“The Ugly American” portrays Americans as ignorant, ethnocentric, and corrupt in this multi-million-copy bestseller by William Lederer and Eugene Burdick. This is a fiction story about Americans involved in foreign policies during the fight against communism in Asia. The title “ugly American” signifies how the Americans treat the natives. They all come across as arrogant and selfish. Many of the ambassadors and military officials sent into the country are only there to fulfill their own needs and don’t bother to learn the native culture or ways of life, much less interact with the people of the area.

Throughout the book, Americans are treated to first-class treatment, while the native people live their simple lives. There are a few Americans in this story that drastically improve the lives of the natives simply by learning their language and teaching them simple solutions to their problems.

I would recommend this book to anyone interested in politics or foreign affairs. I felt the book was well-written and painted a clear picture of how many American officials act when they are placed in another country. Americans tend to be self-absorbed or ethnocentric. I feel the book reiterates this point. After reading this story, perhaps we as Americans will stop to take a look around and learn to appreciate other cultures and ways of life. We must work to understand and learn from each other.

This edge-of-your-seat thriller was an exciting book cover to cover. It all begins when Robert Langdon, a Harvard symbology professor, receives a strange call in the middle of the night, summoning him to an emergency meeting at one of the top research facilities in the world.

The adventure then continues as Langdon follows clues around Vatican City and Rome to stop an estranged, age-old, underground organization, the Illuminati. This group’s mission is to destroy the ties between science and religion. The organization has threatened to kill four cardinals during conclave, the election of the new pope. Langdon, along with a young lady that works for the research facility, must follow the clues put in Vatican City and Rome centuries ago to save the cardinals’ lives.

There are several twists in the book that keep a person guessing. Every turn of the page held a new clue or secret to the path that’s easy to follow along, even if you don’t have any history in art. I feel Dan Brown did an excellent job at throwing in a history lesson, along with suspense, to make this book a must-read.

“Angels and Demons” is the prequel to the number-one New York Times best seller, the “The Da Vinci Code.” Brown said it best when he said, “Whatever your taste in art, you certainly will find the usual plethora of puzzles, arcane history, cliff-hangers, and unexpected twists.”

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a thrilling book with turns and twists throughout the story line. I now look forward to reading the sequel, “The Da Vinci Code.”

The South Dakota Department of Transportation has finalized its decision to match grant funds up to $12,000 per school year for the next three years for the Safe Ride program.

“Funding is pretty much secure now,” said Students’ Association president Alex Halbach.

The program was depending on this grant money to run the program. Safe Ride is expected to cost between $16,000 and $20,000 per school year. Some of the money to run the bus will come from local businesses and the rest, up to $12,000 a year, will come from the Department of Transportation.

Halbach said since nothing like this has ever been tried in Brookings, no one is quite sure exactly how much the program will cost. But, after the six-week pilot program, the proposal committee will have a better idea of the expenses.

The program will be re-evaluated at the end of the pilot program to determine if the community is utilizing the bus service. They will be looking for feedback once Safe Ride gets underway to better service the community.

“We’re going to make changes and get feedback as we move forward,” said former SA president Ryan Brunner.

The focus of the Safe Ride program is to keep drunk drivers off the roads, considering Brookings has one of the highest drunk driving ratings in the country. The proposal committee has been working on this project for years, and feels they finally have a decent starting place.

“We’re excited to see results and to see if the program will be utilized,” said Halbach.

The proposal calls for a driver and a monitor on the ride, as it travels around town picking people up at the designated stops. The route includes six stops and takes a half an hour to complete. The bus can hold between 20 and 25 people, and is free for students with their college ID. The ride costs $5 for everyone else. The trial program begins this Thursday, March 30.

SDSU students and the Brookings community will soon have an alternate ride home after a night out on the town.

Students Association (SA) has teamed up with the Leadership Brookings class, Brookings Area Transit Authority (BATA) and SDSU Student Health to offer a safe ride home.

“We’re concerned about the personal safety of everyone in the community, so that makes having a safe ride a necessity,” said former SA President Ryan Brunner.

Starting March 30, a six-week trial program will run Thursday through Saturday from 9 p.m. until 3 a.m., with only drop-offs between 1 a.m. and 3 a.m. The “Safe Ride” bus will travel a constant loop in two 15-minute intervals, with stops along the way. The entire route takes half an hour to complete.

