“Hey faggot, can’t you see I am talking you?”

Imagine looking out of your window to see a random truck in your driveway. As your suspicion rises and you see a group of hicks spitting on your car and only because of a sticker on your bumper.

Homophobia is a word used to describe discrimination against gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people.

Homophobia is the fear and hatred of homosexuals and people to be perceived to be homosexual. Amazingly homophobia exists everywhere and a large percentage of people are homophobic. Students on the SDSU campus may be no exception. Doctors, priests, family, friends, teachers, Boy Scouts of America, celebrities, politicians, and even the President of the United States can all participate in the homophobic attitudes of our day-to-day society.

When considering homophobia, it is important to look at the differences between prejudice and discrimination.

Many people, including college students, may have prejudice attitudes or stereotypes of gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender people. They may not necessarily act on these prejudices in a way that would interfere with the rights of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people.

Rainbow Connections is an on campus organization set up to support the small community of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender students.

“It is very important for us to have a support group, Rainbow Connection, here on campus. It gives people a sense of belonging and community, along with the fact that they can make friends with others in their same situation,” said Angela Baxter, president of Rainbow Connections.

When trying to describe or understand homophobic attitudes there are many aspects to look at that influence how people think. Environmental surroundings play a huge role in the progression of people attitudes.

Certain groups within society may influence and increase a person’s level of homophobia. Religious activists and Mormons provide a good example of extreme homophobic attitudes by not tolerating homosexuality within their churches.

Home is another aspect to consider. People tend to be the product of their parents beliefs; therefore, if their parents have homophobic attitudes, they are more likely to have homophobic attitudes themselves.

“There are a lot of homophobic attitudes, but it is more our region because it is very rural and not the campus itself,” Baxter said. “The students on campus are much more accepting and I have not been victim of any discrimination here at SDSU. There is a lot of homophobia because students fear the unknown and have been brought up to look at it as wrong, so they are afraid of it.”

Homophobic attitudes towards homosexual males seem to be more common among heterosexual males than heterosexual females, according to recent studies. In spite of this, other findings found that attitudes about homosexual females do not differ between male and female heterosexuals.

An explanation of homophobia is described as a fear factor.

Many men believe they have to be homophobic in order to prove their masculinity. Their behavior towards homosexuality is a way of showing others they are not gay.

Studies have shown that many people with homophobic attitudes often have same sex attractions themselves (Adams, Wright & Lohr 1996). It is a possibility as people begin to realize their sexuality they may go into denial and start to develop a homophobic attitude, which acts as their defense mechanism.

A survey from the National Mental Health Association (NMHA) provides clear evidence that bullying and other harassments towards gay teens or those perceived to be gay is common in American schools and society.

The introduction of human sexuality courses to college curriculums may help reduce homophobic attitudes among many students.

“There are a number of reasons for homophobia, or fear of homosexuality, but I think much of it is born out of misunderstand or lack of understanding. By discussing sexual orientation, my intent is not to make students accept homosexuality, even if it is against their moral values, but rather to respect the dignity of gay men and lesbian woman and to understand life from a gay perspective, which still includes discrimination and harassment,” said Cindi Penor Ceglian, professor of human sexuality. “I also hope they understand that homosexuality is also about relationships, not just sex, which is, in fact, a small part of a person’s lifestyle.”<cp_showmedia position="2">

Is ignorance what breeds homophobia? To educate society about homosexuality may help to decrease homophobia.

Many people who are unfamiliar or inexperienced in having gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people in their lives form very narrow stereotypes. Numerous people stereotype gay men as feminine and lesbians as masculine and they fail to realize how mistaken or far off the mark they actually are. Consequently, there are many feminine gay men and butch “manly” women, but to only have that image is like saying all priests are pedophiles and all Asian people are terrorists.

“Although we can pass legislation, including nondiscrimination and hate statues, social science research indicates that people’s attitudes are most significantly influenced by their interactions,” Penor Ceglian said. “After lecturing about sexual orientation, I invite members of the gay and lesbian community to my class to speak about their lives. Interacting with someone puts a face and a personality on a label, which in turn helps them empathize.”

