This letter serves two purposes: First, in response to Mr. Harders letter to the editor from last week. 1)Throughout his letter, he says MURDER, over and over again, yet he assumes that everyone thinks life begins at conception. 2)If life begins at conception, why is a child not 9 months old when they are born. Some people believe that life begins with birth. 3)I was taught that life begins 22 days after conception when the heart begins to beat. So, how is it murder if something isn’t even alive yet? (I am sick of people who hide behind religion, it is just a copout. Last time I checked, abortion was legal in South Dakota. Hence, NO MURDER).My other topic is dealing with SDSU. I have heard almost every student and numerous professors complain about the heat in Rotunda. The sad thing, that is not even the worse place on campus. I have class in the basement of Wacota and Wenona Halls where the temperature reaches above 90 degrees in the classroom. (HOW DOES THAT HAPPEN?) With the cost of tuition that we pay, they can’t afford air conditioning? We spend $450,000 out of the Buildings fund to rebuild the Presidents house, yet we can’t allow the students to learn in a comfortable setting? That kind of heat is not conducive to learning.

The fact that discussion about Woodbine Cottage is continuing shows that there is a major flaw. I think Stephen Van Buren made a good point when he said, “The building is no longer historic, but only old fashioned.” They added on to the building, how is that preserving history…it’s not, that is adding on new components. If it’s historical, it should be preserved as is and just fixed, not total renovated. The house has not had insulation since 1881, why start now?I understand that the money came from the HEFF, but the building does not meet certain criteria, like benefitting the students. Being on the Hobo Day Committee, I was looking forward to the Dinner being there so I could actually go inside of it for the first time in my 6 year college history. SMALL PROBLEM, because of the Renovation, the dinner will not be held there. It was called “our home,” yet I have never stepped one foot in it and refuse to associate it as “my home.”Our SA President Amanda Mattingly said that “I guarantee that students are not suffering or going without because of these renovations and improvements.” If that is true, why did student clubs like the men’s hockey team receive 22% less money? That is a STUDENT organization, now I would think if $450,000 came from students fees for the house, some of that might have been taken from the men’s hockey team. The men’s team was in the National Tournament for the 2nd time in 5 years, so we reward them by cutting their funding? Also, the Women’s Hockey Team did not even recieve enough money to pay for practice twice a week. That does not even include games or travel. So, how are the students not suffering? That is just two programs that took major hits financially…how many other student programs lost money that “wasn’t due to the missing $450,000 in Student Fees.”

While $450,000 to “renovate” Woodbine Cottage is totally astrinomical and outrageous, that’s not the worst part. The money is coming from STUDENT FEES. Since when is that an issue of the students, I would almost guarentee than less than 50% of the students have ever even been inside of the building. If the State Historical Society and the Brookings Historic Preservation Commission are so concerned about the building, let them pay for the renovation and build the president a new house that could be build at a much grander scale and at a price tag far less than $450,000. And most importantly, don’t make the students pay for it. Look at the crap students live in, 8 X 12 cells that we are charged $3500 a year for. When you do the math, the $450,000 doesn’t add up, is Clark Drew Construction Company seriously the cheapest SDSU could find?

Two people wrote about the “Blowjob” Article last week in Letters to the Editor about how they were appauled that the Collegian would print an article like that. I saw, Good Job Collegian…do these people think that oral sex doesn’t happen at SDSU? I mean, sex is a part of society and should be as opening written about as sports or religion. If there are people out there that don’t like sports, I don’t see them writing letters to the editor about how sports are bringing down civilization. Also, if you see the word BLOWJOB in the title of an article, DON’T READ IT. It’s that simple, the Collegian has freedom of press which allows them to print what they want, us as readers have the choice to read what we want…

In this letter to the editor, I actually confront two problems that are both related. First, with the recent departures of two top managers for KSDJ, questions have to arise about whether the changes to the station are for the better? Granted, the listenership is up for the station which is good, but it’s not a commercial station. College radio stations are for expression, which is not allowed until the new format. The station has gone from playing music that you normally wouldn’t be introduced to, to now playing the same music everyone else plays.Second, with the war now in stride, it is my feeling that Ashley Allen is taking himself way to seriously. On Friday at Noon, KSDJ went on the air with a panel of 5-6 “guests” who were supposedly “experts” on one aspect of the war. I’m sorry, but a majority of people are not going to be turning to KSDJ for serious news coverage. That’s why people have telelvisions or friends with televisions.
