Procrastination is for our egos, we know we are not victims

Hypocrisy is my friend. As a pastor, I know I have a good sermon when I feel particularly hypocritical. I assume mine aren’t the only toes which need to be stepped on, or when the occasion warrants, stomped on. Using this standard of judgement, this column should win a Pulitzer.

Evil robotic groundhog army, sinister conspiracy

Well, it’s official. We will have six more weeks of winter, according to the infallible prophecy and supreme word of Punxsutawney Phil. I found myself questioning the origin of the strange tradition that is Groundhog Day. After some diligent research, I’ve concluded the whole thing gives me the creeps and has all the telltale signs of a conspiracy by a secret society to control the world culminating in a war pitting the free humans of the world against an army of robotic groundhogs and groundhog loyalists, led by Punxsutawney Phil.

The Clery Act was signed into federal law in 1990 after Jeanne Clery was raped and murdered in her residence hall at Lehigh University in Pennsylvania. The Clery Act is an example of open-government legislation.

Cold snow days bring back fond memories, columnist says

As a child, I loved winter and snow, simply because I always hoped for snow days at the sight of the first fallen snowflakes. Snow days were those rare, fantastic days when school was canceled and my brother and I were allowed to play outside all day long.

Successful start to 2010

The SDSU equestrian team completed a home weekend sweep of Sacred Heart (Conn.) 13-3 and 6-1 in the first competition of 2010. On Jan. 30, sophomore Meredith Sauer scored an 87 in equitation on the flat for MVP honors. Junior Ashley Marrin was the MVP for SDSU with an equitation over fences score of 80.

Big expectations for ‘Super Sunday’

Well, it is Super Bowl week, and there is a lot of excitement in the air. Of course there will be plenty of parties on Super Bowl Sunday. Thousands of bags of chips will be eaten. Hundreds of pizzas devoured. There will be too many empty beer and pop cans and bottles to count.

Mixed finish against USD, UND on Jan. 30

Another record was added to Jessica Ferley’s résumé on Jan. 30, as the SDSU women’s swimming and diving team took on the University of South Dakota and the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks, N.D.

Jacks drop second conference dual

The SDSU wrestling team lost to the Air Force Falcons 23-12 in their second conference dual of the year Jan. 30 in Frost Arena. SDSU started the dual off on the right foot, as 125 Aaron Pickrel battled Andrew Zwirlein in the night’s first match. Pickrel picked up a takedown in less than one minute into the match and maintained a slight lead for the remaining time to take the win 5-4, giving the Jacks an early 3-0 lead.

Beloved professor, theatre director dies

Beloved professor and director of theatre at SDSU, Nancy Wheeler, 63, died Jan. 26 in Sioux Falls. She was born on April 25, 1946 in Sioux Falls to Marion and Isabel (Fleming) Wheeler; and grew up in Montrose, S.D. During the course of 31 years at SDSU, she directed 22 plays for State University Theatre, not including four experimental theatre productions after initiating the program.

No end of snow in sight

After seeing its all-important shadow, this year’s groundhog confirmed there will be six more weeks of winter. Much of eastern South Dakota is in the position to break the snowfall record by the end of winter, Mike Gillispie, hydrologist for the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, said.