“The schedule provides consistency for someone riding down or going home. They know when the bus will be there,” said Brunner.

The bus can hold between 20 and 25 people, with a driver and a monitor on the ride. The monitor is there for safety and security reasons. The ride will be free for SDSU students and $5 dollars for anyone else.

The program began due to concern over the high number of drunk drivers on Brookings roads. In 2001, Brookings was no. 1 per capita for DUI arrests. In 2003, Brookings ranked third in the nation for drunk driving. The proposal committee believes this is due, in part, to South Dakota’s extreme weather and long walking distance from residential areas to downtown.

“We are promoting responsible choices in hopes of reducing DUIs, vandalism to the community and altercations that occur downtown after the bars close their doors,” said Jenna Rowe, a member of the Leadership Brookings class.

Even though the program is intended to give students and community members a safe ride home from the bars, underclassmen under the age of 21 can also utilize the bus services.

The proposal for “Safe Ride” is estimated to cost between $16,000 and $20,000 a school year. The program will receive funds from downtown businesses wanting to advertise. That money will then be doubled in the form of match grants from the federal government and the South Dakota Department of Transportation.

The trial program will be evaluated throughout the rest of the semester through surveys and questionnaires. Brunner said more information will be distributed on how to submit suggestions once the program begins.

“We’re going to make changes and get feedback as we move forward,” said Brunner.

The proposal committee hopes that this form of transportation will limit the number of DUIs and arrests made in Brookings County and provide a safe ride home.

“It’s going to take communication, coordination, and cooperation for what we’re trying to do, but I’m excited about it and I hope it’s supported by students and the community,” said Brenda Schweitzer, a BATA representative.

The bus will stop at each stop every 30 minutes. One bus runs both the Yellow and Blue Line. The Blue Line is a 15-minute cycle and the Yellow Line is a 15-minute cycle.

Fifteen years ago, Rebecca Freilinger thought things couldn’t get any worse. After separating from her husband, Freilinger struggled to make ends meet. But the bills kept piling up. Paying for rent, gas, car insurance and daycare for her two-year-old boy forced the pregnant woman to work 60 hours a week just to pay the bills.

“We were managing. Macaroni and cheese was good,” said Freilinger with a smile.

But the situation got worse when Freilinger found out her young son had a terrible infection. Doctor’s bills were very expensive, and antibiotics for the bacterial infection took every penny the family had for rent and food.

When negotiations with the landlord turned sour, Freilinger packed up her belongings and moved into a friend’s house.

Throughout the next several months, the two moved several times, still unable to afford a place of their own. Governmental officials told Freilinger she did not qualify for government assistance. After living in her car for a few weeks, Freilinger decided there was only one alternative left. With all of her resources exhausted, Freilinger and her son moved into the local homeless shelter.

Freilinger hated the shelter because she said she never felt safe, and the people made her uncomfortable.”You just never knew if your items were going to be safe, or if someone was going to molest your kid,” said Freilinger.

She felt as if she had hit the bottom of the barrel, homeless and alone.

A short time later, things began to look up for the family when she got word governmental housing had come through. Just a month before she gave birth, Freilinger moved into her own place.”That really strengthened my belief that miracles can happen,” she said.

Deciding that she wanted to take control of her life and turn things around, Freilinger took out various loans and applied for numerous scholarships. She then began her education at St. Cloud State University with intentions to join the nursing field.

She was working full time and going to school when another miracle snuck her way. A sociology professor was working on a grant for ethnic studies, and needed an assistant. Freilinger accepted a job testing program objectives for the professor. From there, Freilinger decided to pursue a degree in sociology.

Freilinger eventually moved to Brookings, and now works for the sociology department at SDSU. She felt that this would be a good place to raise her two children.

Freilinger remains optimistic about the future, and plans to travel to South Africa next year to write her dissertation on miners and racial oppression.

“I have hope for the future. I have high hopes of becoming a professor, and making a difference in other’s lives,” said Freilinger.

Ages aside, young and old alike indulge several times a week in tanning. People tan for different reasons and durations, but one thing seems the same: people tan because they want to look and feel better about themselves.

