On Nov. 4-6 the nursing department will sponsor a blood drive on campus conducted by the Red Cross.

“Giving blood is all about saving lives,” said Denny Hagglund, manager of the donor recruitment department, “It happens everyday.”

The blood drive will be held in the Volstorff Ballroom in the University Student Union.

Blood donations will be accepted on Tuesday from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. and on Wednesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Due to some 250 units of blood being used a day as a result of the recent wildfires in Southern California, Red Cross officials say that the blood supply in America has seriously been depleted.

The Red Cross is in need of Type O blood as well as all types of negative blood.

The blood-mobile that will be present at the drive comes from North-Central Blood Services of St. Paul, Minn.

Schools make up fifteen percent of the center’s annual collection, or roughly 36,000 units.

Q: Please state your full name.

A: Peggy Gordon Miller.

Q:And you are from?

A: I grew up in a town in southwestern Kentucky called Mayfield.

Q:And where did you go to school?

A: I received my bachelor’s degree and an honorary doctorate from Transylvania University which is the oldest university west of the Alleghenies.

I got my masters from Northwestern University where I’m also a distunguished alum in education and social policy.

I also have a doctorate degree from Indiana University. My son and daughter are always kidding me, telling me I’m going to take classes as long as they print catalogs.

Q: And your position?

A: President of South Dakota State University.

Q: What’s your favorite part of your job?

A: There are so many things that I don’t know if I can say.

I think that the students are the most rewarding.

On a tough day I only have to go the Union to feel better.

Another wonderful aspect are the faculty and the staff.

They really care about the students and many times put the students before themselves.

They really want it to be a good place to teach and learn.

Q: What’s the least favorite part of your job?

A: Not having enough dollars for the wondeful things students and faculty can do.

Maybe I can become friends with Bill Gates or win the lottery so there’s money for people.

There really is no telling how many good projects and ideas never really come to life because we can’t buy the time or equipment for them.

Q: What do you find most exciting about SDSU?

A: The promise of all of these bright, new students.

Every year there’s a new combination of minds at a university.

You cannot predict the interfaces and synergies that could occur and the ideas that can come out.

Every year its a present of a new class that good things can come out of.

Never in the universe before have these minds been together and there are always enormous possibilities.

Q:What have been your favorite classes in your long academic career?

A: Any class where you could read, as well as science classes.

Q: What were your least favorite classes?

A: Without hesitation I say French. We were in an experimental immersion group and that was the wrong technique for me.

I learned enough to survive.

Lets just say I will never starve to death in France, but I sure would hate to have to make a speech.

Q: What’s your biggest piece of advice for students?

A: Take advantage of everything, not each other, but everything.

Try out all the things the university has to offer, but not beer and driving fast.

Show up and learn about women’s soccer, anthropology or the Art Musuem.

This is the only time in your life when you are invited to explore.

Adlai Stevenson once said that college is the “last great springtime.”

Q: Please state your name.

A: Ashley Kenneth Allen.

Q: And you are from?

A: Madison, South Dakota.

Q: Your position is?

A: Station manager for KSDJ.

Q: What is your major?

A: Speech communication with a minor in radio, television, and film.

Q: How is KSDJ funded?

A: KSDJ is funded with student fee dollars which are appropriated from the Students’ Association.

It is also through underwriting donations from local businesses and individuals.

Q: Who decides the format, KSDJ or the Students’ Association?

A: The station is an alternative rock station which was decided on by our station staff last year.

It was voted and approved by the media council, which is a sub-committee of the Students’ Association.

Q: How much of your funding do you get from advertising?

A: Fifty percent.

Q: How can a student become involved with KSDJ?

Q: What is the hardest part of your job?

A: Being a full-time student and trying to devote as much time as possible to the station.

Q: What’s your favorite part of your job?

A: My favorite part of my job would be getting to interact with all the students and SDSU and promote SDSU.

Q: How much longer will you be attending school and running the radio station?

A: I’m not for sure, but I’m hoping to graduate by 2006.

Q: What kind of a signal does KSDJ carry?

A: We have a 1000 watt signal which gives about a 30-40 mile radius around Brookings.

Q: Do you have an idea of how many people listen to your radio station?

A: Unfortunately we don’t have access to arbitron numbers.

Arbitron is what gives numbers for radio stations.

But we are able to tell how many people are listening online with our new radio stream.

There’s reports that show that ten percent of your listening base will listen online.

So we can guess according to how many people are listening online. It’s really hard to tell.

I guess the only way we can kind of tell is by visiting local businesses and seeing people drive by in cars.

We also notice the students’ response to who’s listening and how many show up at things we promote.

Q: Would you ever change to hard-core urban hip-hop?

A: If the students supported it we would definitely change to hard-core hip-hop and rap if we felt that the student body would listen to that.