The effects of homophobia within society can be deadly. Homophobia causes people to hurt or even kill members of their communities. The leading cause of death among gay teenagers is suicide; this fact alone shows just how the consequences of discrimination by homophobic attitudes can cause destruction on our society.

It is time to realize just how much homophobic attitudes contribute to the destruction of many lives of many people in our communities.

To be different or to love same sex people does not threaten masculinity of males, nor does it threaten religious beliefs.

It allows each individual person to find peace and love in their lives.

Trying to ignore or hide homophobia will only cause more destruction and discrimination within our culture and the problem will not disappear until people find a way to stop the pervasive attitudes associated with homophobia. Homophobia does not just affect homosexuals it affects everyone.

As I walk across Medary, I find myself to be very cautious of the traffic, just like home. The amazing thing is, is that just two blocks parallel with Medary you don’t need to walk with such caution; drivers stop willingly to allow you to cross the road.

How can there be such a difference in the attitudes of drivers within only a couple of blocks?

Last spring, I was asked by a friendly face in one of my classes to tell her about England. It suddenly dawned on me that I had better warn her about crossing the roads.

I sat picturing how different our opinions of driving and stop. My advice was simply this: “Don’t just walk out on to a road like we do here, we have very different rules for crossing the road, and if you find yourself in the middle, find the quickest way to the other side because the people will not stop.”

In England there are no laws about stopping for pedestrians to cross the road. Drivers are suppose to stop when pedestrians are waiting at zebra crossings, however, it’s mainly the traffic light crossings that drivers take notice of. There are many that go through the lights and many that are trying to drive away before the pedestrians have reached the other side of the road. It really makes no difference to drivers in the UK.

We have two types of crossings: zebra crossings and pedestrian “traffic light” crossings. Zebra crossings are the white strips painted on the road much like some of the crossing around campus, but we have black and white painted poles with flashing yellow balls on top to help drivers make the distinction.

The speed limit on our motorways is 70 miles per hour, you can do 80 without being stopped, many drivers push it to 90, and there are many who drive at 100 miles an hour.

It is against the law to not wear your seat belt in England and there are many laws about passengers in your car also. You can be stopped for not having your seat belt on and it is an automatic fine on the spot. If your passenger is under the age of 18 then it is you, the driver, is responsible for them not wearing a seat belt.

I think this has only contributed to our way of driving faster. It like we have a false sense of safety because of the seat belts, but in reality seat belts only help reduce the impact of an accident; they do not prevent it.

The introduction of speed cameras on the roads has definitely made drivers more cautious. However, you can find ways to cheat the system. I was one of those who had figured out how to get from point a to point the fastest way possible, skipping through all the cameras without getting caught.

When the cameras were first introduced to the roads, drivers were alarmed by them. However, over the years the maintenance on them has fallen.

I remember one time I got lost and was flashed by the same camera twice in the space of about 15 minutes and I never received a ticket about it.

If you ever go to the United Kingdom, be warned about the drivers and be cautious at all times.

Oh, and look the opposite way when crossing the street because we drive on the opposite side of the road.

Entering the pow-wow, the first thing I heard was the clinking of bells, lots of bells, and then before me stood the most amazing sight, a dancer dressed in his native tribal attire.

As I walked into the main hall, I didn’t know where to look first. My eyes raced over Frost Arena, looking at all the dancers and native people and their costumes. My first ever pow-wow, and I just stood their gob smacked.

A prayer started the occasion, and the spoken words in native tongue fluttered in the air. I closed my eyes and became unaware of where I was, listening hard to every word that was spoken.

Each word I heard, unfamiliar like the next and the one before, but I still listened. I almost felt hypnotized by the sound of the language and the tone of the speaker’s voice.

My lack of understanding didn’t stand in the way, and I felt almost a spiritual connection, and therefore an understanding of the spoken prayer.

When the opening ceremony got underway, the drumbeats began and the chants rang out over any other noise.

