Last week’s top-grossing film, Sin City, is a collection of interwoven tales taken from the graphic novels by the same name. The brainchild of Frank Miller (who authored the graphic novels) and directed by Robert Rodrigez, Sin City is a visual thrill.

Using shocking imagery, splashes of color and noir-esque lighting, this dark, bleak film left me thinking, “What the…?”

The Good Stuff:

Aside from the fact that it was initially difficult to grasp any type of narrative thread, the film remained intensely compelling. Due to the stark black and white frames punctuated with vivid colors and artistic special effects, the film became visually engrossing. Even when I was horrified by what I saw I found it difficult to look away.

Althought the events of the film are highly graphic and violent, the stylized nature of the film made the gory elements less upsetting.

The various tales in the film were woven together out of sequence, but I was happy to be able to discern a timeline with some thought.

I have a weakness for tough guys and I really enjoyed all of the acting – not to mention the hot actors.

Those who enjoy the female form will be excited that the movie is full of T and A. If you’re a fan of Jessica Alba, don’t get too excited, you only get to see her A.

The Bad Stuff:

Although many will enjoy the nudity, I was offended by the objectification of women throughout the film. I also had a hard time dealing with the human castration, prostitution and cannibalism.

The bleak and twisted way that these film makers dealt with the human condition was startling and upsetting for me. I must admit, I like happy endings and this movie didn’t really end and it wasn’t really happy.

	three out of five stars

Some of us need a little help in the health area. I’ve got some tips for you-I mean us. Okay, I mean me.

The human body likes to be on a schedule. Going to bed and getting out of bed at the same time every day is a good way to make your body happier.

Eating meals at the same time every day is important too. It will cut down on indigestion and my even help you stay slim.

Some doctors even suggest that eating more meals throughout the day can help you stay energized and lose weight. As long as you keep your portions small, five to seven meals per day may be the way to go.

Almost everyone in America should drink more water too. Around eight eight-ounce glasses of water per day will help your body metabolize fat, your skin to be healthier and can help you sleep better at night.

Exercise is a daunting idea for some of us, but taking time to work out for 20 to 30 minutes, three times a week can have numerous benefits.

Smaller waistlines, more energy, a cheerier disposition and better sleep at night might make it worth your while to get off your duff and work out.

Now that we actually have some sunshine in our part of the country you might want to get outside and catch some rays.

Studies show that getting more sunshine can help combat depression and get your skin glowing.

Spending 15 minutes per day outdoors can help your body properly use vitamins and mineral, including vitamin E, which can make your skin glow even if you don’t get a tan.

Those who spend a lot of time in front of a computer or staring at small type might need a little help for their eyes.

The Meet Market

Every weekend college students and young adults dress up and head out for the evening. Whether they head downtown or to private parties, a lot of folks are out on the town Thursday through Saturday night.

Why do they go? Are they all looking for love? Or are they looking for the “hook up?”

This past Friday the Collegian went out on the town to find out the answers to these questions and more. We administered a highly unscientific and very sassy survey about sex and relationships.

We managed to catch 10 men and 10 women who were willing to discuss their sexploits with a total stranger. Of course they wouldn’t tell us their names. But we found out some other interesting facts.

None of the people we surveyed admitted to looking for someone to hook up with. Yet the majority of those surveyed had actually had a one-night stand with someone they had met in a bar or at a party.

One man said he wouldn’t go to the bar looking for a girlfriend, “No way,” he said, “what kind of a girl do you meet at a bar?”

Right now the majority of women are thinking, “What kind of man do you meet at a bar?” Well, we found men with a rather wide range of experience. We even spoke to a few homosexual men who said that for them the hardest part about dating in Brookings is “just not knowing who else is gay.”

One of the gay men said, “If I see someone I’m interested in I have to assume they’re straight, so it’s hard to meet and get to know possible boyfriends.”

All but one of the men we spoke to admitted to having a one-night stand. Most of the men even said that they would do it again. Plus, the one man who had yet to engage in a one-night stand said that he probably would, if given an opportune situation.

One of the men, a 26-year old graduate student, said he wouldn’t have another one-night stand.

“That’s not how I see sex. I have to have an emotional or intellectual connection with a woman,” he said.

The grad student added, “I wish women knew that sometimes going for the nice guy is a good thing. A**holes stay a**holes and nice guys shouldn’t finish last.”

