I figured I would write a column for all those graduating seniors about how to look professional on the job or for anyone doing internships. Remember, in order to look the part you also need to dress the part, so have a little fun with your work attire.

Wrong: Skinny-legged trousers

Right: Wide-legged trousers

Why: A good pair of dress pants will flatter your body and make you look right for any occasion. Wide-legged trousers are the most flattering pants for any body shape because they slim out the hips and thighs, balance wide shoulders and make your legs look longer. They look best when paired with a good pair of heels or flats. Dress them up by adding a suit jacket or make them more casual with a basic button-down. Or try a lacy tank and wear them out for a night on the town. Every woman should own a pair of these!

“I think that they are sexy, but make a woman look professional at the same time. The pants make a women look sharp but in a comfortable way,” said Bethany Bleeker, senior interdisciplinary studies major.

Wrong: Navy Punk Gothic Jackets

Right: Suit Jackets

Why: Polish your career wardrobe with a suit jacket. One with a defined waistline helps to make you look slimmer and taller. If you have a thick middle, make sure you are not buying a jacket that is cinched too much or you will not be comfortable and it will make you look bigger than you really are. Also, a cropped jacket can show off your narrow hips and long legs while a longer jacket can conceal a tummy and elongate a short torso. You will look leaner if you stay with one color throughout the suit, while a pattern will draw the eyes to areas you want highlighted. Suit jackets are easily worn with a simple little T-shirt and jeans or a lacy tank top and some wide-bottom trousers and can be worn for many different occasions whether it be casual, glam or professional.

“I think they look nice if the appropriate size is purchased. The cute ones with a high waist and bold colors can go really well with jeans or black pants,” said Blair Rau, senior human development and family studies major. “JC Penney and Target have really cute ones.”

Why:

As of now, there are three Greek chapters on the SDSU campus; the Greek Programming Board; the Panhellenic Council, which oversees the women’s chapter; and the Interfraternity Council, which oversees the men’s chapter.

This all will be changing so SDSU will have only two chapters: the IFC and the PHC. This means the Greek Programming Board will no longer exist. The chapters will meet every other week and will be called the Unified Greek Council.

Alec Vanhove, IFC President, said the only extra responsibility to be taken on after the dissolution of Greek Programming Board will be managing a budget and setting up Greek Week.

The presidents of each board will tackle the budget during their bi-weekly meetings.

Greek Week is normally set up by either the IFC or PHC. This year it was setup by GPB, which was not the normal routine. The obvious changes are one governing board dissolving and being replaced by the Unified Greek Council.

“Our hope is that by having a main governing board consisting of the IFC and PHC exec. boards, those people on the boards will have more knowledge of what is going on and what needs to be done within the Greek community,” said Vanhove.

“We are designed to have fewer programs that make up Greek Life at SDSU, and we need to develop them more,” said Nick Wendell, assistant director for student activities.

Each fraternity and sorority has its own president, vice president, secretary, recruitment/rush chair, philanthropy chair and social chair, etc.

Each fraternity and sorority has a representative on the IFC or PHC. When either board wants to set up a Greek community-wide philanthropy event or social, these boards set it up.

“Try to relate it to American government; each chapter is a ‘state’ with a representative to the ‘Congress’ (IFC or PHC),” said Vanhove. “If anything needs to change, such as amendments to the constitution or bylaws, it has to go through the board, be approved by the chapters and then voted upon during each board’s meeting. There is no ‘Obama,’ but with this new change, there will be two presidents working together for the good of the whole Greek Community.”

These programs are designed to bring the chapters together and to learn what each chapter is doing. By redesigning these programs, they will strengthen the current structures of the programs.

“IFC had six chairs, and multiple tasks will be consolidated to the four chairs. There were certain executive chairs that really didn’t do much, so hopefully, by using only four positions on the board, maximum efficiency can be reached,” said Vanhove.

This spring, the chapters will celebrate the 34th Volstorff Walder Awards, which award excellence in the Greek system.

“We want to focus on specific events and make them really strong to help our community come together, said Wendell.

Greek Life at SDSU promotes leadership, campus involvement, community service, academic achievement and social development. Greek Life now contains nine national/international organizations that provide different opportunities for SDSU students. Some of these opportunities include training, guidance, friendship and inspiration to the campus and community.

