SA to put $10K per year toward events
In one of the most heated debates of the year, the Students’ Association voted to put $10,000 each year toward bringing big-name entertainment acts to Brookings. Starting in Fiscal Year 2011, SA will put $10,000 each year into the Major Event Fund, a pool of money used to attract major entertainers.
Anti-Hate Campaign aims at tackling diversity issues
“Every human being, of whatever origin, of whatever station, deserves respect. We must each respect other even as we respect ourselves,” said former UN Secretary General and Burmese diplomat U Thant. As the campus grows in size and becomes more diverse, SDSU’s Residence Hall Association is taking a stand on respect and tolerance by sponsoring the campus-wide Anti-Hate campaign.
SA evaluates changes in committee structure
The structure and number of committees across campus is changing in an attempt to improve governance, efficiency and accountability. On March 1, the Committee Restructuring Task Force, represented by Students’ Association advisers Zeno Wicks and Dan Hansen, presented a vetting document to SA explaining the suggested changes in committee structure.
Housing vacancies cause concern
Finding a place to live is not a simple task. For students it is a long process of comparing numerous options. However, for those trying to rent out the properties, the competition is fierce. Currently, Brookings is overbuilt. Community Development Director Mike Struck estimated that there are a little more than 4,000 rental units, and he said he has heard that between 6 and 8 percent of them are vacant.
Say goodbye to walking; bike sharing will soon be here
A new bike-sharing program will be coming to SDSU in the fall of 2011 to provide students with free bicycle rentals. On March 1, the Students’ Association unanimously passed an ordinance to approve the pilot bike-sharing program. “Bike sharing is a program where students would be able to rent a bicycle and use it for an afternoon and then return it to Information Exchange or their residence hall,” said Matt Tollefson, SA president.
Student escapes injury in quake
“I woke up to the sound of a semi truck heading straight toward my room. When I looked up, I saw the chandelier above my head shaking violently. At first, I had no idea what was going on, and then suddenly I thought to myself, ‘This is an earthquake.’ I quickly jumped out of my bed and ran underneath the doorway in my bedroom to take cover.”
SDSU men to face IPFW in first tournament game
Expectations are higher for the SDSU men’s basketball team heading into the 2010 Summit League Tournament than they were at this time last year. The No.4 Jacks (14-15, 10-8) take on No. 5 IPFW (15-14, 9-9) on Sunday at 6 p.m. at the Sioux Falls Arena in the first round of the conference tournament.
Hockey team to compete for national championship
On the weekend of March 5-7, Blaine, Minn., is hosting the American Collegiate Hockey Association Women’s National Tournament, where the SDSU women’s hockey team will be competing for a championship. SDSU was chosen as one of six teams to compete in the Division II portion of the tournament by a committee made up of coaches across the country.
Brookings county named healthiest in South Dakota, study says
The University of Wisconsin and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation conducted a nation-wide survey to analyze the healthiest counties in each state, and Brookings County was ranked healthiest in South Dakota. Ellie Trautman, HEROH’s adviser, is not surprised that Brookings ranked so successfully and said that Brookings has an excellent school system, attributing the success to the students.
Economy causes scholarship woes
Scholarships during this down time of the national economy are a crucial factor for some students to determine their capability to attend a university or not. This school year, more than 2,700 SDSU students received a portion of the $4.2 million scholarship funds available through the University.