Besides our grad student, the majority of men involved with our survey were also okay with the idea of engaging in casual sex. A few of the men who don’t have casual sex said they would if they didn’t have girlfriends.

But the double-standard lives on.

Although the majority of men surveyed said they have and would continue to have one-night stands, a large percentage also said they wouldn’t have a relationship with a girl who would have a one-night stand.

The ladies represented a broader range of experiences, simply because we met a virgin while we were out. This 22-year-old woman did think she might have a one-night stand under certain circumstances and she said she would feel okay about engaging in heavy petting with someone on a first date.

Most of the women we spoke to were more conservative, but we met a 23-year-old SDSU graduate who admitted to having sex in some risky places on campus.

“I had sex in the library, that was the most fun. But also, you know, dorm rooms and McCrory Gardens. Oh, and the track by the library, what is it called? Sexhauer Field.” Then the exhibitionist laughed at her pun and added, “That was fun too.”

In general the women we spoke to had had sex with fewer partners than the men we spoke to, and the women told us they were less willing to engage in casual sex or one-night-stands.

There are some things that women wish men knew about women, and some relationship and sex issues they wish men were more serious about. One married 23-year-old woman told us that she would rather men didn’t want to do so many “weird things” in the bedroom, but wouldn’t elaborate further on what a “weird thing” consisted of.

The bride did tell us that she wished men could find “the spot” without direction, and commented that her own husband is getting better and better at it.

“Men are always so worried about quantity,” the bride complained. “I hate that. How about concentrating on quality for a change? I’d rather have it really good once than do it six times crappy.”

About Sex On Campus

If you live on campus and you want to have sex, it’s safest to find a discreet place to do it. Around 3 a.m. Good Friday morning, however, a pair decided to give it a whirl on one of the Ping-Pong tables in Larson Commons.

Unfortunately, the ping-pong table wasn’t too private and their picture was taken.

Freshman Adam Quail had a camera on hand and he snapped the shot.

Quail’s friend Terrel Backes, also a freshman, made use of the photo and printed up about 40 posters as well as posting a link to the photo on his Web site.

The posters were posted and soon taken down. The students assumed that the posters were taken down by Larson Complex Director Troy Alfson. Alfson, however, was unable to comment.

“The incident is under investigation right now so I’m not able to comment,” Alfson said.

This incident has stirred up quite a bit of controversy and revealed the attitudes of some students about sex and sexuality.

Matt Kurtz, a freshman mechanical engineering major from Garretson, said, “I just can’t believe someone had enough balls to do it on a Ping-Pong table. I guess since they did it they deserve to have their picture up.”

Kurtz also said that he’d probably never do such a thing because it was “too risky.”

Freshman Laura Bly, also from Garretson, had a different reaction.

“It was really stupid. It shouldn’t have been posted,” Bly said. “I’d be really mad if I was that girl, but I’d never be put in that situation.”

Although Bly didn’t actually see the poster she said, “Everyone knows about it. I keep hearing people talking about it.”

 Not Everbody’s Doin It

Brookings Wesleyan Church recently finished a series of lessons about sex and relationships that stressed abstinence before marriage as a healthy and Biblical lifestyle.

Randy and Stacey Hanson of Brookings taught the class, based on the book Song of Solomon from the Bible, on Sunday mornings. Randy said the class was about the Biblical way of viewing dating relationships and marriage.

“The Biblical view of sex is that it was designed by God to be enjoyed by one man and one woman within a monogamous marriage relationship,” Randy said.

“Within His (God’s) framework it’s a beautiful thing.”

Randy hopes that college students won’t buy into the idea that you should do whatever feels good. “In the end,” he said, “It will leave you empty and disappointed and ultimately used and cheapened.”

Stacey agreed with her husband and stressed how beautiful it is to save yourself for marriage.

“Even if you’ve already had sex you can ask for forgiveness,” Stacey said. “God is forgiving and you can start over.”

Two of the Hanson’s students from the class, sophomore mechanical engineering major Dustin Bakker and sophomore nursing major Jillian Boelter, have been dating for about a year and a half. The two are waiting until they are married to have sex.

Both Bakker and Boelter thought that the Song of Solomon class was informative and helpful.

“We talked about the way a man should treat a woman,” Boelter said. “I think in today’s society we tend to lower our standards of how a woman should be treated and respected.”

