studies and theatre major.

“Hair was the most educational part,” said Slunecka. She said they had the opportunity to go on stage and talk with the actors because it was a preview.

“Hair was my favorite,” said Rachel Foth.

Foth graduated in December but is still involved with APO and Capers.

“It was a new and different type of show,” she said. “It is from the ’60s, you really don’t see musicals like that anymore. It was nice to bring it back.”

The group was also able to go backstage at the Radio City Music Hall and meet a Rockette, Wilburn said.

“We saw behind the stage and got to see how it moves,” said Wilburn.

The reason for the trip is to expose the students to New York City, introduce them to former students who are now living there and to see what it is like to be an actor and live in New York City.

“We do the same things that they do, but it’s just really far away,” said Wilburn.

Fundraising paid for most of the trip.

APO hosts events such as Capers and dances, said Wilburn.

They are hosting a St. Patrick’s Day dance March 19 at the Performing Arts Center at 7 p.m.

“We do lots of things to raise money,” said Wilburn.

After a full year of performance, students felt the trip was well deserved.

“It was a nice thank you for all the work we put in during the last year,” said Slunecka. “Our department did a lot for us, it was a great trip to experience.”

“It is wonderful that they [APO] do it at an affordable price for the students,” said Foth.

“Students are eligible for the trip by being a member of APO,” said Wilburn.

Membership is based on the amount of commitment and involvement and a high grade point average, he said.

South Dakota will receive $104 million dedicated to education, while SDSU is likely to be impacted through research dollars available in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

On Feb. 17, President Barack Obama signed the act into law. According to www.recovery.gov, a Web site set up by the White House, the $787 billion act is meant to stimulate the economy through providing money for energy, health care, infrastructure building, education, tax relief and state and local funding.

The ARRA provides $144 billion for states to help them balance their budgets without cutting key programs, especially in education and health. South Dakota is receiving more than $127 million for this purpose.

That money will be divided up into $104 million in an education block grant and $23 million in the form a flexible block grant.

“(The education block grant) will provide funding for K-12 and higher education,” said Kevin Kephart, vice president for research and dean of the graduate school.

According to Kephart, the amount a state receives for education is based on a formula taking the general population of the state into account, as well as the population of people from the ages of 5-24.

North Dakota is receiving $85 million for education and $105 million overall. Minnesota will get $667 million for education and $821 million overall.

Funding will probably come to SDSU in the form of research grants from agencies such as the Department of Energy.

“Many of the faculty will apply for research grants,” said Kephart.

While funds have been set aside at the national level for each state in certain categories, they need to be divided up and handed out by the state governments.

The stimulus funding for education is coming through the state government, said Bob Otterson, executive assistant to the president.

It is now up to the state legislators to divide up the funds based on the guidelines in the ARRA.

Otterson said the university has put forth ideas for some projects and is waiting to see what will happen.

One way the stimulus bill proposes to aid college students is by providing for an increase in available college tax credits across the nation.

According to data from the office of Speaker Nancy Pelosi, South Dakota should have 7,000 additional students receiving college tax credit to help reduce education costs.

North Dakota will have 6,000 additional recipients and Minnesota will have 41,000.

Another part of the ARRA is to help stimulate the economy through creation of new jobs and saving existing employment opportunities.

South Dakota, which had an unemployment rate of 3.9 percent in December of 2008, will have 10,000 jobs created or saved by the Act.

North Dakota, with a December unemployment rate of 3.5 percent, will have 8,000 jobs saved or created, and Minnesota, with an unemployment rate of 6.9 percent, will have 66,000 jobs created or saved.

According to information from the Senate Appropriations Committee, South Dakota will receive nearly $1.2 billion, including $183 million for highway funding and $3 million for education technology.

The SDSU pharmaceutical sciences department is doing research on skin and colon cancer, as well as improving cancer treatment.

“We have a cohesive, energetic group of faculty members,” said Chandradhar Dwivedi, the head of the Pharmaceutical Sciences Department. “I believe we are headed in the right direction to have an impact.”

Dwivedi said the research team is focusing on skin and colon cancer because both are high in the state.

The department is researching the effects of different molecules on skin cancer development. Dwivedi said there are a number of molecules from natural oils and plants that have been responding well in tests on mice.

Dwivedi is doing work with flax, a plant grown in North and South Dakota. Its oil and meal have been found to be high in Omega-3 fatty acids.

In Dwivedi’s research, some mice were given a flax-enriched diet and others had just a regular diet. Those with the flax had few colon tumors.

