As Old Man Winter blows in and summer days of basking in the sun are long forgotten, students turn to an alternative source of sunlight to get rid of their winter blues.

Indoor tanning remains a popular activity among adults despite the various health risks associated with it.

“My freshman year I started getting seasonal depression so tanning is like artificial sunlight to me,” Darcy Kallhoff, a junior from Marietta, Minn, said.

Kallhoff, who started tanning her freshmen year in high school, said curing her seasonal depression is not the only reason she chooses to go tanning.

“It’s makes me feel better about myself,” Kallhoff said. “It’s like a self esteem and relaxation booster.”

The self esteem boost tanned look is what sends Annie Hegg, a junior from Canby, Minn., to the tanning beds.

“I just tan in the winter because I want to get light,” Hegg said.

Hegg said that she also finds the experience relaxing and tries to go whenever she can find the time.

“I enjoy it because it’s relaxing and I like to lay out in the summer along the beach,” Hegg said. “It’s a way to get warm rays.”

According to Jo Fix, manager of Year Round Brown, tanning has many other positives.

“Tanning has a lot of positive effects. It helps people with SAD disorder, it’s good for people with acne, and a lot of people come to help boost their self esteem,” Fix said.

Another positive is the controlled tanning atmosphere.

“In comparison to the sun, you’re in a controlled environment. It’s better in that effect,” Fix said.

While there are some positives to tanning, there are also risks.

According to a recent study done by the Food and Drug Administration and the Federal Trade Commission, overexposure to indoor tanning rays can cause eye injury, premature wrinkling of the skin, light-induced skin rashes, and can increase the chances of skin cancer.

With these risks considered, Year Round Brown and other tanning salons comply with federal regulations and a South Dakota law that allows tanning only once a day.

Tanning salons also set down their own guidelines and rules.

“We suggest different guidelines for different beds you choose and suggest what type of lotion to use,” Fix said.

Year Round Brown uses a skin analysis to help their clients determine their skin type and what time they should start out at so that burning does not occur.

The Ritz Hair Studio, a hair and tanning salon in one, also lays down guidelines and suggestions for tanning.

“We do have goggles or sunnies that they have to wear,” Melissa Schenkel, an employee, said. “Starting out we usually suggest 10 minutes at the most.”

Since the Ritz provides a variety of services to their customers, they often incorporate this with their tanning.

“We really stress covering eyebrows that have been recently waxed since the skin is sensitive,” Schenkel said.

While both tanning salons give suggestions for decreasing the risks associated with tanning, it all comes down to the discretion of the tanner.

“We give them all their different options. It depends on the person,” Schenkel said.

While Kallhoff and Hegg have continued to tan despite the risks, both said they are aware of them.

“I kind of talk myself out of the risk as saying I won’t do this the rest of my life,” Kallhoff said.

The annual cross country run will be held Saturday before the game. The three-mile route will conclude in front of the grandstands on the athletic field. The runners will compete for the Ewing trophy, put up this fall by Coach Ewing.

November 8, 1956

Two State College sophomores and two Brookings High School students survived a one-car accident early Sunday morning on Highway 77 south of Brookings. The group was believed to have been returning home from a dance at Dell Rapids when the car went off the left side of the road, swerved back, entered the right ditch, and rolled several times. One student was taken to a Sioux Falls hospital by ambulance while the other three were treated and released at the Brookings hospital.

November 9, 1971

SDSU students will be asking the Board of Regents for closed door visitation in the dormitories. SA President John Ramey told the students that in supporting the recommendation he would try to get the University of South Dakota to go along with SDSU’s stand. On paper, the USD’s visitation program is operating with open doors but according to Board of Control members and other students at the meeting, in actual practice, USD has closed door visitation.