March 30 through April 2 also kicked off Greek Week. Events that took place included a canned food drive, penny wars and a Greek god and goddess pageant. Typically during the year there are speakers and workshops.

I realized the other day that all year I have written my fashion column based on women’s clothing, and I decided I would offer something for my many guy friends. I hope you enjoy it.

Right: EL Rey Blacklite Special

Why?: I am very jealous of anyone who can pull off shorts and tennis shoes together and have them look stylish. I spotted the PUMA EL Rey Blacklite Special shoe on my friend Kirby Morsching about a week ago. If you are looking for a comfortable pair of shoes to go with shorts or jeans, you should definitely check these out. I would even wear them if I could find them in women’s sizes!

“I bought the shoes about three years ago in Bellingham, Washington, for about $5 because they were on a clearance rack,” said Morsching, a senior broadcast journalism major. “I liked their look and how simple they were. They are probably the most comfortable pair of shoes I own; I suggest everyone owns a pair!”

Wrong: Cut offs

Right: Men’s shorts

Why?: Hollywood says men should pair a lightweight knit, cardigan or hoodie two sizes bigger than what you would normally wear with a pair of shorts. These shorts are supposed to hit at the knee and higher. I do not agree with this trend, and I just think it looks awkward. I think men should stick with their shorts at the length at about the knee or a little longer. I especially think a tan short with a nice polo looks stylish. Want to impress even more? Try on a pair of plaid shorts and pair it with a basic neutral shirt in a color you find in the shorts. I have on occasion been found to make my friends change into them because I like the look of them so much. The plaid shorts give you a little style but are still basic and comfy.

“I like to wear shorts because they can be comfy and formal at the same time. Too bad it isn’t warm enough to wear them year round! I like finding them on sale, but my favorite place to buy them from is Aeropostale,” said Jordan Schettler, a senior nursing major.

Why?:

Fashion may not be my major (although I am starting to think it should be), but it is definitely one of my top interests. The last time I predicted spring to be right around the corner, we received more snow, so I will not do that again. I hope you thoroughly enjoy my column this week, inspired simply by some of my best friends as well as TLC’s What Not to Wear.

Wrong: Ponytail

Right: The Bump/Pouf

Why: I like to call this hairstyle the bump because you are basically taking a small part of the front of your hair, twisting it so it creates a “bump” and securing it with bobby pins and hair spray. A lot of times, I mostly just use my bangs. I have seen celebrities like Jennifer Lopez with this hairstyle, and she always wears it with soft waves. I think it looks best with some soft waves but can be worn with just straight hair as well.

“I like the bump/pouf because it works with all types of hair. It doesn’t matter if it’s long, short, straight or curly,” said Megann Davis, a senior advertising major.

Wrong: Short Shorts

Right: Walking Shorts

Why: Stacy and Clinton from TLC’s What Not to Wear love when women come in and can’t seem to get away from short shorts. The reason? They show way too much skin, making women look much older than they really are. The fix: a neutral (brown, tan, blue) walking short. It creates a longer line for the eye to follow, making you look much taller and also looking much more your age!

There is a silent killer among South Dakotans: heart disease-the number one cause of death for South Dakota men and women.

In response to this, Gov. Mike Rounds declared February as American Heart Month for the state, with February being chosen due to the association with hearts and Valentine’s Day.

“All South Dakotans need to know their personal risk for heart disease,” said Rounds in a press release. “Everyone needs to know the warning signs of heart attack and stroke. Individuals can also help save lives by calling 911 if symptoms occur and becoming trained in CPR.”

To help students learn more about cardiovascular disease, the Wellness Center is hosting Wellness Wednesdays, which will be offered in the Wellness Center and will discuss a variety of topics for the rest of the semester. Heart Month is the first topic of Wellness Wednesday.

In the lobby of the Wellness Center, there will be health-related booths set up for students. Students can go to each station to check their heart health and other health aspects.

At one booth, nursing students will take blood pressure and glucose readings. They can tell students where their levels should or should not be. Good blood pressure levels are 120 or less and 80 or less.

Students may also meet with a dietician at a booth to discuss healthy eating and their glucose readings. For students who would like to talk to a dietician about healthy lifestyles any other time, free appointments can be made by calling Student Health Clinic and Counseling Services at (605) 688-4157.

