SDSU coordinator of nuclear education named

Associate Professor Robert McTaggart has been named coordinator of nuclear education at South Dakota State University as the school launches its new minor in nuclear engineering this fall. The new option for SDSU students is being administered in the College of Engineering through the physics department in cooperation with the mechanical and electrical engineering departments.

Dawkins named SDSU September Employee of the Month

Rodney Dawkins has been named September Career Service Employee of the Month at South Dakota State University. A reception in his honor will be held Tuesday, Sept., 21, in room 214 of the Pugsley Center from 10 to 11 p.m. SDSU President David Chicoine will make a presentation at 10:30 p.m.

Film Society moves to Biostress Lab for fall screenings

The 2010 SDSU Film Society’s Autumn Film Series kicked off at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 14, in the Northern Plains Biostress Lab, room 103 with “Out in the Silence.” The 2009 documentary records the consequences of a same-sex wedding announcement in a conservative, rural community newspaper. Joining the viewing of the film is the director Joe Wilson. The film is cosponsored by American Civil Liberties Union of South Dakota and the Brookings Human Rights Committee.

Women?s book club to focus on fitness

A book club8212;free and focused on fitness8212;is looking for a few more members before its Sept. 28 kick-off. The program, called Fit Minded Coronary Artery Disease Survivors, promotes physical activity and wellness in women who have been diagnosed with coronary artery disease or a form of cardiovascular disease as well as women who have high blood pressure or high cholesterol.

Textbook prices and information go public

Congress steps up to help students and faculty get the textbook lowdown. Buying textbooks is never easy on students’ wallets, but Congress is working to make the cost more bearable. In July 2010 a Federal law was put in place that requires textbook publishers to have a variety of information available so faculty members can make the best decisions when selecting course materials.

Faculty reviews dismissal

The reality of possible academic censure caused the SDSU Academic Senate to review situation of the termination of a tenured professor and plan to take action. The SDSU Academic Senate decided Sept. 14 to take an active role in the situation involving former Extension Entomologist Mike Catangui and his recent termination.

Medical marijuana supporters are ready to try again for legalization in South Dakota. Brookings supporters recently displayed their stance.