November 12, 1986

A Brookings collector’s etching valued at less than $1,000 was stolen sometime Sunday from the Ritz Gallery in Solberg Hall. The print, part of the visual art department’s show titled “Brookings Collects,” is untitled, signed by Dali and part of a large unnumbered edition. Keith Corbett, safety and security chief, said there were no signs of physical entry made to the building. He said although there are no leads now, safety and security are still investigating the theft.

November 6, 1996

The Pride of Dakotas, along with other entertainers, opened for President Bill Clinton Monday night during a Sioux Falls rally, the final stop in his election’s eve campaign tour. After a stop in Iowa to help bolster the re-election of Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa), Clinton began his late-night speech just 40 minutes before election day in the Sioux Falls arena.

When it comes to entertainment, many college students find themselves out of ideas and out of money.

But a night on the town in Brookings is possible and affordable.

In fact, sometimes it takes only $10 and a group of friends to make the night worthwhile.

Laura Dixon, a junior from Brandon, recommends bowling, ice skating, going to the movies or playing pool to cure those midsemester blues.

“If you go ice skating or bowling, you’re moving around,” Dixon said. “Doing something like that involves other people.

The Brookings Ice Arena offers a fun-filled night of skating for the maximum price of $4 — $2 to skate and $2 to rent ice skates.

“It’s a pretty reasonable price,” Bob Anderson, a Brookings Ice Arena employee, said. “For $2 that’s pretty cheap entertainment.”

The rink is open from the end of October to the middle of March and has open skating hours from 8 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. daily.

“I go about five times a year,” Dixon said. “It’s a good physical activity. You learn something new if you don’t know how to skate.”

Dixon is not the only student that takes the ice for entertainment.

“There’s times that there might be 100 to 200 kids out here,” Anderson said.

Prairie Lanes Bowling, located at 722 Western Ave., also sees its share of students.

“With the special, we get around 50 to 75 students some nights,” promotional director Bob Grafing said.

The Tuesday night special, $1.90 a game and free shoes with a College ID, is not the only reason students throw a ball at 10 pins.

According to Grafing, students can be found any night of the week at Prairie Lanes Bowling. The bowling alley has a college league on Monday nights and offers a Gallaxy Light Show with music, lights, and fog on Friday and Saturday nights.

Open seven days a week, the popular college hang-out also offers a full service restaurant with daily specials under $5.

“We just try to make it fun for anybody that comes in,” Grafing said. “Bowling is a fun sport.”

Dixon said that she recommends bowling because it is an interactive sport that you can play while hanging out with friends.

“It’s kind of a thing that everyone knows how to do and likes to do,” Dixon said.

While some students may feel the need to get out and be active, others just want to spend time with friends while out on the town.

Chad Haselhorst, a junior from Cresbard, recommends Tuesday nights for hitting the streets of Brookings.

“The town of Brookings has great deals on Tuesdays — cheap bowling, cheap movies, Taco Tuesdays, cheap pizza,” Haselhorst said.

One activity that Haselhorst finds himself doing on Tuesdays is heading to the movie theatre.

Showcase Cinema 5, located in the Brookings City Plaza, offers an admission price of $4 per ticket on Tuesday evenings and Saturday and Sunday matinees on some films.

“You’re saving $2.50 per ticket,” said owner Dick Peterson. “Anytime there is a discount or you can save some money, it’s a great time to do it.”

The discount is not the only reason students go to the theatre.

Blockbusters, the night of the week and the theatre experience itself can make a difference in attendance, said Peterson.

The theatre experience is one reason both Haselhorst and Dixon attend.

Haselhorst takes his girlfriend to the movies as a way of spending time together and getting out at the same time.

“It’s easy and close to go to the movies,” Haselhorst said.

“It’s a different thing to do. It’s easier to concentrate on the movie rather than in your room or at home,” Dixon said.

No matter what the activity is, all it takes is a positive attitude and the motivation to have fun.

A Students’ Association committee began investigating possible sites for a skating rink during the past week. Five sites are under consideration. President Johnson said that he was in favor of the move on the part of the Students’ Association and considers the roofing of the rink, a practical idea.