Tanning has several advantages. It can clear up minor cases of acne or boost a bad mood. It can also be a time to relax, a way to diminish the winter blues or improve self-esteem. Tanning can even aid in managing weight by stimulating the thyroid gland that boosts metabolism.

Year Round Brown, Inc. tanning specialist Andrea Hoogendoorn said, “Tanning makes people feel more confident and makes them look and feel better.”

SDSU student Justin VanderVorste started tanning for a trip, among other reasons.

“The girls like it, it’s more appealing,” said VanderVorste.

Since tanning in South Dakota is not a year-round outdoor activity, many SDSU students and Brookings residents are turning to indoor tanning beds to give them a satisfactory tan all year round, even during the blistering cold winters.

The three tanning salons in Brookings that work to help people accomplish this task of keeping a healthy, gorgeous tan all year round are Year Round Brown, 2nd Glance Salon and Spa, and Power Tan. All three salons have trained and certified tanning specialists on duty to help customers pick lotions and bed intensities that work for their skin types, and answer any questions they may have about tanning.

A tan is the result of ultraviolet rays hitting the surface of the skin, causing melanin in the skin to oxidize and turn brown. To develop a tan, one must first get a base tan. One can obtain this by tanning every other day for about a week, anywhere from eight to ten minutes, depending on skin type. Tanning minutes can then be increased gradually to either maintain or darken an existing tan. To maintain a base tan, one to three tanning sessions are recommended, along with continuous application of moisture. If the skin is not kept moisturized, the top layer of skin will shed, shedding both your tan and your wallet.

Certified tanning specialist Adrianne Hemerka said, “The key to tanning is moisturization and education.”

Some tanning lotions contain special ingredients that speed up the tanning process. Lotion use is said to help a person tan about 60 percent faster than not using any type of lotion. Many tanning lotions also contain bronzers, which make the tan stand out even darker. The lotions are also made to combat dry skin and prevent wrinkles that are associated from overexposure to UVB rays. Some of the best lotions on the market today contain ingredients such as extreme tanning catalysts. Tanning specialists can help beginners pick out a lotion that best suits their skin types.

Along with lotion, eyewear is especially important. Although the use of goggles in a tanning bed is not required in South Dakota, several states do have laws regarding the use of eyewear when tanning. The absence of protective eyewear while tanning can cause severe damage to the eye such as infections, night vision loss or permanent pink eye.

If tanning beds aren’t for you, Hemerka suggests using UV-free spray-on tans or lotions, which last around three to four days. Magic Tan, a spray-on tan, is a misty spray that usually stays for about a week. The UV-free spray tans and lotions are recommended for people prone to skin cancer or women who are pregnant.

According to Hemerka, tanning in moderation is a time to relax and have a little “you” time. When done right, tanning can be a self-esteem booster, along with a health benefit.

In the age of plastic surgery and self-improvement, people everywhere are always searching for ways to better their appearance. A person’s smile is no exception. From movie stars to the average Joe on the street, everyone strives to make a good first impression. A smile is one thing people tend to remember, so students and professionals alike are aspiring to make a good impression with dazzling whites.

Due to excess consumption of caffeine and sugar nowadays, some are resorting to having their teeth whitened, either professionally or at home using whitening kits. This could be your guide to whiter teeth by talking about the most current whitening methods available, along with how long it takes to get those pearly whites just the right color. According to Glamour magazine, the sale of drugstore whiteners in 2003 hit $334 million dollars and sales continue to skyrocket.

There are several methods to gaining and maintaining those pearly whites. One way to get those yellowish teeth a few shades lighter is to buy an at-home kit. This could be either whitening strips or gels. The strips are applied for several hours at a time, for a series of weeks.

The gel kit works much the same way in that it comes with a plastic tray in which your teeth soak in a hydrogen peroxide gel for a two-hour time block over a two-week span.

“I’ve tried Crest Whitening Strips and I like them. However, I wish it were more time efficient,” says Lindsey Hansen, an apparel merchandising junior.

These two methods are the cheapest for teeth whitening, ranging from $20 to $40 dollars. The results last anywhere from six months to a year. But, dentists warn these at-home kits may cause some irritation to the gums.

