You may recognize the man in this photograph. His name is Hunter S. Thompson, the drug-loving reporter famous for his unique style of journalism known as “Gonzo journalism.”
Thompson wrote the famous book, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas which eventually turned into a popular cult film.
Thompson was incredibly gifted as a journalist and author but he could never overcome his addiction to psychedelic drugs and alcohol. He committed suicide in 2005 at the age of 67.
This is an excerpt from his suicide note:
“No More Games. No More Bombs. No More Walking. No More Fun. No More Swimming. 67. That is 17 years past 50. 17 more than I needed or wanted. Boring. I am always bitchy. No Fun8212; for anybody. 67. You are getting Greedy. Act your old age. Relax8212; This won’t hurt.”
This is not meant to be a depressing column.
Mr. Thompson may not have lived a virtuous life in the eyes of most people. He used drugs to seek out the meaning of his life, and “the American dream.”
A synonym of virtue is “goodness.” This week, consider what your actions tell others about your character. And remember, the world is a better place with a genuine “you,” than a pretend model citizen.