November 6, 1952

New parking regulations for dormitory residents have been approved by the State College parking committee. According to the new rules, all freshmen staying in the dormitories who do not use their cars in their work will be required to park in a lot designated by the parking committee instead of around the dorms. Students permitted to park their cars around the dormitories include sophomores, juniors and seniors; students who use their cars for work; physically handicapped students and second year or more agricultural students who are high school graduates.

November 5, 1964

South Daktota State University may face a major seating problem in the fieldhouse this basketball season. The fieldhouse, with a seating capacity of 3,390, will be expected to accomodate more than that number of students plus the season ticket holders. Temporary bleachers will be set up again and no general admission tickets will be sold for the downstairs sections. When State faced a similar seating problem in 1956 and 1957, closed circuit television was used to transmit games to some of the students.

November 2, 1977

The SDSU volleyball team won three games and lost two, finishing third in an eight-team tournament held at home last weekend. Final regular season action for the spikers is at Yankton Tuesday while district tournament play begins Friday in Sioux Falls.

November 1, 1995

Investigation continues in a Hobo Day sexual assault that occured on Oct. 14. Evidence was sent to the state crime lab and after the evidence has been analyzed, State’s Attorney Clyde Calhoon will decide whether charges can be filed. According to University Police Chief Mark Robinson, alcohol was involved and the incident occured in a dorm.

As day turns into night on Oct. 31, the streets of Brookings will be running wild with the shrieks and howls of witches, devils, ghosts, ballerinas, football players and even Sponge Bob Square Pants.

Halloween, a time of trick-or-treating, causing mischief, and getting a little scared, is not just for children anymore.

No, the holiday spirit still lives on in some SDSU students.

“I go out to house parties, dress up and cut the rug,” Tara Kline, a junior from St. Paul, Minn. said.

Kline has kept a steady Halloween tradition since arriving on campus her freshman year.

A member of the campus organization Circle K, Kline first takes time to volunteer at the United Retirement Center.

“I volunteer over there for a couple of hours and do programs with the elderly. One year they had a band and another year they had Halloween bingo,” Kline said.

After volunteering, Kline heads home to get her costume for a night on the town.

Dressing up as a doctor the first year and as a 60s girl the next, Kline leaves this year as a surprise.

“I’ll probably go shopping around town and find a cool costume,” Kline said.

Kline said she is looking forward to seeing the trick-or-treaters as this is her first year out of the dorm.

“Hopefully some kids will come and see the lights on,” Kline said.

As some students head out in costumes, others plan on staying at home for the trick-or-treaters.

Margaret Kallemeyn, a junior from Rapid City, is looking forward to carving pumpkins, seeing the trick-or-treaters and just getting scared.

“This year I’ll have to attend Pharmacy Days but afterwards I plan to watch scary movies at a friend’s apartment,” Kallemeyn said.

Kallemeyn said that she also plans on carving pumpkins, buying candy and decorating.

“For this Halloween, I’m just looking forward to having fun and getting to see the trick-or-treaters again,” Kallemeyn said.

Roommates Ryan Carda and Drew Millard are also looking forward to the holiday.

“I’m looking forward to giving half of our stash of candy to one little kid,” Millard, a junior from Rockford, Minn., said.

Carda, a junior from Cresbard, said that he agrees, but if it is Skittles, he will probably keep them for himself.

While the roommates are anticipating many trick-or-treaters in bright and scary costumes coming to their door, they are also trying to narrow down an idea for a costume for themselves.

“I’ll probably dress up in a gorilla suit,” Carda said.

“If I was going to be something, I would be Sponge Bob Square Pants,” Millard said.

Both Millard and Carda said they do not have a complete plan yet for their Halloween night, but do plan on having fun.

Carda recommends that every student take part in the holiday tradition of Halloween.

