People can expect music, fresh talent and a little out of the ordinary when Cavorts returns to the Performing Arts Center on Sept. 28 at 8:00 p.m.

“You”, the Cavorts’ theme, is meant to showcase the talents of those not typically in the spotlight. According to Brady Mallory, third year journalism major and event organizer, “You” will do just that.

“The show is about the students? the ones that get lost in the shuffle of college life,” Mallory said. “This is their chance to show off their gifts.”

The show features ten acts highlighting veteran and fresh talent.

Micah Wetzel, a fifth year music and business major, is no stranger to the stage. He returns for his fourth and final Cavorts show. He said that the past few years he’s been “pretty serious.” But, he plans “to have fun this time” by singing “Africa” by TOTO.

Brittany Welk, a second year music merchandising major, is an up and coming country singer. She makes her first Cavorts appearance singing Trisha Yearwood’s “That’s What I Like About You.” Welk said she’s been “singing for quite awhile” and “?hopes to pursue it as a full-time career someday.”

This year, a colorful performance comes to the stage as well. The Yellow and Blue Man Group will be ending the night with a bang–well, banging, that is–of tuned industrial piping. This imaginative performance features two replicas of original BMG apparatuses.

Apart from shedding light on local talent, the show is designed to entertain in a big way.

Cavorts’ attendance is growing larger every year. Over a thousand people are expected to attend the annual talent show. Along with the attendance, Mallory anticipates the show to surpass last year’s and set a precedent for the next.

“I’ve always been a fan of big productions,” Mallory said. “I can promise it’s gonna be big!”

Three SDSU students participated in the American Forensic Association National Individual Events Tournament held March 31 through April 3 at the University of Florida in Gainesville.

The team qualified for the national speech competition by competing in tournaments throughout the year and in the final district tournament.

Believe it or not, Christians might be the reason for more conversions to atheism than anything else.

Brennan Manning reflected upon this thinking when he said, “The greatest single cause of atheism in the world today is Christians, who acknowledge Jesus with their lips and walk out the door, and deny Him by their lifestyle. That is what an unbelieving world simply finds unbelievable.”

Are my actions really leading people away from Christ? I believe in Jesus, go to church and pray often. I could tell you the Ten Commandments. I might even be able to explain some of the finer theological aspects of Christianity.

In dealing with all those technical aspects, I missed the bigger picture. The way I lived was not portraying Christ. I acknowledged Jesus with my lips during church, but walked out the door and didn’t praise him by the life I was living.

1 John 1:6 says, “If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth.”

I was lying to myself and not living by the truth. In short, I wasn’t practicing what I preached. I constantly walked in darkness with no remorse towards the damage I was creating. In church, I was praising God. In public, I was cursing with the same mouth. The example I was setting didn’t reflect Christ.

The truth is that the world holds Christians to a higher standard. People may see Christians as hypocrites due to the lifestyles they lead. This turns them off to Christianity. The world can’t believe how Christians can claim to be living for Christ, yet live the way they do. What’s the point of joining a faith when its followers don’t even try to live for God?

I don’t expect every Christian that reads this to go and live a perfect lifestyle from here on out. Perfection, on this earth, is impossible.

Each day we face constant struggles with temptations that lead us away from Christ. If we were perfect, Jesus wouldn’t have had to come and save us from our sins by dying on the cross.

Perfection is out of our range, but leading God-pleasing lives is not. People should be able to tell we are Christians by the way we live. Our lifestyles are to be used to glorify God. This should lead people to Him, not turn people away.

Any student that attends SDSU has heard that “you can go anywhere from here.” The question that most graduate students are asking themselves is: “How do I start going anywhere from here?” Most graduates have a few basic questions as they look for their jobs.

When do I start?

With graduation a month away, there’s no better time to start a job search than now. Susan Fredrikson, employment development director for the Career and Academic Planning (CAP) Center, said “The sooner, the better.” It’s never too early to start finding and applying for jobs.

“The process could take well over a month,” she said.

Therefore, Fredrikson encourages students to “start now.”

Where do I get started?

The CAP Center is one place to start the search. The CAP Center’s Web site states that the services revolve around helping you prepare for academic and career transitions.”

