High expectations and stress keep Steve Erpenbach busy.

Erpenbach served as former U.S. Senator Tom Daschle’s state director for eight years before spending three years in Washington as his political director. He now works as vice president of development at the SDSU Foundation.

Although there are many differences between his past and present positions, the adrenaline is still there. During the campaign, he worked with a win/lose drive and at the foundation he raises funds for the Jackrabbit Guarantee. Both jobs have a different kind of stress, but Erpenbach said he loves them both.

“I’ve loved each one of them,” said Erpenbach.

Although Daschle’s loss of one of South Dakota’s senate seats pushed Erpenbach towards SDSU, it was something he had been looking to do for a while.

Erpenbach was a student at SDSU from 1980-1983. He graduated with a journalism degree and went on to work in Sheldon, Iowa and in Sioux Falls at the Argus Leader. He worked for the Collegian while attending SDSU, as sports editor and editor. His future wife was his managing editor at the Collegian.

He got into politics in 1990 when a friend campaigned for a seat in the U.S. Senate. Erpenbach eventually teamed up with Daschle and worked on his team for eight years. When Daschle lost last year, Erpenbach said he was glad for the career change and happy to return to SDSU.

“Win or lose I would have ended up here,” said Erpenbach.

He’s always tried to maintain ties with SDSU, but found it difficult to make it back for a game or a recital while working in politics. Now he has time to reflect on his great SDSU memories, as well as create new ones.

He is glad to be able to help the school.

Jerry N. Uelsmann photos may spark the imagination, but that isn’t always beautiful.

The South Dakota Art Museum is showing selected photographs of Uelsmann until March 13.

His prints give off a dream-like surrealism that makes the viewer feel like they are traveling down a mythical path. He takes an image and adds what his imagination sees. There is much emphasis on a singular person standing alone in an unknown exotic region.

While his prints are interesting to look at, they lack the beauty that simplicity brings. There is so much going on in some of his prints that his ideas are lost. The emotion which photography is supposed to inflict on a person is lacking in Uelsmann’s work. His work is trying too hard to represent an idea or a state of mind. Some of his prints would be so beautiful if only he had left them as they originally were.

There is beauty in truth, but truth escapes Uelsmann’s prints. His prints are the kind that would make the most sense when viewed in an altered state of mind. They do not capture the things most photographs do, but instead they capture what is inside one man’s head. Uelsmann has a unique blend of real life, and an imaginary one, but sometimes they is too paradoxical.

Uelsmann, who was born in 1934, received his bachelor of fine arts degree in 1957 from the Institute of Technology. He went on to receive his masters and masters of fine arts from India University in 1960. He taught photography for many years, but recently retired. He has many permanent displays in museums across the globe, including the National Museum of Modern Art in Kyoto, the National Gallery of Australia, and the Chicago Art Institute.

The Jackrabbits’ match against Dordt College carried on a tradition of roughness Dec. 3 and 4 with 48 total penalties for the two home games.

Games against Dordt have always been rough and full of arguments and fights, said SDSU head coach Marty Schipull.

“The two teams literally don’t like each other,” Schipull said.

When two teams don’t like each other, they show it. Fans were standing on their seats trying to get a good look at the numerous fights on the ice. Roughing, tripping and misconduct were just a few of the penalties that sent players to the penalty box. Schipull said too many penalties can really disrupt a game. He thinks that’s what happened against Dordt. When members of both teams are sitting in the box, and teams aren’t playing full strength, that’s when the majority of goals are made.

Schipull has high hopes for the team and plans to work on conditioning and “stop and starts.” He says that in theory SDSU has the better team, but Dordt won all the “races.”

The Jacks took just as many shots as Dordt Friday with 26, but fell behind Saturday when they took only 24 shots, while Dordt took 41. Friday’s game finished with the Jacks scoring 3 goals and Dordt holding 4. Saturday went much the same way. Dordt won again with a score of 6 to 4.

Schipull said that the team was really disappointed because most, if not all, have beat Dordt in the past. The scores have always been close between the two teams historically, and this loss was a sting for the Jacks. With 10 games down, and 20 left to go in the season the team remains optimistic.

“We’ve got improving to do, defending our league title is not out of reach by any means” Schipull said.

He said he thinks the games against North Dakota State and Mankato are going to be the hardest, but hopes to win at least half. SDSU plays the University of Minnesota- Duluth Dec. 10 and 11 at 8 and 7 p.m. at the Larson Ice Arena. Schipull hopes for fewer penalties. He wants to get the team better prepared and work on their faults.

“They have to do better” Schipull said.

He thinks they will, because the team really wants to finish well this season. He said the team needs to play smarter, and not spend so much time cooped up in a penalty box.

A melancholy mood settles in as the lyrics sway into the music and back out into the heart leaving a black blanket of depression.

Listening to Modest Mouse’s new CD, Good News For People Who Love Bad News, tends to leave the listener in a lonely location within the recesses of the mind. Issac Brock, Eric Judy, Dann Gallucci and Benjamin Weikel make up the Seattle-based band. They’ve been around for quite a while, and have a few CDs besides Good News.