“I would say get the craziest costume you can get and go out on the town,” Carda said.

As SDSU reaches the halfway point in the semester, many students’ stress levels will be rising.

Cramming for midterms, working part-time jobs and finding time for friends can seem overwhelming to the average student but there are ways to deal with stress before it builds up.

“I’ll just try to get away from college life,” Rick Hansen, a sophomore from Faulkton, S.D., said.

Hansen, an engineering major, tries to take a time out for himself by visiting friends and going out to parties.

While Hansen recommends being around people to relieve stress, other students try to get away from it all.

Marie Fitz, a junior from Britton, S.D., advises students who are stressed out, to take time to be alone. Fitz often goes for bike rides to relieve her stress.

“Basically I just try to get away from everybody and be alone,” Fitz said.

Jill Anderson, a sophomore from Rapid City, tries to make time for herself and often uses the weekends for this purpose.

“I do nothing on weekends, watch movies and hang out with friends,” Anderson said.

As some students try to relax by being alone, others get out and participate in activities they enjoy.

“I play flag football except when I have to study,” Jon Halter, a senior from Grand Rapids, Minn., said.

When it comes to stress, each person has their own way of dealing with it. It all comes down to the individual.

“Students shouldn’t let work or school dominate their entire life,” Michelle Ruesink, staff counselor at the SDSU counseling center, said.

Ruesink counsels students individually on stress management skills through self-assessment and coping skills tests. After finding the student’s weaknesses, Ruesink then provides guidance as to what the student needs to work on.

“If they take care of themselves spiritually, emotionally, physically and mentally, they’ll better be able to cope,” Ruesink said.

Ruesink recommends finding a balance between the activities students need to do and the activities they want to do.

“Take a walk, be with friends, along with studying for that Chem test,” Ruesink said.

But how do students find that happy medium?

Ruesink gives these tips for students who need to relieve stress in their life: be a scholar, go to class, see your advisor once a term, work out daily, sleep six to eight hours a night, eat breakfast daily, avoid procrastination, be good to yourself and others, focus on doing one thing at a time, set a realistic schedule, be kind to unkind people, laugh easily and often and learn from the past but live in the present.

If students find themselves not being able to deal with stress on their own, Ruesink recommends seeking assistance, through counseling or spiritual services.

“Take one day at a time to see what you need to do to get through the day,” Ruesink said.

October 19, 1920

South Dakota State College students were able to watch the football game between NDU and State, played in Grand Forks, at the Fad Theater in Brookings Saturday afternoon. Through the use of an electric football board, the audience was able to watch the game play by play.

October 18, 1956

State College’s cross-country team defeated Omaha 38-17 at Omaha Friday. Jackrabbit runners took the first four places and seventh positions in the three-mile event.

October 19, 1971

The Board of Regents recently granted the privilege of visitation to Binnewies Hall. Binnewies asked for and received the maximum program which included 28 hours of visitation a week and a closed door policy. The 28 hours are evenly divided between the women and men areas of the dorm. All rooms with guests may have their doors opened or closed. Binnewies is the first of State University’s nine dorms to be permitted visitation.

October 23, 1985

The Board of Regents decided Friday in Vermillion to give fraternity and sorority members until December to prove why alcohol should not be banned from their houses. The regents had planned to ban alcohol, but the Committee of Student and Academic Affairs Thursday voted to 2-1 to defer action until its December meeting in Spearfish.

October 19, 1994

An average tuition increase of 3.9 percent next year at state-supported universities was approved unanimously Friday by the Board of Regents. Tuition for resident students will be three percent higher.

Over the last 118 years, South Dakota State University has seen as many trends and fads walk through the door each year as students.

One recent trend among college students is piercings, and it’s not just ears anymore. No, piercings can now be found just about anywhere on the human body.

“You can actually get an original piercing,” said Sam Snyder, owner of Studio 27. “You can get your finger pierced now if you want to.”