Other professors are working to reverse chemotherapy resistance.

“Cancer cells do not always respond to chemotherapy,” said Dwivedi. “They are working to reverse the drug resistance.”

Researchers take the cancer cells, put them in contact with the drugs and expose them to chemotherapy, Dwivedi said.

There is also research to help reduce the side effects of treatment.

“Treatment with chemotherapy causes harm to other cells,” said Dwivedi.

Targeting only the cancer cells will help lower toxic effects on the rest of the body, hopefully reducing things like hair loss and other effects associated with chemotherapy.

The funding for SDSU’s pharmaceutical research comes from a variety of places such as the National Institute of Health, the Canola Council, the Department of Defense and the Skin Cancer Foundation of America. Currently, the research team receives $1 million.

The food science lab’s technology-enhanced renovation will start later this semester.

This lab is located on the fourth floor of the NFA building and is used mainly by students majoring in nutrition, food science and hospitality.

“It needs to be done,” said Tracey Kruger, a senior food and nutrition science major who is specializing in dietetics. “The old lab is outdated; my kitchen at home is nicer.”

Mary Gengler, a senior microbiologist who teaches food principles classes and food, people and the environment, agreed.

“It is long overdue,” she said. “The lab has all of the original stuff from when the building was built. One stove is hard to use because the numbers on the dial are worn off. The appliances are aging and don’t work as well as they could.”

Included in the lab’s makeover are new appliances, a new design, more up-to-date colors, curtains to separate the food preparation areas from the fine dining area and updated technology.

“[The current lab] doesn’t have the technology we need,” said Kruger.

The remodeled lab will have a projector and Internet capabilities, according to Gengler and Padmanaban Krishnan, a professor in the department and one of the people involved in beginning this project.

“The lab will have electronic capability to reach across the state to meet educational needs away from campus,” Krishnan said.

“Students are getting the most modern things everywhere else, so they should get them here, too. They are investing by paying their tuition to get the best education, and we push them so they can do their best when they get out of school,” he added.

The remodeling project began two years ago. Krishnan, who was the acting department head at the time, brought the faculty together to find out what they wanted to see in a new lab and what needed to be done for the students.

The project should cost around $500,000 to complete, and all the funding is coming from private sources, said Krishnan.

“Everyone agrees we need to look at student and department needs for the future,” he said. “We are growing and busting at the seams; we can’t just have the lab work for one class.”

Some of the discussion points when planning the new lab centered around energy efficiency and use of space.

“We had to ask, ‘Do we really need a refrigerator for each kitchen?’” Krishnan said.

“We wanted to straighten out the kitchen units, make them more ergonomic, while providing a larger central space for fine dining,” he said. “We had to ask, ‘what will the kitchen of the future look like?’”

“We want to update appliances and décor to make it a modern and up-to-date environment for our students,” Gengler added.

Work on the lab will begin at the end of the semester and continue through the summer. The renovation should be complete for classes in the fall.

“It will give us a chance to do more advanced things in a new environment that is more updated,” said Kruger.

“I am very excited and thrilled,” said Gengler. “This is a tremendous opportunity for the students.”

Brazil and South Dakota have more in common than one might think. For example, Brazil is a big producer of soybeans and meat products, as well as ethanol.

A symposium called Brazil: A Rising Power in the New Global Order will cover some of these issues and many more.

The symposium takes place Jan. 30 from 1 to 5 p.m. in the Volstorff Ballroom, with a reception at the South Dakota Agricultural Heritage Museum beginning at 5:30 p.m.

The program is being brought in by the South Dakota World Affairs Council and will cover topics such as Brazil’s increasing role in the global community, ecosystems in Brazil, agricultural production and trade, energy production, race relations in the rainforest and land use in Brazil.

The symposium is free, and the reception costs $15, as there will be hors d’oeuvres and beverages served. The reception will also include a short presentation on Brazilian music.

“There should be something compelling in each segment,” said Harriet Swedlund, the executive director of the South Dakota World Affairs Council.

Swedlund said she hopes the symposium will attract students and faculty from a wide variety of areas.

“When you get a diverse set of people together, most people don’t know each other. This is a chance to learn from each other, a networking opportunity,” she said.

According to Swedlund, the Stanley Foundation initiated the plan behind the symposium.

This foundation, which is based in Muscatine, Iowa, strives to promote public understanding, dialogue and cooperative action on critical international issues, according to their Web site, www.stanleyfoundation.org.