Bakker agreed. “A man should take responsibility for keeping the dating relationship pure.”

Purity isn’t an easy standard, Bakker and Boelter said, but they believe it is worth it.

“It takes the effort of both people, otherwise there will be pressure,” Bakker said.

“If you obey, God will bless,” Boelter said.

“It’s a daily battle,” Bakker said. “The fact that we know we’re going to be married and were so in love – that’s why it takes two people. I’ll be strong one day and she’ll be strong at another time.”

Both said they know that it will be better if they wait and that they are thankful for their partnership in purity.

“Every single day I thank her for who she is,” Bakker said. “I can count on her to be faithful.”

Bakker and Boetler encouraged women to “guard their hearts” and “wait for the special person God has for you.”

For those who haven’t waited for marriage, Bakker said, “God can restore anything that a man (or woman) has taken away from you.”

Boetler said to think of your sexuality as a “gift to give to your future spouse.”

Heart disease is now one of the number-one killers of Americans and with the fast-paced yet sedentary lifestyle of the current “technological age,” many are finding it harder and harder to eat right.

That may be why the FDA recently released new food pyramid guides and why it recommends people take a multivitamin to supplement their diets. Many health insurers have also begun to include supplementation in their coverage.

The high numbers of obesity in our nation also point to the fact that many are either unable to or unwilling to exercise.

Perhaps your lifestyle isn’t sedentary, or perhaps you just find it difficult to make time for all the things you should do to keep your body fit and healthy. Whether it’s because of your work or your play you may need to look into ways to supplement your lifestyle

If You’re the Average Joe…

… you probably don’t get quite enough exercise and don’t eat as healthfully as you should.

To boost your health levels you may need to get your body on a schedule. If you get enough sleep, wake up, go to bed and eat at the same times every day your body will thank you.

Senior dietetics major Karie Mitchell says, “Everybody should drink more water and it’s actually good for you to get a little bit of sun every day.”

Getting 15 minutes of sun each day will help the body convert and distribute vitamin D and can even combat depression.

People looking into dietary supplements should know that supplements are not regulated by the FDA and therefore it is important to consult a physician before implementing a plan. Don’t go to just anybody though.

Mitchell warns that most general practitioners have almost no training in clinical nutrition so you should seek help from a registered dietitian. Dr. Erica Layton is a chiropractor with a Masters of Science in biochemistry and she agrees whole heartedly with Mitchell.

“You want to find someone with a Masters in nutrition, a registered dietician or a sports medicine doctor who is well versed in nutrition for athletes,” Layton says

“If you are planning on starting with supplements the first step is to be tested,” she says. “Although there are recommended doses on the bottles it is important to remember that everyone is different and vitamin needs vary greatly from one person to another.”

According to The Prescription for Natural Healing, the “Average Joe” should probably start with a multivitamin and a multimineral before incorporating other vitamin supplements into a diet because there is a cooperative action that goes on between certain vitamins and minerals.

Layton also recommends omega three fatty acids for almost everyone.

“Because of the diets we Americans have I would recommend that most people supplement with Omega 3 ,” Layton says. “And stay away from anything with Omega 6.”

Mitchell and Layton both warn against taking chemically produced supplements because it is hard to tell how the body will break them down and in many cases they are undigestable.

Whole food supplements are the best but they are also expensive. But Layton says, “you get what you pay for.”

If You’re

the All American…

… and you exercise at least an hour each day, you have some special needs. For example, you need a lot of calories.

Layton recommends an athlete take whey protein and extra antioxidants like vitamins A, C, E and selenium and chromium. Extra antioxidants can prevent injury and help the body heal more quickly.

“A little extra iron can be important too,” Layton says. “Especially if they are in a high impact sport like football, because they will have a lot of breakdown of red blood cells.”

Layton also has all athletes under her care supplement their diets with an anti inflammatory like Omega 3 fatty acids. Other anti inflammatories include Green tea extract and flax.

Athletes may also want to look into using a B complex supplement to help with physical and mental stress. And of course it is very important for athletes to stay hydrated. The best way to do this is to avoid carbonated and caffinated beverages and to drink plenty of water and other drinks that containing electrolytes.

If You’re a Couch Potato…

… and your thumbs have become the strongest muscles in your body from the hours you spend channel surfing and video-gaming, there are some supplements you should look into.