Snyder, who also owns tattoo and piercing businesses in Watertown and Vermillion, recently brought his business to Brookings and has been piercing SDSU students.

According to Snyder, the most popular piercings among students are the navel, eyebrow, tongue, nose, labret and ears.

“It’s mostly facial,” Snyder said.

While Studio 27 is new to town, many students have had piercings for years now.

Carly Erickson, a junior from Madison, S.D., has had her nose pierced since the age of 18.

“I guess I always thought it looked pretty neat,” Erickson said.

After getting it pierced, Erickson said she had no problems and the pain was minimal.

“I think getting your ears pierced hurt worse,” Erickson said.

Bobbi Matter, a junior from Faulkton, S.D., agrees.

“When I would lose the balls to the body jewelry, it would fall out. You wouldn’t feel it. It didn’t tear,” Matter said.

Matter, who once had her navel and tongue pierced, has only her ears pierced now.

After losing her navel piercing over three times and spending $125 to have the piercing redone, Matter decided to let the hole close.

“I lost it somewhere along my freshman year. It fell out and I just never did it again,” Matter said.

After the naval piercing, Matter decided to get her tongue pierced.

“Personally I like piercings,” Matter said. “There are certain places I wouldn’t put them, but I still like piercings.”

After making a trip to the dentist, Matter found out she needed to have a smaller bar put in her tongue or her lower jaw bone would start to deteriorate.

Instead of spending another $30 to $40, Matter decided to lose her tongue piercing.

“Somedays I kind of miss my tongue ring, but with my belly, it kept falling out so I don’t miss that,” Matter said.

While Matter has left her piercing days behind, other students are just beginning.

Lacey Bartell, a sophomore from Lemmon, S.D., recently made a trip to Bismarck with a friend to get a piercing.

“I wanted to get something done but I didn’t know what,” Bartell said.

Bartell decided to pierce her eyebrow.

“At first people were like whoa, cool and now it’s like there,” Bartell said. “It’s lost all it’s excitement but I still like it.”

Bartell said that she wants to get one more piercing but has not decided where yet.

One piercing that Bartell decided not to get is her labret, the area between the lip and the chin. After witnessing a friend take a drink and lose it out her piercing, Bartell decided that wasn’t for her.

“I wouldn’t get that done because of that,” Bartell said.

Bartell is not the only student getting pierced.

Studio 27 has seen its share of college students since its recent opening and many of them are women.

“I’d say probably about 75 percent are women,” Snyder said.

Snyder, recommends students go to a piercing professional rather than trying to do it themselves.

According to Snyder, sterilization and the right training is important for the piercings to heal.

“There is some definite do’s and don’ts and people who don’t know how shouldn’t be doing it on themselves or their friends,” Snyder said.

When it comes to this new trend, there are many possibilities, according to Snyder.

“Piercings are definitely more easier for people to make up their minds about,” Snyder said.

No matter where people want to get pierced, it all comes down to the person.

“Go ahead and do it if you like it,” Erickson said.

South Dakota State College won its third victory against Yankton. With speed and endurance, the State college team defeated Yankton 12-0 on the local field.

October 16, 1940

Two hundred eighty-six South Dakota State College students between the ages of 21 and 35 began contributing their share to national defense today. Students will register under the provisions of the Selective Service Act, for a year of military duty. Three hundred eighty-six students at State College were within the age limits of the selective service measure at the time of registration. Of this number, 68 men were enrolled in advanced ROTC and 32 men were enlisted in the National Guard, making them exempt from registration.

October 23, 1969

Around 500 South Dakota State University students participated in a Vietnam war moratorium held Oct. 15. The moratorium was designed as an open forum with panel discussions running continuously throughout the day, informal talks about the war, and a film, “Vietnam- How We Got In, How to Get Out.”

