New tailgating policy gets mixed reviews from fans, athletic department
Tailgating is part of the overall game experience, administrators say, but throw out the trash. Tailgaters were out in full force on Sept. 18 prior to SDSU’s home opener against Illinois State, creating a festive atmosphere around Coughlin-Alumni Stadium. Many students congregated in the student lot north of the HPER Center and seemed to be enjoying themselves. Students conversed with each other and played yard games.
Kriens: Sports hype, reality clash
As football fans, we wait all offseason for a new season to begin. It gives us hope that this year will be the year when our favorite team finally wins it all and gives us a lifetime of memories over five short months. But then the actual games get played. In baseball, they say that it is a “marathon,’ not a “sprint.’ In football, it is a 50-yard dash to the finish that is over before it barely began.
Men?s golf finishes 10th at Kansas Invitational
Jacks golfers finish 10th out of 15 teams with sophomore David Smith finishing in a respectable 15th place individually. The SDSU men’s golf team finished the final round of play at the Kansas Invitational on Tuesday. This was the second tournament of the year and there is room for improvement, stability being a main concern for the young team.
Jacks top Coyotes in four sets
After opening the day with a loss to host North Dakota State, the South Dakota State volleyball team sent South Dakota to its 13th straight loss with a 3-1 win on Saturday at the Doublewood Inn Classic in Fargo, N.D. The Jackrabbits won by the set scores of 25-23, 25-18, 19-25 and 25-23 gives the Jacks a 5-6 record overall and a 1-2 mark at the weekend tournament. The Coyotes fall to 2-14 with the loss.

Ag Museum to host course on South Dakota wine industry
The short course “Grapes to Wine” at the South Dakota State Agricultural Heritage Museum will focus on new grape varieties and the wine industry in South Dakota. The course will be held at the museum on the South Dakota State University campus in Brookings from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on three Thursday evenings: Sept. 23, Sept. 30 and Oct. 7.
SDSU names 2010 distinguished alumni
Seven alums and a long-time faculty member form the Class of 2010, distinguished people who will be honored by the South Dakota State University Alumni Association.

Mortar Board chapter recognized nationally
South Dakota State University’s Mortar Board chapter, Sigma Lambda Sigma, was recognized for its achievements this summer at the 2010 Mortar Board National Conference held in Chicago the end of July. Sigma Lambda Sigma was one of 77 chartered collegiate chapter winners receiving the Silver Torch Award. Across the nation 238 chapters competed for the award.
SDSU pharmacy faculty member elected to national board
South Dakota State University faculty member Tom Johnson has been elected to the Board of Directors of the American Society of Health System Pharmacists. Johnson, professor of pharmacy practice in the College of Pharmacy at SDSU, will begin his three-year term on the 12-member board June, 2011.
Lafrentz to give senior music recital at SDSU September 26
Janelle (Lovlien) Lafrentz will give her senior vocal recital on Sunday, Sept.. 26, at 4 p.m. in Peterson Recital Hall at Lincoln Music Center on the South Dakota State University campus. Lafrentz will perform works by composers Haydn, Dvorák, Ravel, DeFalla, John Jacob Niles and Kurt Weill. Most of her selections, she said, contain a folk-style flair that listeners are sure to enjoy.
