Accosted at the cost of charityJustine Sjurseth, SDSU student
Like many students at SDSU, most days I find myself passing through the student union either as a thoroughfare or just to grab a quick cup of coffee. However, recently, I find myself dreading walking through the Union because I know that I will be stopped and asked for money. Something I never seem to have, being a college student and all. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not that I don’t believe in supporting the charities such as the Children’s Miracle Network or whatever else people are representing. I just think that it’s extremely annoying to be put on a guilt trip by people I don’t know because I don’t have money to donate to their cause. I was reminded of this past summer when my husband and I went on a cruise to the Bahamas for our honeymoon. When we landed in Nassau for our day in the sun, we were immediately accosted by everyone we made eye contact with in order to try and convince us to buy something we didn’t want. I realize this is how they make their money, but it was aggravating nonetheless. My suggestion would be that people take a slightly less aggressive approach to raising money. Instead of shouting at each passing person to “give us money to ‘free this person from prison’”, maybe just talk civilly to people who show interest? Or heck, have a bake sale, or something you can put a little effort into rather that just flat out asking people to fork it over. Whenever I go through the Union recently, my pace picks up and my gaze drops to the floor and I find myself hoping that no one will notice me. The funny thing is, I notice plenty of other students doing the same thing. Is that what college is about? I personally don’t think so, but hey that’s just my opinion.
Support missing at basketball gamesAdam Deppe, SDSU student
After a recent loss by the Jackrabbits to Western Kentucky, I have realized basketball this year is just not the same at SDSU. I am a dedicated fan and if anyone goes to the home games, it’s hard not to miss me. I’m usually the screaming fan in the front row behind the coaches’ bench. I have a lot of pride and love for basketball, both men’s and women’s. But the crowd enthusiasm for the latest women’s game irritated me more than the loss. This year is a tough year for our Lady Jacks but if the fans would just get off their rears and cheer once in a while, I firmly believe we will win games, including the one against Western Kentucky. I strongly believe we have a great men’s team this year also, even though I disapprove of the head coach. His talent is beyond belief and support from our fans is needed, desperately. So please, for the sake of our teams and pride for our school, if you come to a game, get up and show spirit because our teams need them!
