Women’s tennis boasts some success in Vegas

The SDSU women’s tennis team kicked off its 2010 Summit League season by taking part in a two-day, three-match cluster in Las Vegas over the weekend.

On March 19, the Jacks started the day with a 7-0 sweep of Centenary with No. 2-5 singles winning 6-0, 6-0 and No. 1 and 2 doubles winning 8-0.

In the second match of the day, Western Illinois defeated SDSU 4-1. The lone Jackrabbit point came at No. 3 singles, as Megan McDougall defeated Claire Griffin when she retired down 4-1 in the first set. In No. 2 doubles, the team of Bryna Nasenbeny and Bethany Goeden tied their opponents 5-5 before play was suspended.

On March 20, the Jacks wrapped up the cluster, losing 7-0 to Oral Roberts.

SDSU’s best chance to win was in doubles play, in which No. 2 Nasenbeny and Goeden lost a 7-6 decision before the match was called. Nellie Bloomberg and Carrie Jansen nearly pulled out a win before losing 8-6 in No. 3 doubles.

In singles, No. 1 Nasenbeny lost 6-3, 6-1, while Katie Elifson lost 6-1, 6-4 in No. 2 singles.

“Overall, I thought that we played really well,” said SDSU head coach Don Hanson. “We won the match that we thought we would and were competitive in the other two. If you look at it in terms of winning, it may not be considered a success, but we are continuing to improve every match.”

The Jacks (4-12) have a week off before returning to the court at St. Cloud State on April 1.