“We just want to promote eating healthy for the heart to decrease the chance of getting heart disease,” said Jessica Remington, SDSU dietitian. “I am more than willing to help students who would like me to put together foods students should have. Some prefer a calorie list, some would like more of a schedule, and we can do that and adjust to each student.”

To exercise heart health, students should remember to eat healthy even when eating on campus. Some of the healthier choices to pick from are grilled meats instead of fried meats, foods with less fats and no added sodium, whole grain breads, fruits and vegetables. Students should also watch portion sizes.

Students should start slow. Rather than having French fries, have a side salad or a baked potato. Choosing marinara instead of alfredo sauce is also a healthy choice. Students may look online at Campus Dish, www.campusdish.com, for nutrition facts about all foods offered every day on campus.

Counselors are also available at Wellness Wednesdays to discuss heart-healthy relationships.

“We are doing the relationships because we thought, along with having a healthy heart, healthy relationships were right along with living a healthy lifestyle,” said Dallas Caylor, SDSU counseling intern.

There is even a massage therapist for relaxation and stress management.

“We use massages to motivate students to have a healthy heart,” said Melissa McCutcheon, Brookings Chiropractic massage therapist.

Students can make lifestyle changes to help reduce their risk of heart disease, too. Some of these changes include controlling weight, increasing physical activity, decreasing alcohol intake, restricting sodium consumption and putting an emphasis on eating fresh fruits, vegetables and low-fat dairy products.

Guidelines now encourage all women to reduce saturated fats intake to less than seven percent of calories if at all possible.

Nutrition is the scheduled topic for the first Wellness Wednesday in March. More information will be in the Wellness Center and the Union for future topics.

Hey, it’s time for another list of Em’s fashion findings. Please remember I am only a columnist and you may not agree with what I am saying is fashionable in my column, but I make this list up from what I like to wear or what I see around campus. Please don’t take offense if you don’t agree with what I find fashionable. I change my mind so often that some of these things may be out of style on me in a week. As always, make your own fashion. It is just more fun that way!

Wrong: Denim Jackets

Right: Vests

Why? My manager wears them at Applebee’s, I’ve spotted them on my Juice editor, Laura Lucas, and I’ve spotted them on many people around campus, including myself. They add a little bit of creativeness to your wardrobe. You can dress them up and wear them over a nice shirt with black pants, or dress them down and wear them with jeans. “Denim jackets just seem wrong in so many ways,” said Ericka Syhre, a senior apparel merchandising student. “I made the mistake of wearing one in my senior picture and will forever be disturbed by this memory. Plus, there’s always that worry of accidentally wearing a Canadian tuxedo (a suit made entirely of denim).”

Why? I love thick-rimmed glasses. Usually you see them in either black or brown. They accent people’s faces nicely, and if you choose the right shade, they pair nicely with your skin and eye color.

The Nepalese Student Association (NeSA) at SDSU is hosting the third annual Nepal Nite in the Volstorff Ballroom on Feb. 22 from 6 to 9 p.m.

“We are hosting Nepal Nite to (share) our culture, traditions and foods with our guests,” said David Karki, a graduate student from Nepal and the current president of the International Relations Club (IRC).

First guests will be served different varieties of food followed by various entertainment programs.

Eight items of food, as well as songs, dances, a factual presentation and drama come with the $6 ticket price. Non-student adults and children ages 6 to 10 will pay $10 and $3, respectively.

As in the past, the highlight of the event will be the fashion show, which showcases different dresses from Nepal. Men typically wear Daura Suruwal, while women wear a sari.

The NeSA is expecting about 450 guests.

“We want to present the overall picture of Nepal so that more people can get the chance to know a little about it. So many people, when I say I am from Nepal, ask where that even is. Here is their chance to get to see a little about Nepal,” said Dij Joshi, secretary of NeSA.

Tickets can be purchased at the Multicultural Center located in the lower level of The Union. Students can also call the center at 688-5585 or contact Bikas Basnet at 651-1514.

The African Students Association at SDSU is hosting Africa Nite in the Volstorff Ballroom on Feb. 15 from 6 to 9 p.m.