Your big need is to eat less and make good use of all the food you eat, which means keep the snack food out of reach. Junior dietetics major Julie Elgersma says, “Couch potatoes need to watch the amount of calories they eat because their metabolism is slow.”

Coconut oil can help speed up your metabolism and recent studies suggest it may be one of the healthiest ways to fry food. Keep in mind that it is a fat and the average person should only ingest about one or two tablespoons per day.

Elgersma also urges couch potatoes to eat a lot of fruits and veggies instead of the standard snacks. Certain fruits like pineapple and papaya can help aid in digestion because they contain high levels of natural enzymes.

Supplemental enzymes might be a good idea for the as well because they will help fully break down food to ensure that your body makes the most of what it gets.

“Also avoid food with too much fat because it won’t nourish you so you’ll end up eating more and just ingesting a lot of empty calories,” Elgersma says. “I’d recommend whole wheat and less processed food. Organic is probably the best if you can get it. The more natural the better.” That goes for everyone.

For the couch potato health educator Ellie Trautman says that it is important to get in some aerobic activity three times a week.

“Try walking to class instead of driving,” Trautman says. “Or just park further away from class and walk across campus.”

If You’re a Weekend Warrior…

… and you take it easy working or studying all week just so that you can play hard all weekend, you probably wreak havoc on your joints and your muscles.

You might want to consider adding a little more action to your weekly routine so that you can avoid injuries. It can be especially beneficial to stretch throughout the week and before and after your periods of high activity.

Supplementing with milkthistle cleanses the liver and the body’s tissues. This can flush toxins through your system including the extra lactic acid that can build up after periods of extreme activity.

You should look into most of the supplements that the All-American takes. And Layton suggests an anti-inflammatory diet.

“Most people don’t want to hear it, but that means no sugar, milk, grains, soy, or corn and really go high on the protein.”

If You’re a Book Worm…

… watch out, you eyes, your brains and your joints might be suffering some major damage.

If you’ve been squinting from reading all day you’ll want to amp up your vitamin A, but be careful, Layton warns, because Vitamin A is a fat-soluble vitamin so if you take too much you run the risk of toxicity.

Taking regular breaks to get up for a few minutes every hour and do a few stretches. Optometrists also recommend looking away from your work for a few minutes every hour. These breaks should also ramp up your brain power by getting the blood flowing throughout your body and your cranium.

Ginkgo Biloba is a popular herb that can help circulate oxygen, facilitate blood flow and help with brain functions. Careful, all herbs have toxicity values. Studies have shown that B complexes increase nerve activity and promote nervous system health, which means good stuff for your brain.

If You’re a Party Animal…

… who likes to go out and paint the town at least twice a week, you are probably exposing yourself to a lot of smoky environments and drinking and eating unhealthy foods.

Partiers need to keep in mind that their body wants to be on a schedule and staying out all night messes with that schedule. Also, party foods can be high in fat, processed flour and sugar. Be careful that these foods don’t become the majority of your diet.

“As soon as we’re born everything we put into our bodies has an effect on us,” Layton says. “I see too many 30 and 40 year olds that wish they would have known better when they were young.”

Also, for anyone who smokes or is exposed to smoke-filled environments for a long period of time, Layton says, “Vitamin C is a must” a well as extra B vitamins

“There is a lot of research about B vitamins helping hangovers,” she says. “B-6 is a diuretic and it helps flush toxins out of the body’s system and remember, alcohol is a toxin. Enzymes are also good for removing alcohol from the system.”

Starring Keanu Reeves, from the Matrix, and Rachel Weisz, from the Mummy, Constantine is not only a great melding of the two talents, but also a great marriage of the feel of both the Matrix and Mummy movies. The film evokes all of the dark angst and underlying struggles of the Matrix and at the same time touches all of the myth and mystery of the Mummy.

There’s also a gritty, smoky texture to this film that is tempered nicely by the movie’s use of water as a conduit. That’s definitely a nice choice considering the subject matter: spiritual warfare. While this type of battle is definitely not a new idea, new light is shed on the possibilities of such a fight by the film.

The Story

John Constantine can see the things of the spirit world that others can’t.

This puts him in a very interesting position as well as a really bad mood.