One method that may be considered an at-home alternative to whiter teeth would include whitening toothpaste. But, toothpaste that claims to whiten teeth does not actually dye your teeth. Instead, the toothpaste removes pellicle, a film that accumulates on the teeth, preventing stains. Although whitening toothpaste prevents the yellowing of teeth, it does not make too noticeable a difference.

A bit more expensive, yet safer, alternative to at-home whitening kits is going to a dentist to get the job done. Much like the at-home kits, the teeth soak in a tray of hydrogen peroxide for 30 to 60 minutes, depending on how white the patient would like their teeth to become. The dentist then applies heat to the teeth, breaking the gel down, whitening the teeth to the desired shade of whiteness. This process shows immediate results, and lasts a couple years.

For those looking for a more permanent, yet much more expensive, method of whitening their teeth, one might consider bonding or veneers. Bonding teeth consists of putting an enamel-like material over the teeth, totaling about two hours in the dentist’s chair. It could cost anywhere from $300 to $700 dollars a tooth, and lasts about two years.

The most extreme form of teeth whitening includes putting on veneers. They are custom-made porcelain shaped to fit your teeth exactly. The impressions of the teeth are made and attached permanently to the patient’s shaved teeth. The veneers last about 15 years. The price? Five hundred to 2000 bucks a tooth!

Because of the price and the time hassle, many college students, like Lisa Goeden, don’t whiten their teeth.

“I’d never do it. I’d probably just wear darker lipstick instead,” says Goeden.

To maintain healthy white teeth in between whitening and cleanings, be sure to eat plenty of fruit, and less sugar. Tap water is also good for your teeth because of the fluoride in it. Don’t smoke, and remember to brush and floss your teeth every day. These simple tips will keep your teeth more healthy and whiter all year long.

Anyone who has access to the Internet has endless buying power at their fingertips. Online purchases are becoming a part of modern day civilization. These purchases are predicted by many to take off and expand even more in the near future.

Some people find the Internet is a much cheaper, easier and time efficient way to shop without having to leave the comfort of their own home.

Yet others feel the Internet is not a safe enough domain to place their valuable checking or credit account information.

Big Pros and Scary Cons

Even with the speculations and wariness some buyers may feel, Internet business is booming rapidly; so rapidly, in fact, that Epaynews.com predicts online sales in the U.S. will reach about $117 billion by 2008.

Auction sites such as EBay and Overstock are gaining popularity, as well as nearly every brand name store imaginable.

Even though online purchases are increasing every year, some consumers are still hesitant to purchase online. Occupational therapy sophomore Monique Ratigan says she only shops online about once a month because of the risks involved.

“I am scared of using my credit card online. I also don’t like shopping online because I’m worried things won’t come on time or won’t fit,” Ratigan says.

According to the National Internet Fraud Watch Information Center, the average loss to fraud victims was $895 in 2003, up $368 from the previous year.

Seniors aged 60 or older consist of 8% of fraud victims in 2004, and usually get stung by organizations posing as lottery clubs, information and adult services and Nigerian money offers.

To practice safety with online purchases, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has issued a list of safely tips. First, the FTC suggests using a secure browser that complies with security standards such as Secure Sockets Layer (SSL). The browser scrambles the information entered on the Web site so hackers cannot easily intercept confidential information from consumers.

Most computers come with these browsers, but if it is not included with your computer, many are available to download online for free.

The FTC also suggests shopping with known companies. These companies strive to keep their Web sites secure and will work to maintain security in order to gain or retain your business.

When unsure whether or not a site is secure, the FTC suggests requesting a paper brochure with a list of the online-company’s products.

Keep your passwords private. Be creative when coming up with a password, and don’t share it with anyone. Use a combination of letters and numbers to create a password only you would know.

Using birth dates, addresses or telephone numbers are generally not advised because it makes it much easier for a hacker to break into your account.

Pay with a credit card. Under the Fair Credit Billing Act, a consumer has the right to dispute charges made on their account under certain circumstances. Payment can even be withheld during the deliberations.

Also, if a credit card is used illegally to make a purchase, the card-holder will only have to pay a maximum of $50 dollars in damages in most cases.

