Ad Club hits big time with video
SDSU’s Advertising Club recently became a finalist in a national advertising competition for 5-Hour Energy. The group created a 30-second video advertisement for the energy drink.
SDSU pageant winners headed for Miss South Dakota
Two of SDSU’s students recently were awarded the titles of Miss SDSU and Miss Brookings and will have the opportunity to go on to compete in the Miss South Dakota pageant. Anne Virgina Koepp, a sophomore broadcast journalism major was awarded the title of Miss SDSU and Jenna Smeenk, a sophomore political science major earned the title of Miss Brookings.
Brookings City Council posts open; election set for April 13
Two current city council members and SDSU’s dean of the College of General Studies will compete for two open city council positions on April 13. Julie Whaley, Jael Thorpe and Keith Corbett are competing for the two positions, which last three years. Polling locations are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on April 13, and absentee voting began on March 25.
Student businesses in running for awards
Let’s face it: Most people in their 20s are usually not in the best economic situation. Whether it’s due to college payments or working a meagerly-paying job that barely pays the bills, there are no “moneybags” among this age group, let alone many trying to start their own business. Yet, at SDSU, there are two such people who now have a chance to make their entrepreneurial dreams a reality after qualifying in an important statewide competition.
Sierra Club starts anti-coal campaign
Emma Dejong SDSU currently uses about 8,000 tons of coal each year to provide heat and hot water to the campus facilities, according to the Sierra Club. Track team has strong showing on road trip
The Jackrabbit track and field teams split up to begin their outdoor season. It was all about the distance runners for the Jacks who were in Columbia, Mo., for the windy Missouri Relays on March 26-27.

Jacks’ standings drop after Cluster
The South Dakota State men’s tennis team kicked off its conference season this past weekend with a three-match, three-day Summit League cluster in Indianapolis. Things got started on March 26 with a 4-0 loss to host IUPUI. Despite being shut out, SDSU had solid performances in No. 1 and No. 2 singles. No. 1 Corey Paluch and No. 2 Justin Pyle each won their first set 7-5 before the match was called.
Softball team bats its way to victory
March 24 marked the home opener for the women’s softball season – the earliest recorded home opener in SDSU softball history – and the Jacks did not disappoint. The softball team figuratively ran away with the game at Jackrabbit Stadium, defeating Dakota State University by a score of 10-2. Eighteen hits and a lone error aided the Jacks to the victory over Dakota State, who ended the game with three hits and two errors.