Riots erupted outside of off-campus housing in Mankato after the Minnesota State University-Mankato football team lost their homecoming game to North Dakota State University on Saturday.

“The notion that Mankato students were distraught over our football team’s loss is utterly ridiculous,” said Nick Morriston, senior political science major at Minnesota State University-Mankato, “No one cares, especially those that go to homecoming.”

A large crowd of several hundred people had congregated in front of the Campus View and Monk’s Place Apartments to partake in post-game festivities.

Around 11:30 p.m. the local authorities, who had been monitoring the crowd, decided the gathering had become rowdy enough to break-up.

After informing the students to go home, the police then shot tear-gas pellets into the crowd to hasten the dispersement.

It was at this time that the police realized that the crowd had become too large to handle, and therefore were forced to call the Minneapolis police force for assistance.

While the Mankato police were waiting for their reinforcements, the crowd grew to a violent fracas of over 3000 people.

Police helicopters flew above as fires were set, cars were vandalized, and several people were reported to be assaulted.

The crowd was finally dispersed by 4:30 a.m.

All told, by the end of the night 45 people were arrested and 16 were injured.

Mankato officials are blaming the students’ behavior on alcohol consumption following the game.

National news media have cited the university’s winless football season and homecoming loss as a flashpoint for the riot.

Disciplinary action by the university against the students has yet to be determined.

“Mankato has a drinking problem,” said Morriston, “and up until now its been ignored.”

Democrats

Q: Please state your full name.

A: Amanda Mattingly.

Q: Your major?

A: History.

Q: And your position?

A: I am secretary of the College Democrats.

Q: What made you become a Democrat?

A: Well, one of the main reasons I became a Democrat is because it was pretty much embedded in my family. While I was growing up, I researched more and I’ve learned that the Democratic party is the party for the workingman and for the middle class. I will make no reservations in that my family is middle class, always have been and always will be. I believe that the Democratic party will work for people like my family more than the Republican Party would.

Q: What does the College Democrats have planned for this year?

A: This year we have a lot of great stuff planned, especially with the election coming up in 2004. We are planning a lot of events to support Tom Daschle to get him re-elected because we really need him in the Senate still. We are planning a mock convention in January. It’s going to be a huge event dealing with the primary election that is going to take place.

Q: When do you meet?

A: We meet every other Monday night at 5 p.m. in the Jackrabbit Room.

Q: What has been your favorite part of being a member of the College Democrats?

A: I have been a member since I transferred to SDSU last fall. I think one of the best parts about being a member is the opportunities it opens for you. I am very interested in politics and someday I would like to be involved in politics and I have found that my involvement with the SDSU College Democrats would look great as a reference.

Q:Who would win in a fistfight: George W. Bush or Bill Clinton?

A: Well, Bill Clinton of course, because George would be hiding behind his dad.

Republicans

Q: Please state your full name.

A: Justin Benson.

Q: Your major?

A: Agricultural Engineering.

Q: And your position?

A: I am the vice-chairman of the College Republicans.

Q: How did you get your position?

A: We had elections last spring.

Q: How long have you been in the College Republicans?

A: About a year and a half.

Q: How often do you guys meet?

A: About two or three times a month.

Q: Does the College Republicans have a lot of plans for this year?

A: We have quite a few actually. For the club, we are going to be involved with the State Republicans for the state convention.

We will be going to Washington D.C. in January for the Conservative Political Action Conference.

And there are some other fun activities we haven’t decided on yet, some fundraisers and team building activities.

Q: What made you decide to be a Republican?

A: Well, I’m a Republican for several reasons. My biggest one is that I believe in personal accountability.

People have to make choices, like to get married before you have kids, how they spend their money, or get an education.

Personal accountability is important because the government can’t just bail people out.

And another basis of me being a Republican is that we live in the greatest nation in the world and it’s just that there is so much opportunity here and we need to make sure they have that opportunity and not limit them by having a large government and higher taxes.

We should just let them do what they want and have the freedoms and rights that this country has promised.

Q: Were your parents Republican?

A: Yes.

Q:Who would win in a fistfight: George W. Bush or Bill Clinton?

A: Bush. Clinton would probably be stoned or something.

I gotta go with Bush even though Clinton’s a little bigger.

Q: Please state your full name.

A: Scott Munseterman.

Q: And your position?

A: I am mayor of Brookings.

Q: What was your major in college?

A: I am a chiropractor. I’m originally from Morris, Minn. I served my undergraduate there and then went on to Northwestern Chiropractic College in Bloomington, graduated therewith my doctorate in ’84 and then established my practice in Brookings in ’85. I’ve been in practice in Brookings for about eighteen years.

Q: And what about your family?