The FTC also suggests keeping a record of your online purchases. When an order is placed, a confirmation page that includes a list of purchases along with a confirmation number and contact information is mailed to your email account. In the event of a mix-up, this information is crucial.

I Like It!

There are several advantages to buying online, which could be why the market is growing so quickly. With online banking, the consumer can surf the Internet, comparing prices much easier than driving around town to price hunt. Internet shopping can be done at any time because the Internet is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week and all purchases can be done from the comfort of your home.

Disabled people who may not be able to travel or move around easily, can take advantage of online shopping which makes the internet more accessible to them by making it possible to order from their home. Online shopping can make it easier to find that specialized item most retail stores around town do not carry. Also, there is no pressure from persistent salesclerks or long lines with online shopping.

I Don’t Like It!

With the advantages come the disadvantages. With online shopping, the consumer can only see a picture of an item they are contemplating. By not being able to see the actual object, many online consumers complain they felt an item they purchased was misrepresented.

“I like to see what I am getting before I buy it,” says freshman Zach Kambel.

Some may even see problems with security. Several consumers still worry about giving out personal information over the web, for fear of being hacked or having their identity stolen.

Penny Brandt, a junior family and consumer science student, feels that shopping online isn’t nearly as good as going to a store, because you don’t feel the instant gratification of buying something right then and there.

“Online purchasing is easily accessible but by the time you get what you ordered, you’ve forgotten you’ve ordered it so it’s like getting a present,” Brandt says.

It may take weeks to receive a purchase in the mail.

The New Way – Ebay

EBay has transformed the way consumers shop online. EBay was the first major online bidding Web site, with a myriad of objects being added or sold every day. EBay is free to use, but has no problem bringing in profits.

According to the IT Facts Web site, 95 million EBay buyers sold 7.5 billion worth of goods in 2003, for a profit of 2.7 billion for the auction site. Potential buyers comb the Web site either by category or specific keywords to find objects anywhere from pictures to wishing sticks and everything in between.

To buy an item, objects are put up for a minimum bid by an independent individual or company. Potential buyers then bid on the object until the allotted time ends. The person with the highest bid at the end of the auction wins that object.

The seller and buyer then arrange a place for the object to be sent and the buyer can pay the seller by mailing a money order or using PayPal.

PayPal is a service that allows online buyers to deposit money directly into a seller’s personal PayPal account, with a small fee to the seller. Few businesses will accept personal checks.

Along with auction Web sites, one of the most common online purchases Internet users make are hotel reservations.

The IT Facts Web site suggests that between 50 and 75 percent of hotel reservations were made online in 2003.

Selling Books Online

Along with clothes and music online, many students take advantage of textbook buyback web sites. These sites are set up to buy old books that students either couldn’t sell back to the school bookstore or wouldn’t get much even if they did.

Sophomore Kiel Wirth says he sold his used textbooks online. Wirth says he didn’t get much money for them, but it was better than nothing.

“I sold my books on eBay because the campus bookstore wasn’t buying that book back anymore,” says Wirth.

Sites like TextBookBuyer.com and BooksIntoCash.com are set up so a student can type in the book’s ISBN number (located on the back cover) and get a quote as to how much the site is willing to give on that particular book.

Some Web sites, including the two mentioned previously, offer free shipping so all the student has to do is pack up their old books and send them on their way. These sites promise a quick check of compensation in the mail.

Online Taxes

The issue of taxing online purchases remains a controversial subject with lawmakers and consumers alike.

According to AmericanCityandCountry.com, there is not currently a tax on access services such as America Online or EarthLink, nor is there sales tax on items bought off the Internet.

The federal government has put a ban on the taxation of access services until 2007 in most states. The movement for the taxation of access services argues that not having a tax grants greater access to the internet, while others argue the services must be taxed to reimburse the government for revenue losses.

Sales tax is also a heated discussion topic among lawmakers this year. Presently, there is no sales tax on items bought on the Internet. State and local governments protest the $16 billion a year that is lost on uncollected sales tax on items purchased online.

So, instead of waiting for Congress to come up with a solution, 32 states have joined together to form the Streamlined Sales Tax Project, which is designed to establish uniform definitions for taxable goods and a model for collecting sales tax across state lines, as described by AmericanCityandCountry.com.