For the symposium, the World Affairs Council researched and gathered information on nine countries that are rising in the world. These countries include China, India, Japan, Russia, South Africa, Turkey and South Korea.

Out of these nine countries, the council chose Brazil.

“The fundamental reason for choosing Brazil is there are so many close linkages,” said Swedlund.

Brazil is a leading producer of soybeans, meat products and cotton and actively participates in the ethanol industry. There are U.S. ties through land investment and situations of displaced indigenous people. Brazil is also the only country in the western hemisphere on the list.

Swedlund said the program information level is one to interest the wider public.

“We have a wide variety of material to try to entice a broad audience,” said Swedlund.

“We hope the faculty sees this as a chance for students to get one big picture of part of the world whose presence makes an impact,” she said.

As for convenience, the program and sessions are arranged in a way that people can come and go between classes as needed.

“If people can’t stay, they can come for parts,” said Swedlund. “They’ll pick up something and hear something from each speaker.”

A former SDSU baseball player was honored at the Rose Parade in Pasadena, Calif., this January.

Kim Morsching, the mother of former SDSU pitcher and Rapid City native Kevin Morsching, rode on the Donate Life float in the Rose Parade. Kevin’s brother Kirby Morsching, who is an SDSU senior and a pitcher on the baseball team, helped assemble the float for the Rose Parade.

Kevin died on Aug. 27, 2007, from brain injuries caused by a skateboarding accident. The 21-year-old biology major was a pitcher for the Jackrabbit baseball team.

“He successfully gave six organs,” said Kim, who rode through the parade route holding a picture of her son. Kevin donated his heart, lungs, kidneys, liver and pancreas, saving six people.

He also made 160 tissue donations, 55 of which have been placed, said Kim.

“Because of his physical condition and his injuries, he was able to give more than most people,” she said.

“It’s pretty amazing how many people he helped,” said Kirby.

The Morschings have met four of the recipients of Kevin’s organs and exchanged letters with all six of them.

“Kevin was always giving. ? He liked to do things personally to help someone. He was always doing things like shoveling walks in the neighborhood,” she said. “Donation spoke to him. He felt it wasn’t necessary to take all of that with him; it was his nature.”

“Our parents told us to do it, so when we pass away we could help others,” Kirby said.

The theme for this year’s Donate Life float was “Stars of Life.” According to the Donate Life float Web site, anyone can be a star through organ, eye and tissue donation.

The Donate Life float won the Queen’s Award, said Kirby. The award is given out for the best use of roses or flowers, he said.

The float was meant to honor the people who make organ donation possible: donors, their families, transplant patients and healthcare professionals.

“(The parade) was an eye-opening and heart-healing experience,” said Kim. “It was wonderful.”

The float had 26 riders who were either organ recipients or family members of organ donors. The float is sponsored by organ and tissue organizations around the United States. There were also 38 memorial floragraphs to honor people who donated their organs. For more information about the float and those honored on this year’s Donate Life float, visit www.donatelifefloat.org.

“It was an amazing experience,” Kim said. “I met other donor families and recipients and others involved in organ donation organizations.”

“I truly believe organ donation has helped our family out,” said Kirby. “I just want to say thank you to everyone for their support last year.”

Kim was sponsored by the Musculoskeletal Transplant Foundation, a non-profit group that helps provide tissue and support for donors, recipients and their families.

According to Donate Life, 94,000 people in the United States are waiting for organ transplants, and more than 2,500 of those individuals live in the upper Midwest.

Kim asks that others consider becoming organ donors.

“If you knew Kevin, do it as a way to remember him or as something to do out of the goodness of your heart,” she said. “We hope you never have to donate, but it is a huge gift.”

Kim also stressed the importance of discussing organ donation with family and friends so it will go easier if the time ever comes.

“It is truly an act of the heart.”

From winning the dairy products judging national competition to receiving scholarships, the SDSU dairy department is full of achievements.

It was quite a season for SDSU’s Dairy Products Judging Team. They placed second in the regional contest on Oct. 11 and then placed first at the national competition in Newark, Ohio, on Oct. 22.

“Each year, three undergraduate students and one graduate student compete in the contest,” said Robert Baer, who has been coaching SDSU’s dairy products judging team for 21 years. Baer is a professor in the Dairy Science Department.

This year’s team included Abbie Wirt, a senior dairy production and biology major; Tricia Schuller, a senior; Jessica Berg, a junior dairy science and business management and marketing major; and Vandana Panchal, a graduate student.

Each member of the team evaluated eight samples of six products. The products judged were: two percent milk, butter, cheddar cheese, cottage cheese, vanilla ice cream and Swiss style strawberry yogurt.