A: I have five daughters. My oldest daughter is in the Army Reserve. She was recently deactivated. She’s 22 and will be starting college again since she was taken out for activation. I have another daughter who is here at SDSU for her freshman year. I have another daughter that’s a sophomore and one that’s a fifth-grader and one that’s a second-grader.

Q: What is it like to be mayor?

A: I’m enjoying it. Our city government went through a change about four years ago. We went from a commission form of government to a council form of government. They hired a city manager about four years ago. The council operates and functionns just like a policy making body and then the city manager acts as the CEO and carries out the policy. So there’s no administrative duties to my position but it allows me to do more leadership things with people in the community and boards and some of those things and my main focus has been more along the lines of unity. Trying to bring people together more towards common goals and visions.

Q: How do you see SDSU fitting into the Brookings picture?

A: It fits in so many different ways.

The thing that comes into the top of my mind is the kids here really are our number one resource that we have. Not only in our community, but in our state as well. And we have made the decision to design our economic development program around you guys.

We’re looking at trying to create jobs, we’re looking at expanding the are through developing a research park., puutting knowledge to work in ways that can attract companies to our state and to our community. So it will all hinge on stuff that you guys learn. So that we can keep you here.

Q: What is the third “B” tax?

A: The third “B” is the tax on unprepared foods. The other two “Bs” are booze and beds. We think the third “B” would raise $250,000 so it’s quite a chunk of change.

Q: Where are you at as far as bringing back the third ‘B’ tax?

A: We are working on a promotional plan right now. We are approaching it on a standpoint of three phases.

First phase is we had somebody from SDSU, Abby Bischoff, serve on an ad hoc committe, and what they did was come up with several strategies to draw promotion to Brookings.

The next stage we are going to take is to get all these different groups that do promotion in Brookings to get together in one room and work with these strategies and then we are going to bring it to council where we are going to adopt it into a policy. Then budgeting and spending will depend upon what we decide for policy.

The third “B” comes in after that because we are going to need some funding mechanisms to make that policy happen. We understand that there are a couple of issues surrounding the third “B.” Number one being that students here at SDSU are forced into a tax, it’s not a tax that they can volunteer to take. I think we are the only community that’s a larger community that doesn’t have a third “B.”The recommendation that I have made to the student body is that you guys need to go to the state legislature and try to get that off.

I’d be happy to help anyway that I can. Because it isn’t right that it should be on there, but if it turns out that we can’t get it off together, then I feel that that would bring us together as far as getting the job done. If that means apportioning out those funds to some events that would benefit SDSU’s promotion, I think more people would be receptive to that idea if we cross the legislative hurdle first.

Q: What knowledge would you like to pass on to the student body?

A: I went through a lot of school and one of the hardest things for me was to maintain a good focus on what I wanted to be.

I just want to encourage the students to work hard. You need to hang in there, work hard andkeep focused on what you want to do.

Really seek the purpose for who you are and what you are made to be and just get online with it, because it’s very fulfilling once you get there.

Last spring SDSU elected Eric Erickson as President of the Students’ Association. The following is an interrogation of our very own Mr. President.

Q: Please state your full name.

A: Eric E. Erickson.

Q: And you are from?

A: Summit, SD.

Q:And your major?

A: Political science.

Q: And your position?

A: President of the Students’ Association.

Q: What do you guys hope to accomplish this year on the SA?

A: We’ve got just a ton of goals.

Some of the things we’re looking at are the parking issue, the student union expansion, Division I.

They are all big things that are taking up a lot of our time, but we’ve got about fifty goals, some of them pretty small, some of them bigger.

We are at going to look into them and see if they are a good idea and the best way to accomplish them.

Q: What would you like freshman to know about what the SA does?

A: Well we basically do anything that any student would need.

If we can’t help you, we can at least direct you to where you can get help.

We usually have a hand in anything on campus. We sit on all the committees on campus so we can change some stuff.

We’ve also got free legal aid. Anything a student can come up with, just stop by the office and give us ideas.

We can’t really do anything about it if we don’t know about it.

Q: What’s your favorite part of your job?

A: Probably the people walks.

Getting out and talking to people, finding out if they have any problems and if they do, helping them fix those problems.

Q: What’s the least favorite part of your job?

A: I don’t know. I like most of my job.

Every once in a while…

Well, I can’t think of anything.

Q: What is it like to run for SA president?

A: It takes a lot of time and a lot of money to do it.

Pretty much its your personal money you’re putting into it and you have to give a lot of speeches in front of people.

It’s fun if you win.

Q: Do you think you would ever run for public office?

A: Maybe.

I haven’t thought about that yet.

I would just like to be president of the United States.

Q: What’s your biggest piece of advice for freshmen?

A: Get involved.

Make sure you get out and talk to people.

Meet as many people as you can and the best way to do that is to become involved in organizations on campus.