Senior broadcast major Jamie Mack has no problem with the implementation of a sales tax on items purchased online.

“I think they should because all taxes, sales or any other kind of tax, help to fund this country and I think they are very necessary,” he says.

Landscape architecture junior, Jeremy Hoffman, disagrees.

“It’s cheaper the way it is now, and I don’t want that to change,” Hoffman says.

Whether or not the Legislature implements a sales tax over online purchases, sales are continuing to rise. With busy lifestyles and overcrowded department stores and super centers, many feel shopping from the comfort of their home is an advantage.

Many students interviewed say they see online shopping becoming more popular and well-utililized in the future.

Students and members of the community will have the chance to get a little exercise while supporting a good cause.

Air Force ROTC members are hosting their second annual Finish Line Cancer Walk/Run. The event will be held on campus April 9, with registration beginning in front of DePuy Military Hall at 10 a.m. The main event will begin at 11 a.m. The course will consist of a three-mile run or a one-mile walk, either individually or as a team. Everyone is welcome to participate.

The registration fee is $15 dollars and includes a T-shirt, along with a free lunch and live music during the walk/run event. Proceeds from the event will support the fight against cancer and will help cancer patients and their families.

Every day, a young man wakes up, thankful to be alive.

No one would have thought that Matt Hoover would be so healthy and happy, ready to make a difference in people’s lives. Twenty-three years ago in St. Louis, Mo., he was born three months premature, weighing only a pound and a half. Hoover was so small that he had to be dressed in Cabbage Patch clothes because he wasn’t big enough to wear normal-sized baby clothes.

His parents were told that their son had a 50 percent chance of living, and throughout the first few hours of his life, he was pronounced dead three times, once for about an hour and a half. They were also told that even if he did survive being born so premature, the odds were against him. Doctors predicted that Hoover had a 96 percent chance of being mentally handicapped.

Once, while hospitalized under 24-hour surveillance, the nurse accidentally gave Hoover too much oxygen, causing many problems for the young child. To save his life, the blood was squeezed from his feet. Even to this day, Hoover has no feeling in his feet. But he doesn’t mind because he can wear his favorite shoes all-year-round – sandals.

Because Hoover was born so premature, his lungs were not fully developed, making it hard for him to breathe. Doctors had no choice but to cut a hole into the baby’s trachea. The emergency procedure left scar tissue in the delicate area. The procedure created Hoover’s trademark today, his husky voice.

“The only thing wrong with me is my voice, and that’s not wrong, it’s me. It makes me unique,” he says.

Hoover had to work with a speech pathologist until fifth grade, learning how to talk normally. While growing up, fellow students would often ask him about his voice. He frequently got asked if he was fighting a cold. Kids would tease him, saying that he had two belly buttons because of the small hole in his throat.

Beating all odds, he did survive and is completely healthy today. Hoover says he could not have done it without his family and faith. He remains close to his family and attends church services every week.

“I owe the Lord everything. Without him and the support of my parents, I wouldn’t be here. Now, I want to make a difference in people’s lives,” Hoover says.

He is doing just that by working as a volunteer for Special Olympics with the track and field competition. He has been giving his time for the past eight years, and says he loves doing it.

One moment from the Special Olympics has burned a memory in Hoover’s heart, proving he is making a difference. Several years back a lady approached him during an event with thanks, saying he was the only person that could make her underprivileged son talk or laugh. Hoover says that was an emotional moment for him because 23 years ago, he could have ended up the same way.

Currently, Hoover plans to graduate with a journalism degree this April, and will return next year to begin work on a master’s degree in mass communications and journalism. Hoover is employed with the athletic department on campus and enjoys his job. He works in the Sport’s Information Department writing sports releases, media guides and statistics. He hopes to become a sports information director one day, preferably in the Midwest so he can be close to his family. He has high hopes and aspirations and is willing to work hard to achieve them. Hoover says he strives for perfection and feels content only when he feels he has accomplished something.

Hoover’s hobbies include hanging out with friends, all kinds of sports, spending time with family and watching college football.

Just 23 years ago, a family anxiously waited to hear whether or not their young child would survive. Well he did, and is as happy and healthy as can be today. No one knows what the future will bring, but for Hoover, the future looks promising.
