Home: where the hits are

The women’s softball team put on a show April 15 as they scuffled against rival in-state school, the University of South Dakota. The contests were the first games played between the Jacks and Coyotes in almost six years. SDSU did not disappoint, as the Jacks won two close games with scores of 5-2 in the first game and 2-1 in eight innings in the second game.

Jacks pillage Gophers in border battle

The Jackrabbit baseball team has swept a Big-Ten opponent. Check that off the list of noteworthy accomplishments for the team this season. SDSU (21-11) overcame a one-run deficit in the seventh inning with clutch hitting and quality enough relief pitching, beating Minnesota (14-23) at Erv Huether Field 12-11 on April 20.

Tennis losses bring goals for next season

The South Dakota State women’s tennis team had its season cut short this past weekend in Las Vegas, and it was not without drama. Things started off well for the Jacks as they defeated Oakland 4-2 for the first time in school history, kicking off the Summit League cluster April 15.

Trio leads men’s golf to seventh place finish

Freshman Greg Fehrman cracked the top 20 at the Hawkeye-TaylorMade/Adidas Invitational hosted by Iowa from April 16 to 18. Fehrman’s 54-hole total was 222, which placed him in a tie for 19th. That was good enough to lead the Jacks to a seventh place overall finish.

Dancing toward the stars’ finale

SDSU’s third season of Dancing with the Stars continues to please and surprise students as it heads toward the finale. The first episode saw all six stars dance with their respective partners, allowing all to show their best ’80s dance. However, the judges and the students voted and the second week saw off the star Brian McNeill and his partner, Kimberly Graff.

Race keeps students running for 24 hours

One-hundred eighty sleep-deprived, cranky, sore, color-coded, “jacked up” college students searching for a duck dressed as a pirate is just one of the many crazy things you might have seen during this year’s Residence Hall Association 24-hour Jacked-Up Rabbit Race.

Something Stereo brings unique sounds

Battle of the Bands returns this year with similar faces, new talent and local bands. Seven bands will perform for the SDSU student body: The Outlet, Enola Mai, Something Stereo, More than Enough, Foley, the Tinderbox and Paradise Fears. The show is free for SDSU students and costs $5 for non-students.

Columnist interviews guitarist

This week, I’d like to introduce you to what I like to call my “hometown heroes”. They’re called Shut Up and Deal. They come from my neck of the woods back east. I recently did an interview with their guitarist, Paul LaBosky. We talked about the band, their time on Warped Tour and their upcoming album.

Brown Hall trio creates own music

After two years of mixtapes and basement tracks, Sam Phan, Sidney Fox, and Lj Delacruz have refined their sound together as artists to form James Smith. “We are college kids, just like everybody else here and even when we just make beats without words, we do us and we don’t try and be anything that we are not,” said Sidney Fox.

Arrest made for recent rape

Brookings Police Chief Jeff Miller says an arrest has been made in a rape case. Miller did not immediately release details early Wednesday. A 24-year-old woman was kidnapped, raped and robbed in the city early Tuesday. Authorities said the suspect matched the description of the suspect in two recent sexual assaults on the South Dakota State University campus.
