More than winter skating at Larson Ice Center
Do you like ice skating? Do you wish you could go in September? What many students may not know is that Larson Ice Center, a popular winter recreational area, is actually open for more than just the frigid winter months. The center, which is located near the Swiftel Center, has open skating nights from the beginning of September to mid-March.
Festival showcases holiday creativity
If you enjoy looking at decorated Christmas trees, then head over to the Brookings Arts Council for the Festival of Trees. The theme for this year’s Festival of Trees is “Old Fashioned Christmas.” The theme corresponds with the downtown Parade of Lights, which has floats and/or vehicle entries decorated with lights.
Bummobile showcase to be opened fall 2010
Approximately one year following its complete restoration, one of SDSU’s iconic symbols –the Bummobile– will have a new permanent home that will allow both students and alumni to revel in the memories and learn about the peculiar traditions of the legendary Hobo Day.
Students say food waste ‘ridiculous’
The holiday season is right around the corner with its many festivities, colder weather and a well-deserved break. For many, these days are filled with shopping, sharing time with friends and the fun part: eating delicious meals at parties and potlucks. Yet as some people indulge in the holiday feasts, others are not as lucky and find themselves wondering where their next meal will come from.
Dryer causes Union to be evacuated
On Nov. 30 some SDSU students were forced to evacuate The Union due to a fire alarm. “The fire alarm went off due to the dryer in The Union’s kitchen overheating,” said Keith Skogstad, assistant director of the Student Union. Students left the building for approximately 15 minutes while the alarm was shut off.
Campus design raises concern
Options in a recent redevelopment study would create a unique neighborhood on the northwest side of campus, but local developers question whether the community could support the plan. The plan features two 300-bed apartment complexes, an active adult living community – including independent and assisted-living units – and campus gateways along the Highway 14 Bypass at Medary and 22nd avenues.
SDSU honors President Berg
On Nov. 24, the American Association of University Professors held a local reception at the Brookings Public Library to honor SDSU’s Sherwood Berg for 50 years of membership. Berg was also recognized nationally at the AAUP’s annual meeting in Washington D.
Off-campus dining options more varied
Sometimes it is nice just to break the culinary routine and go off campus for a nice meal. Brookings has a wide variety of local restaurants that can offer various options to satisfy hungry appetites. Recently, the number of restaurants has grown, and some of the more established ones have expanded their options.
Three finalists seek chance to lead one of university’s largest colleges
The search for the next dean of the College of Agriculture and Biological Sciences has been narrowed down to three finalists after a search committee looked through more than 30 applications. “It was a very strong pool of applicants,” said Lewis Brown, the chair of the search committee and dean of the College of Engineering.

However, recently, I find myself dreading walking through the Union because I know that I will be stopped and asked for money.