The chain-smoking spiritual channel has earned himself a trip to hell after he dies, which he is trying to avoid. He uses his gift of sight to try to get back into God’s good graces by vanquishing demons and other such stuff. Unfortunately, for him it isn’t working too well. John is accompanied by a few fun and quirky pals on his quest including: an exorcist in training who serves as chauffeur; a bug loving gadget geek who prepares and procures supernatural weapons for John; an otherworldly bartender; and a priest who can hear the few things John can’t see.

Even though this tale is already a bit twisted, there’s also a girl included.

Detective Angela Dodson is that twist. She wants John’s help to solve a case. Of course she becomes integral to the bigger picture.

The Pros

The special effects and imagery of the film are awesome to say that least.

Plus, if the idea of God and the devil fighting over humans is creepy to you and you want to get creeped out a little this is your show. All of the characters add nice elements to the tale and the whole story isn’t as far-fetched as you might think. Plus, I loved the fact that, although there were some unBiblical parts added to the whole God against Satan conflict, the basic Christian doctrine about humans entering heaven and hell wasn’t altered. The ideas of repentance, belief and absolution are very close to what my pastor, or a priest, might tell you.

The Cons

While basic Christianity isn’t messed with, a lot of other religious ideas are tweaked quite a bit. For example, the idea that there is a different Bible in hell and that it holds more information than the earthly tome.

Furthermore, many may not like the idea that John could be God’s instrument and still be such a cranky person.

The Bottom Line

I liked it quite a lot. The visual impact of the film is intense and the subject is emotional in a way that many people can relate to. The film did a good job of integrating truthful elements of belief into their fictional plot. Plus I applaud all of the supporting characters who were very well played, with an extra bravo to Gabriel, played by Tilda Swinton, and Balthazar, played by Gavin Rossdale. I predict a sequel and, personally, I’d love to see it.

Four and a half out of five stars

Oasis, a new ministry for college students in the Brookings area, offers a time and place for students to spiritually connect and unwind.

Sunday nights at 8 p.m. the service is held at Brookings Wesleyan Church’s (BWC) Fellowship Hall. To prepare for the service each week the hall is decorated with candles, soft lighting, fabric tablecloths and draperies to create a peaceful homey mood. In fact, early comers can even snag seats on a few couches in the hall. Students who attend the service describe it as comfy and peaceful.

The man behind the scenes of Oasis, Rick Wipf, BWC’s college pastor, says, “Oasis is basically designed to be a place of rest, renewal and refreshment. You can come after a busy week and rest in god’s presence.”

The service consists of prayer and worship as well as a short devotional. Wipf describes the service as a blend of church styles.

“We have a lot of contemporary stuff but we also include hymns and choruses,” Wipf says.

The service also incorporates creeds and serves communion once a month.

“I would call it a next-gen type of service,” Wipf says.

The first Oasis service was help Jan. 23, but Wipf says the idea for the service has been in the works for a long time.

“The first time I had the idea was last May,” he says. “I was feeling like we needed to expand our college services.”

Over the summer others started to “catch the vision” for Wipf’s idea. Much of the eight months of planning was spent in prayer. Wipf was also concerned about finding talented and spiritually strong band members.

“So much of Oasis is singing and worship so they [the band] had to be good,” Wipf says. “It was a lot easier to find the band than I thought it would be.”

The major element of the service, the devotionals, required quite a bit of thought as well. The topics of the devotionals are meant to personally apply the messages BWC covers in their Sunday Morning Services. The devotionals are also connected to the Oasis prayer time.

“It’s kind of like here’s some stuff to think about and pray about,” Wipf says.

Evan Delaney, an integral part of Oasis’ “talented” band, is freshman music major from Brookings.

“As worship leader, I organize the music and prayer time and I decide who plays and sings when,” Delaney says.

Delaney’s goal for the music is to help people to establish a worshipful connection with God.

“Oasis services are about an hour-long gathering, to just help people release some of the tensions of the day or week relating to school, work relationships, and just basically whatever can build up bog down the mind,” Delaney says. “It is meant to rebuild and refresh.”

The worship group is comprised of college age individuals from all of the out reach groups on campus including, Navigators, Campus Crusade and InterVarsity.

Michelle Westerbur, a junior parks management major from Ihlen, Minn., says she likes the worship but not just because of the band.

“Even though the band does a fantastic job,” Westerbur says. ‘I like the mix of prayer and worship that makes for a really restful environment.”

Westerbur uses Oasis as a escape from the difficulties of college life.

“If you’re really overloaded,” she says, “it’s a good retreat and a good place to drop your burdens and meet with God.”