“We hope the night will change people’s view of Africa. We want them to know it is a small continent with the most natural resources,” said Derrick Okine, ASA president.

First, event participants will be served traditional dishes found in Kenya (kachumbari, chapatti, pilau and stew), Uganda (posho and cabbage salad), Ethiopia (special lintel soup), Zimbabwe (spinach with cream), Cameroon (roast beef), Nigeria (Jollof rice) and Ghana (waakye and beef stew), along with fruit cocktail and a sweet potato dessert.

A PowerPoint presentation will be given to show the rich and diverse cultural heritage and mineral resources. There will also be a performance by a group of African student dancers along with a parade of nations represented at SDSU and a fashion show of traditional African dress.

The ASA is expecting about 400 guests from South Dakota and will represent Africa’s true culture, music and cuisine.

“We hope this involvement will bring African unity,” said Okine. “We want people to know more about Africa and what they can get from the continent. This is a one stop shop for anyone interested in African culture, customs and traditions.”

Tickets can be obtained from the Information Exchange at The Union and from Liza at the SDSU Multicultural Center. The prices are $8 for adults, $5 for students and $3 for children ages 4 to 10 years.

The SDSU Writing Center is hosting a writing competition during International Writing Center Week, Feb. 8 through 13.

Interested students should submit an original limerick, haiku, poem, anecdote or narrative (fictional or non-fictional) of fewer than 50 words to the Writing Center. The winner will be published in The Collegian.

The Writing Center will host a reception to honor the winner and honorable mentions between 3 and 5 p.m. on Feb. 11.

Submissions are due by Friday, Feb. 6 at 5 p.m. at the Writing Center located in Wintrode Student Success Center Room 201.

“We hope students will have fun and [have] the opportunity to visit the Writing Center,” said Nicole Biever, one of the many people working on the contest. “We keep busy all the time during the year, but [it] seems only a few students hear about us. We want to help as many students as we can.”

Hey! I am Emily, but I mainly go by Em, and I will be doing fashion articles.

I know you may see me around campus many times and probably ask yourself how I know anything about fashion.

Alas, I know more about fashion than you may think. Even though I don’t agree with some of it because my sweats are definitely my favorite fashion accessory, my fashion findings still are right to say that leggings do look better.

I hope you enjoy some of my findings inspired by this month’s Cosmopolitan!

Wrong: Oversized bags

Right: Clutch

Why? Oversized bags supposedly are out because they make your tummy area look much bigger than it really is. In other words, they add emphasis exactly where you don’t want added pounds: your stomach. I had an oversized bag because I could fit everything I needed into it, including the bathroom mirror. I have so much stuff that a clutch just would not work for me. Decide for yourself: do you want to be in and carry a clutch or would you like to be “out” and be like me and carry an oversized bag?

Wrong: Lipo

Right: Eating Healthy/Working out

Why? Why does Hollywood think that every year the way to remove fat is through surgery. Here’s a fancy idea: how about if you want to lose a few inches, you get off your butt and go work out and eat a healthy diet. I know that in SOME cases Lipo may be needed, but in most cases, it is NOT.

Wrong: Sweat pants

Right: Leggings

Why? Not going to lie: I don’t know who decided that mini skirts should be worn with leggings. I do agree on some people they look very cute but not on me. Sweat pants will always be one of my fashion staples. I am like the Queen of Sweat Pants at SDSU.

Wrong: Bulky Necklaces

Right: Brooches

Why? First Lady, Michelle Obama, helped make brooches a huge fashion icon seen all over. She takes a very simple, elegant dress but then dresses it up with a brooch necklace or just one big brooch.

Wrong: Animal Print

Right: Argyle

Why? Argyle used to be seen only as an older-style print, but it has come into being a younger print. I love this pattern! It adds a little bit of print and helps you create a little bit of style.

Wrong: Straight Leg Jeans

Right: Boyfriend Jeans

Why? These jeans were first spotted on Katie Holmes, but I am not really sure how they became fashion. Since all you are doing is dotting your boyfriends’ jeans, they obviously aren’t going to flatter you in any shape or form. My suggestion: stick with the straight leg jeans. They will make your legs look longer and leaner. Also, always remember to wear your jeans about an inch off the ground.This insures they will be long enough and will make your legs look a mile long.