It has to be the most amazing sound my ears have ever heard. Standing only a foot away from the chanters and drums, my body was flushed immediately with goose bumps. The different tones of music rang untouched around Frost Arena and they were soon joined by the sound of the dancers bells.

The movement of the line of dancers as they slowly appeared onto their stage seemed so natural and in rhythm with each beat. The flowing movement of their costumes seemed surreal, but enchanting.

I couldn’t take my eyes off the dancers as they kept coming closer and closer towards me.

I began to see their clear faces and the delicate detail of their outfits. Their moccasins and feathered headresses were simply indescribable.

The way the dancers moved with the beats of the music and their personal connection with each beat and chants seemed effortless.

It almost seemed like they glided from beat to beat in the way they found movement so freely as they danced into the ceremony.

Over time I could distinguish the dancing differences between men and women. The men moved with a full footstep and stiff movement to each beat, and the women danced on their toes and moved more freely, as if they were an eagle gliding in the sky. The sound of the bells together as they danced was soothing and joyful. The whole sound, which accumulated throughout each dance, entranced my heart and soul in the powerful beat of the drums and the comforting sound of the bells.

Each chant rang out like a call of tribal power. The intensity startled me to begin with, but I soon realized the restful sound.

It smothered my thinking into only hearing the chants and the beat of each drum that vibrated through my chest with such delicacy. The cries of each song made me think of wide-open spaces of the Plains, and how this sound must sound even more spine tingling in open air.

It was like the music held me in a trance for two hours. It was a power that I have not experienced before, and don’t think I will again unless I go to another pow-wow. It held my attention immensely and I was mesmerized by the amount of culture before my eyes. It made me feel as though I wanted to join in and start dancing, I could feel my toes tapping and my instinct to want to dance as the drum beats rang out. I thought to myself ‘control yourself girl, you will only show yourself up trying to dance among the native dancers. You do not dance like them nor do you understand the meaning behind their rhythm so stop trying to think you could just start dancing.’

The color of their costumes was beautiful, sparkling reflections among the lights from certain mirrors attached to their clothing. The arrangement of many feathers on the back of many dancers was creative but peaceful.

Each dancer’s costume different from the next and the individuality of the head pieces was wonderful. The delicate sewing and needlework showed, but the simplicity of the design showed astonishing creativity.

I took pictures upon pictures hoping to capture that one fine moment to remember my first pow-wow.

I wandered aimlessly, admiring such an amazing culture, and resumed thinking just how lucky I was to be there.

I closed my eyes one last time to breath the comforting energy into my body so that I could continue to breath for many moments after, and carry it within the rhythm of my steps as I walked home.

I picked up my coat and lingered even more. After I watched the dancers dance, I left feeling exhilarated and touched by my first ever Wacipi.

I find myself again realizing that the English people are definitely ruder than Americans. It has taken me until now to realize just how different the attitudes are. It may also be the fact that I was entertaining a friend of mine from Vermont over the holidays that made it all the more noticeable.

I think there is also the fact that the two states, Vermont and South Dakota, that I have spent my college years have been very rural.

The American culture just seems to come with a friendly “hello” or “what’s up.” Everybody is always so eager to help or assist you, whereas in England, you are lucky to even receive eye contact from some people.

When I think about it, I find it ironic because America is the place of doing everything yesterday. Americans have ways of speeding up almost everything they do. Americans are people that want everything done instantly, but still seem to offer a friendly smile and simply care about what you are doing or the situation you are in.

The English offer a stiffer attitude to time and punctuation. We most definitely look at time as a linear line, and we just get all worked up if we think that Billy Bob is not pulling his/her weight. You don’t take naps in England, and heaven forbid you need to leave early from work.

Now, I would be silly to say all people are like this and that there are no Americans that don’t have the same outlook or attitude as the English people I am talking about.

Maybe it’s just the changing attitude of the world and not an English society thing. Maybe a lot of Americans from rural parts of America have the same opinion of city people right here in this country. Maybe it is an individual thing and it depends on the person or the situation.

When you are away from what you have always known, I think you change and grow.