For Paisley Stewart, a sophomore early childhood education major from Brookings, Oasis is an encouragement.

“The atmosphere is a really laid back a peaceful setting,” Stewart says. “You are able to worship the way you want to whether that’s sitting and bowing or if you want to stand up and raise your hands. Oasis is a good time to concentrate and focus on God.”

You sit, hour after hour. Slouching over your books and hunched toiling over the computer. So you’re a diligent student … okay, maybe you’re an avid video-gamer.

Either way, if you write, watch TV, or type at a computer for more than an hour at a time it is very likely that you slouch while you’re doing it. That means you could be seriously hurting your back and shoulder muscles.

Slouching, which is for the most part inevitable when seated for over 20 minutes, can cause tightness in certain areas and atrophy in others.

While proper posture is difficult to maintain, chiropractor Ericka Dickinson recommends students always avoid crossing their legs.

Dickinson and other chiropractors recommend students take a break once an hour and stretch one or more body parts. When stretching it is important to hold each stretch for 30-60 seconds. Be sure not to bounce or jerk while stretching.

It isn’t only good for your body to take a 3-10 minute break each hour. Breaks can help your brain restart and file information away as well.

If your shoulders are suffering the aches and pains of study time…

At left, junior advertising major Amber Hoxeng demonstrates a good stretch for the lower pectorals and the muscles that wrap around ribs. Stretch all muscles gently at first so that you don’t over extend any body parts.

Below, senior business econ major Brady Jacobsen models the same stretch on the opposite side of the body. Remember, it is important to stretch both sides of the body equally.

Amber stretches her upper pectorals and her deltoid (upper shoulder) muscles in the photo at right. In this stretch it is important to try to keep your elbows and shoulders even with each other, making your upper arm parrallel to the floor.

At far right, Brady demonstrates a stretch that affects the trapeizous (shoulder muscle connected to the neck muscles) and upper back muscles. This stretch is most effective if the arm across the body is kept straight.

Hips and lower back sore from sitting too long…

You can stretch out your hips and lower back by sitting in the butterfly position and gently pushing your legs down with your elbows as Amber demonstrates at right.

The tiger stretch might be the best thing you can do for your back, shoulders and hips. Start on your knees as Amber is in the top picture at right. Curve your back and bend your head down so that you are looking at your knees. Hold this position for at least 30 seconds.

Then arch your back in the opposite direction, as Amber demonstrates in the lower right picture. Be sure to look up at the ceiling. Hold this position for at least 30 seconds as well.

If you have a pain in your neck…

You can do a simple stretch to save your neck. Lean your head to one side and then lightly place your hand on your head.

Don’t pull your head down with your hand, but let the weight of your hand ease your head down and gently stretch the sore muscles.

Repeat on the opposite side as Brady does in the picture below

For your writer’s cramp…

Whether you’ve been typing or writing stretching your wrists is important to avoid long-term damage. Stretch each wrist in both directions.

Amber stretches her upper pectoral, forearm and wrist here. Place your hand backwards on a wall and turn you body away until you feel a small amount of tension.

So the day is almost upon us again, Valentine’s Day. For many it is a great day to celebrate the love you have. Or even celebrate a love that you hope to one day have.

For others it is a day of dread because it means picking out a gift for their significant other. This particular task wouldn’t be too bad, unless your loving other has been hinting that candy, roses, jewelry and stuffed animals are not their things.

If that’s the case you’ll have to figure out something else. If you are one of the people for whom candy and flowers just won’t cut it, or if you misguidedly think these old stand-bys are a good idea, we have help for you.

After doing a bit of research the Juice has discovered that such antiquated presents only work in special cases.

Stuffed Animal Alternatives

Kirsten Beesch, a sophomore apparel merchandising major from Marshall, Minn., told the Juice about one of her worst Valentine’s Day presents.

“I got this giant stuffed animal,” Beesch says. “It was really ugly and I had to pretend I liked it. It looked like one you win at the fair.”

Beesch says the ‘fair bear’ was a bad gift because it made her feel like her boyfriend didn’t even know her.

“I mean if I had stuffed animals all over my room and it was obvious that I loved them that would be one thing,” Beesch says, “but I don’t and a guy I’m dating should know that.”

Beesch says she thinks good presents don’t come from “Wal-Mart,” but rather from a man’s imagination and his own two hands.

