Oklahoma-bound

The speculation comes to a stop, the anticipation begins. The Jacks are headed to Norman, Okla., to face third-seeded, Big 12 tournament runner-up Oklahoma on March 21. That day will mark the first time a team has stepped on-court and participated in the prestigious NCAA Tournament in its first two years of eligibility.

Column written to warn about possible safety threat, not as attack on Greek Life

In the March 3 issue of The Collegian, I wrote a column about a possible hazing that may have occurred in Brookings. Since that time, I have received both positive and negative feedback from members of the Brookings and SDSU community. The column I wrote described the story that a young man told me of himself and seven other male students being victimized after responding to a poster that was said to be hanging on campus.

2010 census starts off with a bang

Students’ Association senators and city officials are encouraging SDSU students to register for the census in Brookings, an action they say could help entice new stores and bring in federal dollars to the city. Students living off campus should receive their census forms in the mail this week, while those living in the dorms are counted through the agreements they signed with the halls when they moved in.

SA seeks discussion on committee restructuring

S.D. budget decision delayed until end of month

The South Dakota Legislature’s final day of the main run was not as final as usual. Usually by the end of that day, no matter how long it goes into the evening, there is a budget adopted for the next fiscal year. Not so this year. Democrats and Republicans agreed-no small feat for the session-to leave the budget in the Joint Appropriations Committee until legislators return at the end of the month to deal with the governor’s vetoes.

Legislature approves more construction

The ending of South Dakota’s 85th year of legislative sessions gives citizens and SDSU students a reason to be informed about their state and local government. The 2010 legislature has passed bills that will affect students and staff of SDSU. With money being short in the past few years, as a symptom of the downturn of the economy, matters of university spending and budget have been a main topic of discussion at the State Capitol.

There are many possibilities in beginners’ mind, few in experts’

Listen. There was this Japanese guy. He died from cancer. He also wrote this book and titled it Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind. It’s about how you shouldn’t always pay attention to those in authority. “In the beginner’s mind,” he wrote, “there are many possibilities, but in the expert’s mind there are few possibilities.