Interestingly the second song, “Float On,” is the only optimistic song on the CD and the one that gets the most radio play. So if people hear this song on the radio and like happy music they might not want to buy Good News, because the rest of the CD isn’t as peppy.

“Bury Me With It” just might be the most depressing Modest Mouse song to date. Brock sounds like he’s crying when he screams out, “Please bury me with it.” In the song he basically says that he hates his life and wants to die, but in a much more poetic and mournful way than most artists can do.

Modest Mouse questions life and picks a fight with God in “Bukowski.” The band questions the unfairness of life: “God takes life / He’s an Indian giver,” and points out the unavoidable evil within the world: “Evil me / Oh yea I know.”

Evil becomes the theme of the next song, “The Devil’s Workday.” Brock takes on the role of a little devil as he sings, “Gonna take this sack of puppies / Gonna set it out to freeze.”

“Blame It On The Tetons” points out just how hypocritical people are with lyrics like, “Wore our blank expressions / Burning with no one to put the fire out.”

“The Good Times Are Killing Me” might hit home for many people with lyrics like, “Have one / Have twenty ‘one mores’ and oh, it does not relent” and “We talked all night / But oh what the hell did we say?”

Modest Mouse really shakes it up by using lots of neat instruments including mellotron, ukulele, fiddle, organ and the banjo. The Dirty Dozen Brass Band provides the horns for the CD.

Good News For People Who Love Bad News isn’t the kind of CD everyone would love mostly because it’s very depressing, and the lyrics are hard to understand because they all mumble together.

This year the turn out for Cavorts Talent Show resulted in packed lines and a 20-minute delay in showtime.

The first act, called Million Dollar Bob and the Pool Shark Posse, played “Times Like These” by the Foo Fighters.

Micah Wetzel brought in a notable performance of an original song that segued into “Brown Eyed Girl” by Van Morrison.

Wetzel’s rendition of the classic won over the audience by getting them involved in the singing, and most of them were on their feet by the end of his set.

The show paused for a news flash from a couple of hobos who thought very little of USD.

After the interlude Cameryn Christion sang Gretchen Wilson’s “Red Neck Woman,” which won her third place.

Michael Baule came in second with a xylophone rendition of “Log Cabin Blues” by George Hamilton Greene.

Last up was Clint Weckwerth who played “The Piano Man’s Second Montage.” As his fingers flew across the piano the crowd cheered. Weckwerth’s fancy fingerwork won first place for the second year in the row.

Although many enjoyed the two-and-a-half hour show, some in the crowd complained about the length and even left before it was over.

During a bonus section of stupid human tricks “Justin” proved just how stupid and tricky men can be by smashing bricks on various parts of his body.

While the audience waited to hear who the winners were, MCs Dietr Poppen and JD Henriksen did an abridged comedy version of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, which was arguably the best part of the whole show.

The entire audience laughed as Henriksen and Poppen proclaimed their love to each other as Romeo and Juliet.

Overall Cavorts was a good show, but many left wanting more.

Ashley Swanson, a sophomore pharmacy major, says the show would have been better “if there were a couple more contestants.” But also she says Cavorts was awesome and worth the three dollars students had to pay to get in.

Timothy Furness, a sophomore yet to declare a major, thought that the first group should have won. Even though they “weren’t the most talented,” he says, “I liked the music the best.”

Most students thought this year’s show was better than last and hope next year’s is even better.

Ryan Nelson, a senior majoring in park management, says, “It was a little longer [than last year's]; I liked it about the same.”

The new modular systems being made by Daktronics is a whole new way to design graphic boards.

The new system differs from the old system in that it is composed of a lot of little boards. These new boards will not replace the old ones, but are going to be a new product line, said Michael Cooper, manager of the mobile and modular group at Daktronics.

The Protour system was launched last week in Las Vegas at Lighting Dimension International (LDI).

The Protour system “works the same; provides the same application as any permanent board, but it’s made to move and be portable,” Cooper said.

The main audience for this type of machines will be production and rental companies, Cooper said. The big advantage of the new system is that they are easy to put up and take down because they are broken into many different boards that come together.

Because of the many little boards and the structure of connecting them the Protour boards will cost more.

“It’s a brand new approach for us,” Cooper said.

Lack of commitment and money stood in the way of the Women’s Hockey Club last year, but this year with more interest from its members and some money from the Student Association, the club is reviving.

Women haven’t been playing organized hockey in South Dakota for very long, and girl’s hockey in high schools only started about five years ago, said women’s hockey coach Heath Isaacson.

Most of the college freshman this year that want to play hockey at SDSU played in high school, Isaacson said.

“The longer someone plays the sport the more attached they’ll be,” said women’s hockey coach Heath Isaacson.

Practice starts the first week in November at the Larson Ice Arena. The team has four games scheduled with Iowa State University-two hosted by Iowa State and two by SDSU.

The team needs to register with the American Coalition Hockey Association (ACHA) and go through a one-year probation period. During the probation period other teams don’t usually want to play the team because a win against them does not count on their record, Isaacson said. After the probation period they can play against other women’s teams in Minnesota, Iowa, and North Dakota, Isaacson said.