“I think a great present would be something like a handmade card. Just to picture a guy cutting it all out and imagining what he’s thinking about while he makes it. That’s so sweet,” she says.

Beesch also has a friend with some plans that she finds very sweet.

“I know someone who’s going to propose to his girlfriend on Valentine’s Day and we’re decorating the room with lights and flowers,” she says. “He’s writing her a poem and that is a really sweet idea for a guy to do for a girl. Even if the poem sucks at least they tried and it’s personal.”

Beesch says a person doesn’t even have to be a poet to make a good gift out of poetry.

“Even find a poem that reminds you of your boyfriend or girlfriend and read it to them, that’s really sweet too.”

In Beesch’s opinion flowers are good when you aren’t expecting them. So that probably leaves Valentine’s Day out. But she also says, “You have to know what kind of flowers to give a girl – not everyone wants red roses.”

Samantha Burns, a freshman general education major from Rapid City, agrees with Beesch for the most part. Burns thinks a good gift is, “something thoughtful and creative.”

“One year my boyfriend got me a sweet letter, candy and flowers,” Burns says, “but the candy wasn’t that great and the letter was the best part because it was personal.”

So fellas have the responsibility of being creative, personal, thoughtful and imaginative. What do the girls have to do? The majority of people who we interviewed didn’t think Valentine’s Day was as important for guys as for girls.

Nick Dewald, a civil engineering major from Rapid City has already exchanged presents withhis girlfriend and he says, “for girls it’s hard to get a guy something.”

“I think casual jewelry is a good gift,” Dewald says as he points at the bracelet his girlfriend gave him for Valentine’s Day. “Like stuff from Pac Sun,” he says as he gestures to his ring, “or something from American Eagle,” he says again pointing to his gift from his girlfriend.

Dewald also says, “Flowers aren’t good [for guy]. Not manly.”

For a girl, an item that reminds a girl of something she misses from home is what he would recommend as a gift.

“I got my girlfriend a stuffed golden retriever because she misses her baby (puppy from home).”

He must be right about that being a good gift choice because the response of all the smiling girls around Dewald was, “awww,” and a couple of them comment that his was a really good reason to get a stuffed animal for a girl.

Dewald’s girlfriend, Kristin Jones, is a freshman psychology major from Rapid City and she agrees that it was a good gift.

“I think it was really cute,” Jones says. “It was good because it was sentimental.”

Be an Original

Communication studies and theatre major William Nolan Hayes from Sioux Falls doesn’t think Valentine’s Day presents should be reserved for boyfriends and girlfriends.

“Even if you hate Valentine’s Day the unexpected thing can be a great gift,” Hayes says.

What’s more unexpected than getting a gift when you don’t have a significant other?

“Look around, if you have friends who don’t have a boyfriend or girlfriend,” Hayes says. “Even if they’re grumbling about V-day – well, if you do something nice, or even secret for them – they’ll love it and that would be good [gift giving].”

Hayes also agreed with Beesch about creating a gift.

“For a guy, if he plays the guitar he should write a song for a girl and play it for her,” Hayes says.

The truth is, a man doesn’t even have to write the song himself. Both Beesch and Burns agreed that most ladies would love a serenade no matter who authors the tune.

However, Hayes seems to think creating is the important part of a gift.

“Anything you create yourself, that makes a good gift,” he says. “Originality is the best gift; let it come from the heart.”

Going for a gift that is out of the ordinary and surprising was also recommended.

Scott Schnider, and economics major from Rapid City says, “Depending on the weather a picnic is good. It’s good because it’s unique.”

While Melissa Lamb, a freshman apparel merchandising major from Vienna, SD, says, “I got surprised with flowers once, but the surprise was the good part.”

Lamb also had a doozy of an idea that involved a blindfold.

“If he kidnapped you and blindfolded you and took you someplace special that would be great,” she says. “And he could take you different places, like dinner and then if he surprised you with something like a play or a concert, or even concert tickets!”

Kind of a complex idea for one night’s festivities, but others are content with something simple. Like Jim Harriman, a freshman from Waterville, Minn., who says, “If a girl cooked me dinner that would be a good gift, because it comes from the heart.”

Well, it might come from the heart, or it might come from a box, but the point is, that’s what Harriman would like and his girlfriend would probably know that.