It’s funny because I love Newcastle and I am very proud of the fact that I am English. I love my sense of belonging to where I grew up and would never want to know life in a different way, but it saddens me to think that as a culture we have forgotten to care.

Have you ever wondered what would have happened if John F. Kennedy had lived? I do.

The possibilities of having an interracial society could have been endless.

I often wonder what it would be like to live in a society that does not hold prejudice in their hearts about other people’s differences, appearances or color of their skin.

I wonder if JFK could have forced the changes in society that still exist in present day America.

I wonder if he actually held the key to the possibility of people changing how they view each person within their community.

I really do wonder what life would be like without prejudice.

Why does change scare society or culture, and why do we still, in this present state of the technologically advanced world, have prejudice against people that are of a different skin color, religion, sexuality or origin.

Who ever decided what was normal anyway?

And when did it become carved in stone?

Just because the skin of a person is darker or lighter than your own doesn’t mean they are any different.

My journey through life has brought me to South Dakota, a state that has a large population of Native American people, reservations and so much history.

However, I am flabbergasted to still find hatred and prejudice in the hearts of white South Dakotans.

It amazes me that my own race of people can still hold this standpoint.

I do not know how white America can dare to look Native Americans in the face continuously telling them lies, promising them justice and giving them nothing.

We have written and photographic proof of what we did to a whole nation of people and their families and still we do nothing.

We stood there watching as we completely demolished everything the native people believed in.

Each day we still continuously judge native people.

We look down at reservations.

We blame the Native Americans for the problems and poverty that are occurring within current day reservations.

The types of issues that are occurring on reservations right now are the effects from years of abuse and discrimination of white people on the Native American culture.

Think about Japan invading America for a minute, and think about them, stealing our culture and changing everything about mainstream America with nothing we could do about it.

We fought wars and did everything possible to restrain this attack. Fortunately, we did. But what if we hadn’t?

Let’s think about how many Americans would turn to drink and drugs as a way to escape this life-changing ordeal and think about how this could relate to the Native American culture.

American society is not alone in racism and prejudice behavior by any means. England was the first to enslave people, I do not excuse my native people’s behavior.

I guess this leads me to the question “When I think about America what do I really see?”

Do I really see a thriving, striving and patriotic country that stands as one and a country that wants to be at the top of the economic and political mountain?

I don’t really know what I see because when I think about what America is built from, I find myself with many new questions.

I think about the people who left their own society and country to come to the new world looking for a life that was different from what they knew. They did find a new and beautiful country but turned it, over time, into the same society they left.

Maybe if we all look close enough we might see the reason why mainstream America continues to walk around with hatred in their eyes.

What we see today in society is the effects and outcome of years of prejudice in the hearts of so many people and the problem will remain.

That is, until someone like JFK rolls around again and leads us all to a united place.

Being 22 and not really knowing what you want to do in life is a funny situation to be in.

English kids go to high school when they are 11 years old. Middle schools, like American junior high schools, are around. But in most schools, you start at 11 and you graduate when you are 16.

For the first three years, English kids are told what classes to take.

We were formatted into a form class with a form teacher and into sets based on the results of our primary school education, i.e. the standard of our work and our results from our classroom work and the level of our reading ability.

In year nine, the third year of high school, we had to start thinking about what G.C.S.E (General Certification of Secondary Education) we were going to take.

We had end-of-year exams that placed us into sets for the next and most important years of our lives.

Once we had chosen our subjects along with our core subjects, we had our whole line up for our high school graduation.

The last two years of high school, in my opinion should have been the foundation for me to learn, study and prepare for my G.C.S.E. exams. Unless I was living on Venus in that time, I do not remember ever being prepared for anything.

The saddest thing is that I don’t ever remember once in high school that I was shown what and how I could study.

We never heard of such things as “lifetime learning skills” or had one person actually pointing out to us what we needed to accomplish and how we were going to accomplish it.

I never really knew how to study. In fact, I don’t think I ever read a single book in high school.

We didn’t have to buy books for our subjects; it was all in the curriculum and was supposed to be taught to us. The only books we ever saw were the English books the teacher would read to us.