Among the many useful services the CAP Center offers are career counseling and practice interviews. The Web site says that career counseling will help you “explore your employment options within your major.”

The only fraternity that doesn’t use Greek letters celebrated its 40th anniversary last weekend.

The FarmHouse Fraternity has been “Building Men” since 1966. The SDSU chapter has been home to more than 600 alumni throughout its history. Of these, more than 160 alumni came back to celebrate the history of the second-oldest fraternity on campus.

Tours of the house were given Friday evening and continued into Saturday.

Guests were shown where the residents live, work and eat.

“The house holds 32,” David Ireland, house president, said, “It’s a little tight.”

The FarmHouse has living quarters, a kitchen and lounges.

“The house is complete with two back lounges,” Ireland jokes that is “where we solve the world’s problems.”

Guests were shown a “John Deere green” three-fold display. The setup showed the “Four Pillars” the FarmHouse focuses on when building quality men: spiritually, intellectually, socially and morally and physically.

Saturday morning guests were given tours of the campus in horse- drawn trollies. Guests came back to the smell of barbecue in the air. Three cooks exchanged stories with each other while preparing for the barbecue luncheon held at noon. An association meeting was held later in the afternoon.

Four hundred people attended the banquet, followed by a dance.

Clark Hanson, faculty advisor, said the turnout was “Awesome … we had eight of the 24 original members back for the banquet.”

Alumni showed up with their families to celebrate the history of the FarmHouse Fraternity. Hanson said the turnout for the weekend “was way beyond our expectations.”

For the entire weekend, Hanson said “$10,000 was raised for a scholarship by raffling off an antique John Deere Tractor.”

Throughout the FarmHouse Fraternity’s 40-year history, the object of the fraternity has been to “promote good fellowship, to encourage studiousness, and to inspire its members in seeking the best in their chosen lines of study as well as in life.”

Ireland said that FarmHouse “helps you develop as a man and get ready for real life.”

For Mike Bosch, director of alumni relations, being part of this fraternity “opens doors to alot of new things.”

Chairman John Toft said, “they [FarmHouse] keep you involved in campus activities.”

This includes working for Habitat for Humanity. Nearly $6,000 was raised to help build houses last fall.

Toft said that when they aren’t participating in major events, the men do “little stuff, like helping elderly people move from house to house.”

The members of the FarmHouse Fraternity have had steady figures influence their lives through the years. Hanson has been involved for the past 33 years. This includes service on the International Board of Directors and even as the International president. He has served non-consecutively as the faculty advisor for the SDSU chapter for 10 years.

Hanson said FarmHouse taught him “leadership abilities, confidence, and enhances abilities to work with people.”

The female presence at the fraternity has been Deb DeBates. She is the current house mother and has been offering support to the men for the past 16 years.

“If anyone has problems they can talk to me,” DeBates said, “I’ve also been know to proofread papers as well.”

DeBates runs an orderly house. “We keep a Cussin’ Jar. If I catch them swearing, they have to put money in it.”

Marge Rang, current house cook, has been serving up hot meals for the past 18 years.

Ireland said, “we eat real well.” The meals she prepares are important in keeping the residents well-fed and energized for their daily tasks.

Tory Haggerty has taken over the task of managing KSDJ for the next year. Haggerty replaced Jay Buchholz this semester as the new station manager.

After serving in the Air Force on active duty for four years and in the South Dakota National Guard for over a year, Haggerty came to SDSU. He was sure that radio was where his future lay.

“I’ve always been interested in radio and just knew that this was the career path I wanted to follow,” he said.

His experience includes work at six different radio stations, and at Brookings Radio for the past year.

Haggerty plans on making a few changes to the station. He is bringing in a new voice-over personality to build a reputable sweeper library (sweepers are five to 10 second sound clips that play in between songs). He also plans on updating KSDJ’s current Web site. The site will provide station information, including a DJ schedule. Also, after having difficulties, KSDJ is back online at live365.com.

The KSDJ Rock Show is an upcoming event to showcase local talent. Haggerty plans on doing live broadcasts from the show and having KSDJ staff members present at the event. Haggerty is optimistic for the future.

“I’m looking for a great year here at KSDJ,” he said.