October 26, 1977

A reciprocity agreement with Minnesota moved closer to reality Friday, when the South Dakota Board of Regents approved the proposal. The reciprocal tuition pact will allow students from South Dakota and Minnesota to attend state-supported colleges in either state, paying in-state tuition rather than out-of-state tuition.

October 11, 1995

SDSU Students’ Association President Dan Fuhr had a suspended 30-day jail term reinstated last Thursday. The sentence was first imposed after a drinking and driving conviction in February. At that time, it was suspended on the condition that he obey the law for a year. The sentence was reinstated last week because in May, Fuhr was arrested again, this time for underage consumption and fleeing a police officer.

As Native American Day approaches, many students and faculty members will use the three-day weekend as a time of relaxation and as a time to get away from the daily stess of college life.

The holiday weekend is more than just a time to relax though. It’s also a time to reflect on the history and culture of American Indians.

There are many aspects of the indigenous people to consider as the holiday grows closer, but one important area to focus on is the Native American religion.

In the 19th century, American Indians lost many of their religious customs as whites forced them to convert to Christianity, sent their children to mission schools and banned some of their ceremonies.

Today, more than two-thirds of American Indians characterize themselves at least nominally as Christians, according to a pamphlet called “100 Questions, 500 Nations.”

Some American Indians have combined their Christian beliefs with their native religions. Others practice two separate faiths.

“Many of us are Christians so that we observe many of the holidays of other churches,” said Leonard Bruguier, Director of the Institute of Native American Studies at the University of South Dakota. “We’re modern day people who exist as Christians and as a mix.”

Until the 1930s, the United States tried to ban Native American religious rituals, including the Ghost Dance, Sun Dance and peyote cult.

In 1978, Congress passed the American Indian Religious Freedom Act. Religious practices, once considered on the verge of disappearing, were revived.

One of these practices is the Sun Dance.

“Sun Dances are not exclusive to Lakota/Dakota. Many, many tribes or nations perform the Sun Dance with their own origins, own versions,” Valerian Three Irons, Native American club adviser at SDSU, said.

Three Irons, an adviser for the College of Nursing and a coordinator for the International Partnership for Service Learning, has led Sun Dances for many years and describes the ceremony as a time to celebrate life.

“Many of our Sun Dances are a story. It’s a story about creation and a story about life,” Three Irons said.

According to Three Irons, the ceremony, held between spring time and harvest time, can be led by a tribal event or by an individual who has had a vision or right to conduct Sun Dances.

Sun Dances are not the only ceremony performed in the religion. Ghost dances, sweat lodges, vision quests and pipe ceremonials are also intrinsic parts of the religion that various American Indian tribes take part in.

Bruguier, a member of the Yankton Sioux Tribe, is a Christian and a member of the American Indian church. He also carries the pipe with which he participates in a pipe ceremony called Inipi.

Bruguier, a Vietnam veteran, said that he carries the pipe to pray and symbolize the warrior in himself.

“The churches, the pipe, and the Native American church affirms your spirituality,” Bruguier said.

Spirituality is an important part of Native American religion. According to “100 Questions, 500 Nations,” many American Indians believe in a Great Spirit that reveals itself through nature and influences all life.

“We look at everything having spirit, allow things to be and be comfortable with who we are and what we are,” Three Irons said.

Many American Indians do not consider their spiritual practices a religion, nor do they rely on an institution to worship.

Instead their beliefs are an integral part of daily life.

“Many of us follow the small ritual of greeting the sun in the morning and saying your daily prayer,” Three Irons said.

According to “100 Questions, 500 Nations,” prayers have taken a variety of forms, including songs and dance and acts such as sprinkling tobacco or corn meal.

“I communicate with the creator, being thankful to the creator for giving a new sunrise and to remember special people,” Bruguier said.

When Native American Day approaches, Bruguier said that he will also give thanks.

“I’ll be thankful to the creator giving me another day and I will ask the creator for peace and I will think of the children,” Bruguier said. “That’s what I will be really thinking on Oct. 14.”
