The South Dakota State women’s tennis team did not come away victorious from their two-week spring trip to Orlando, but the Jacks did show improvement as they head into Summit League play.
On March 3, SDSU lost to Lake Superior State 5-4 with No. 2 Bryna Nasenbeny (6-0, 6-1) and No. 6 Nellie Bloomberg (6-0, 6-0) each earning singles and doubles wins.
On March 4, the Jacks were defeated by Mount St. Mary’s 6-1 with the lone win coming from Nasenbeny (7-5, 6-0) in No. 1 singles.
“Bryna played well returning at No. 1 singles, while Carrie Jansen was very competitive,” said SDSU head coach Don Hanson. “We are trying to find a line up to get on track. We are playing competitively but have yet to produce results.”
March 9 would see SDSU get shutout 7-0 vs. Illinois State and on March 10, they lost a 5-2 decision to SIU-Edwardsville with Nasenbeny shining again with a 6-4, 4-6, 10-4 No. 1 singles win. Bloomberg also won her singles match as she defeated her opponent 6-4, 6-2.
“The girls are playing very tough and improving everyday,” Hanson said. “I’m hoping we gain some momentum going into the conference tournament next week.”
The women travel to Las Vegas for a two-day Summit League cluster vs. Centenary, Western Illinois and Oral Roberts starting March 19.