“We are a new team,” said Rachael Person, a junior animal science major from Pierre. “It’s a great sport. The pace of it is what really makes me like it.”

Melissa Anderson, a biology major from Waubay said she’s really excited about this year. She’s been playing since high school and will be the goalie this year.

Anderson said she hopes the cost of playing, which might be $100 to $200, doesn’t detour anyone from joining. The team gets a little funding from SDSU and discounts from local sports stores on equipment, she said

“Once you start you really get addicted,” Anderson said.

Love and friendship are only a click away.

The online dating scene is increasing in popularity. Sites such as Yahoo Personals and Match.com are doubling membership yearly according to BusinessWeek.com.

Most online dating services charge a fee for people to chat and exchange information. Yahoo Personals charges anywhere between $7.50-$19.95 depending on how many months a person signs up for. At eHarmony.com it costs anywhere from $21-$49.95 a month. Most sites follow a basic set-up of searching for singles, creating a profile, and subscribing to contact.

How many people are using these web services to meet people? According to date.com 24.3 percent of singles are using or have used online sites to meet people. But what about at SDSU?

Joe Small, a biology major from Watertown, says that he’s never talked to anyone he didn’t know on the Internet. He says he’s “nervous they aren’t who they say they are.” Ryan Whisney, a senior wildlife and fisheries major from Jackson, M.N., says he’s talked to people he met on the Internet, but has never met them. He doesn’t think it’s dangerous, but he just wouldn’t want to meet someone that way.

So why do people meet online instead of dating traditionally? Although research has been done on the topic it is hard to come up with a concrete answer.

Meredith Redlin, who teaches sociology at SDSU, thinks it must have something to do with the delay of social nervousness. She says it also makes it easier for people in small rural communities to meet people they don’t already know.

“It’s just another way to meet people,” says Ron Stover, who teaches sociology. He says in the old days there were blind dates and this is sort of like a spin off of that concept. The big difference is that the physical aspects are gone for the most part.

Audra Markwed, a fifth-year senior majoring in art and Spanish from Brookings says that she has never had the desire to look at online dating services. She thinks it could be dangerous because “that person could be lying.”

For over 20 years the record for most field goals in a game has been held by Russ Meier after he kicked four in one game. That changed at the last home game when freshman kicker Parker Douglass kicked six field goals in one game, and it was only his third game.

South Dakota State University did not start their sport’s records book until the 1950s. However, there was one football game in 1922 against Columbus College that was so well-played that someone wrote down the statistics. A few of the records set at this game are still holding their place in the record book. These records include the eight touchdowns made in a single game by Ross Owen. Owen scored 48 points, a feat that keeps him in the book of records. Owen is also in the SDSU Hall of Fame.

Jeff Tiefenthaler was another valuable player. He holds the record for most receiving yards in a single game at 256, set against North Dakota State in 1986. He was recruited by SDSU to run track and field, but tried out for the football team on a dare from his buddies.

Ted Wahl keeps the record for most offensive yards in a game at 439. Originally from Bismarck, he set this record playing his home state of North Dakota in 1988.

Adam Vinatieri is the player that most SDSU and NFL fans know. Vintieri demolished the old record in 1994, averaging 43.5 yards per kick. He set the SDSU mark for kicking the longest field goal of 51 yards-he did this twice. He’s also scored the most points scored by a place kicker, at 195 and most career PATs (points after touchdown) at 104 and career field goals with 27.

Ron Lenz, SDSU’s athletic information director, remembers him as an excellent and versatile player. He remembered a game against Augustana when Vinatieri punted 50 yards into the wind.

“He was just so good,” Lenz said.

Josh Ranek, former running back, holds quite a few records including 170 points (28 touchdowns) made in a single season and 426 points (69 touchdowns) in his career at SDSU. All together Ranek holds 15 records-the most of anybody. He left SDSU as the career-rushing leader not only at SDSU, but also in the North Central Conference. In 2001 he was one of three finalists for the Harlon Hill Trophy as the Division II Player of the Year.

Lenz said that Ranek had so many great plays it is hard to remember just one of them. He was famous for turning small plays into big ones. Ranek is still playing football with the Ottawa Renegades of the Canadian Football League.

Warren Rosser’s name might not be familiar to you, but he’s well known in the art world.

His work is currently on display at the South Dakota Art Museum. and his artist’s reception is Friday, Sept. 24 at 5:30 p.m.

Originally from South Wales, Rosser was trained as a painter, but sculpted in the 80s. In 1998 he returned to painting and has been working on his series “To be continued…” that is now on exhibit at the art museum.

The exhibit will be shown until Dec. 5 and showcases some of his work done between 1998 and now.

His work is considered incredibly fresh and bold by art critics, with most of his canvases at least six feet high.

Unlike many painters, Rosser doesn’t use paintbrushes. Instead he chooses to make his mark with palette knives, stencils, squeegees, and masking tape.

The reception is free and Rosser will be available to answer qestionsabout his work.