Looking back on the type of material that we covered in our core classes like English and math, it is funny how the material was chosen based on what set , or level, we were in.

Set one and two people were studying Shakespeare and set three through five people like me were studying Kes.

If I hadn’t come to America to study, I would have never gone back to any form of education in England.

I would have still been doing the same old sh- – I was back then.

In fact, I also believe that if I had arrived upon the doorstep of education in the U.S. and found the same uncaring system I don’t think I would have survived.

I came to find a reason and meaning behind learning education I have been receiving for the last three years of my life has allowed me to find a groove and pursue a dream that I wasn’t supposed to be a part of.

People like me are not supposed to go to college.

We are supposed to leave school and go onto a YTS (youth training scheme) course that pays you $50 a week for two or three years, supposedly training you in a profession. It is more like an eligible excuse for workshop labor.

People like me are supposed to just slot into the middle-of-the- road lifestyle and bear children, but I am the one that broke the mold and coming to the U.S. made the difference.

When I was 16 years old I had to go and see a career woman at school.

“Do you know what you would actually want to do for a career Miss Fagan?” she asked with a smug tone in her voice.

I said, “Yes I would love to be a physical education teacher some day.”

Her reply has been a huge motivation ever since.

“Oh really, well it’s always good to have high expectations for ourselves, but have you ever considered retail?”

Without speaking another word and without a single thought of hesitation, I got up and walked out of that room and slammed the door behind me.

Slamming that door made all the difference in my life.

Both English and Americans like to have a drink; the only difference is that the English are not afraid to tell the rest of the world.

Why is the average American so afraid to admit they enjoy a sociable beverage?

I guess the answer lies deep beneath the old American dream and I haven’t figured it out yet.

Alcohol is almost everywhere and almost everyone is drinking it, so I caution parents to not be fooled by their adolescents because they do find ways to do it.

Young kids are the only innocencent ones, but once they are confronted with peer pressure they will find ways to do it.

You did it didn’t you? We all did.

Arriving in the U.S. at the age of 22, the drinking age that comes with being in the new world has not really affected my own lifestyle, however I continue to witness the uncontrolled behavior of young Americans indulged in alcohol.

Young Americans are fiends for alcohol. I don’t know what or how American society has done to create such an ongoing problem with underage drinking.

Being a self-supporting international student, I have chosen through necessity to live in residential housing for my four years of college, and it is there that I have gained my knowledge and opinion of underage American college students.

When thinking about it, I don’t know if it is plainly the fact that young Americans are not allowed to drink that has instigated a rebellious movement, or whether it is the fact that authority figures over-emphasize, but don’t over-punish young people when they are caught that has instilled them with this attitude about drinking alcohol.

I was 13 years old when I had my first taste of alcohol and I guess you might say I have been drinking ever since, but I am yet to behave in the same way as the majority of American college students.

Now perhaps you are thinking, she was 13 when she had her first drink! That’s so young! However, the same thing is happening right now throughout America and society fails to recognize it.

I am aware of the fact that not all college students drink and my opinion is not an all-encompassing statement, but I would like to add that the college students who do not drink stand as a minority.

In the United Kingdom, 18 is the secret age to drink, so maybe the problem lies in the fact that you have to be 21 to drink in the U.S.

When I go out for a drink I don’t need to get drunk, we enjoy what the English call a “sociable bevy,” and so far that concept seems to hold no weight to Americans.

Now, in the U.K. we are accepting of spending our lunch time in the pub, eating pub food and having a pint. However, if an American returned to work after lunch with any indication of alcohol use, they would be signed into a branch of Alcoholics Anonymous by two that afternoon.

So could it be simply a cultural thing or does it come down to the difference in maturity levels of both cultures?

Does the answer to this problem solely rely on the fact that Americans are not allowed to drink until they are 21 and therefore have a much more insubordinate attitude?

Growing up in a country and a society that never really overemphasized the “Not old enough to drink” policy, I guess I never gave the drinking age limit much thought until now.

We must ask ourselves, has alcohol become our only way to accept silly behavior or have we just turned alcohol into an excuse tool for our own insecurities?