“Student results are compared to official scores and then rankings are determined in the contest,” said Baer. The contest takes about five hours to complete, Baer said.

Wirt placed first overall, Schuller placed second overall, Berg was eighth overall and Panchal placed first overall in the graduate contest.

There were 58 contestants from 15 universities across the United States and Canada in the competition.

“We do various samples to calibrate our taste buds with the national judges,” said Wirt.

“Students prepare for the contest by evaluating the six different dairy products for attributes and defects,” said Baer. “We look at flavor, body and texture and appearance and color with the products. We practice, practice and then do more practice to get competitive.”

To join the team, students need to enroll in the dairy products judging class, DS202, which is open to all majors and offered every spring, according to Baer. The students with the highest scores in DS202 are invited to enroll in 401 in the fall.

Each team member trains for one semester for two years, spending one hour five days a week testing eight samples each session, said Wirt.

“A lot of teams don’t have years of experience. (Baer) has been coaching us for two years. ? We knew exactly what to expect,” said Wirt.

Baer also received an award at the national competition. He was named Coach of the Year for the seventh time.

“He is absolutely wonderful,” said Wirt. “I would have been scared out of my pants to be on another team.

“When I asked him how he got to be so good, he said he learned so much because he was the first to be there and the last to leave competitions for five to 10 years,” said Wirt. “He said he talked with other coaches to calibrate his knowledge.”

Wirt said the award generally goes to the coach of the winning team.

Each year, the team competes in two contests. The first is the Midwest Dairy Products Judging Contest, which is always held in Glenview, Ill., at Kraft Foods. The national contest is held in various locations throughout the United States and Canada, said Baer. Previous locations include New Orleans, San Francisco, Chicago, Dallas, Montreal and Pheonix.

“Dairy products judging is a class that has hands-on learning. You have to put the products in your mouth to taste them,” said Wirt. “It also teaches you to listen and critically evaluate.”

Flowers and trees and shrubs, oh my!

Classes such as greenhouse and nursery crops, fruit and vegetable production, arboriculture, planting design and specifications, park interpretation and recreation and outdoor programming are required for different degrees within SDSU’s Horticulture, Forestry, Landscape and Parks Department (HFLP).

Megan Chilson, a senior horticulture major said she knows more than 200 plants and their scientific names due to the herbaceous plants class.

Jen Sperling, a senior horticulture major said the identification classes are her favorite. “I like being able to, when walking or running outside, name the plants.”

The three degrees available through the HFLP Department are horticulture, landscape architecture and park and recreation management.

According to their Web site, “Currently, the department has approximately 200 students.”

“The small size is comfortable, which is probably the reason a lot of students come from Minnesota and Iowa,” said Pete Schaefer. He has been part of the department for 25 years, serving as its head for 12, and is now a professor.

“It’s a lot of hands on activities and is really practical,” said Janelle Burkard, a senior horticulture major. Greenhouse management was her favorite class because of the way it was set up. “In a way, it was like managing my own business,” said Burkard.

“You get to have a lot of hands-on classes and get your hands dirty,” said Chilson.

In the past, park and recreation management students worked with the Rosebud Indian Reservation to help set up recreation programs, and landscape students work with private homeowners and public areas for different clients through some of their classes, said Schaefer.

The HFLP Department also operates McCrory Gardens. The gardens primarily depend on private funding and donations, but the department runs it, said Schaefer.

The gardens were started in the early 1960s and are located at the intersection of 6th Street and 22nd Avenue.

“The gardens contain approximately 20 acres of formal display gardens and about 45 acres of arboretum,” according to their Web site.

The gardens are used for research of woody plants, turfgrass and the effectiveness of native plant horticulture in the northern Great Plains, said the Web site.

“We employ 50 or so students in summer, mostly college, but there are some high school.” These students are not all necessarily studying horticulture; they come from a variety of majors, and other classes use the gardens as well according to Schaefer.

One of the unique features of SDSU’s park and recreation and landscape architecture students is their strong background in plants. “You won’t typically find that in landscape architecture or parks programs in most places,” said Schaefer.

The HFLP Department here is different than at many places because it encompasses a wide variety of studies within its three degree programs.

“Just the combination of majors in the department is fairly unique. It provides a different mix for students than most places,” Schaefer said.

Aside from its variety of classes and major offerings, there are also a number of student organizations within the department. These include the Horticulture Club, flower judging team, the student chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects and Park Management Club.