Sophomore agronomy major Chet Vander Velde from Sanborn, Iowa, thinks his girl would know that clothes are a good gift for him because he hates to shop.

“Or tools,” Vander Velde says, “’cause you can never have enough tools.”

Great Gifts!

Well, whether you sing it, buy it, make it or bake it, it seems like a great gift includes thought and feeling. You may need a little luck too, because many of the old standbys don’t seem to satisfy unless they have a special meaning behind them.

The Fourth Annual Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) Dance Marathon was held on Saturday, Feb. 5, at the Old Sanctuary on the corner of Fourth St. and Medary in Brookings.

The University Program Council coordinates the dance-a-thon to raise money for CMN, an international network that helps injured, sick and disabled children. The UPC organized the event with the local chapter of the CMN and the Sioux Valley Children’s Hospital (SVCH).

Eleven families involved with the organization participated in the event.

The event was held from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., and the group played games and participated in many fun activities. The packed schedule included ice-skating, dancing, music and attending the SDSU men’s basketball game. All participants were given a free T-shirt, commemorating the event.

The theme for the event this year was “Olympics.” The kids were grouped with students and they played “morale games.”

Jesse Wolfe, the social awareness coordinator for the UPC, said the goal was to raise $15,000 this year.

At the end of the day, the total amount of money raised was over $10,000, but more contributions are expected to be made.

“We will be having more money come in over the rest of the semester, and we’ll know the actual amount raised then,” Wolfe said.

Amy Sumner, the regional CMN director, said the money donated to CMN can be used to help families travel to see doctors, for lodging while seeking treatment and for SVCH to purchase life-saving medical equipment and supplies.

“Our funds directly help the sick and injured children in many ways,” Sumner said.

Spencer Collins is a fifth grader from Sioux Falls who was chosen by CMN to come to the event. He and his family attended the festivities last year as well.

Spencer’s mother, Kristin Collins, said Spencer suffers from cerebral palsy and ADHD.

“CMN sponsors Spencer’s trips to Camp Courage, a summer camp for kids with disorders,” Collins said. “He gets to be normal for a week.”

Joe Collins, Spencer’s father, said the students who take part in the event, “don’t realize what a big impact it has.”

Josh Clark, a sophomore biology major, participated in the project along with other members of his fraternity, Delta Chi. This was his second year being involved with the marathon.

“It was fun last year, and it’s a good way to get involved at the school,” Clark said.

Several local businesses helped to make the event possible. SDSU Dining Services donated food for the event, the Brookings Ice Arena donated three hours of free skate time and SDSU gave 300 tickets for the SDSU men’s basketball game against Upper Iowa. Other businesses that made donations included Subway, Papa John’s, Papa Murphy’s and Coca-Cola.

Top individual money-raisers were Matt Anderson, Melissa Bonander and Tonya Hohenthaner. Leading Greek money raisers were Alpha Xi Delta, Chi Omega and Delta Chi.

During the 11th annual Screen Actor’s Guild Awards Saturday, Feb. 5, the first Actor Award for Outstanding Performance of a Cast in a Feature-length Motion Picture went to the cast of Sideways.

I, for one, wholeheartedly agree with this decision. The more I think about the film, the higher it ranks among my all-time favorites.

At first glance, Sideways seemed to be a movie about the friendship between a divorced, middle-aged eighth-grade English teacher and his outrageous, fun actor friend.

However, as the audience is acquainted with the characters it becomes evident that things aren’t as they have seemed.

Although the actor is getting married, he’s not exactly faithful. And although the teacher is thwarted at every turn, he emerges as quite a hero by the end of the film.

You’ll like this flick if …

… you don’t mind thinking about the things in life that are certainly uncertain. This tragicomedy examines the pathetic with a lighthearted view and much of the humor is funny because it is so sad.

You won’t like this flick if …

… you want rip-roaring action and non-stop gut laughs. While it is a funny film, it takes introspective turns that cause tearful moments that are almost equal in opposition to the chuckles.

Plus, anyone who wants to avoid life lessons while at the theatre should avoid Sideways.

It also has a possibly annoying twist at the end.

In the end …

… the film is poignant and insightful and still manages to be funny. I think it will be taught in school someday – in almost every class.

It is a great trip though the California countryside and the psyches of all the personalities involved.

By the time the film comes to the end of these journeys, the audience is given the opportunity to learn the difference between being a character and having character.

All Five Stars
