Welcoming atmosphere and coffee at Cottonwood
Finals week has everyone stressed, sleep-deprived and on edge. For most, it gets to the point that one more second at the library makes them that much closer to a nervous breakdown. But no worries. Jacob Limmer, the Cottonwood Coffee owner, had these very students in mind.
Place to call home’ possible
The Students’ Association passed a resolution on Dec. 7 to support the proposed northwest apartments moving into the Request For Proposal phase. Senator Maria Tracy, one of the resolution’s sponsors, said SDSU needs more upperclassman housing to keep up with its peer institutions and other Division I universities.
Database use made easy
A quick new search tool has been launched on Hilton M. Briggs Library’s Web site to make researching more convenient to all. The online link of the Metasearch tool searches the multiple databases SDSU has all at once, said Elizabeth Fox of digital information services in the library.
Geography, service-learning get new staff
While SDSU says its goodbyes to some of its graduating seniors, it welcomes two new members to campus. California native George White is the new head of the geography department, and South Dakota native Joanita Kant is the new AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) member.
Free is not really free: Fees pay for many events
Cami Bauer, president of the Rodeo Club, is already preparing for the 57th annual Jackrabbit Stampede Rodeo, an event in April she is helping to organize and will compete in this spring. “We dedicate so much of our time and budget to it because it’s been such a successful event in the past,” she said.
McCrory visitors center gets $250K
A new addition to McCrory Gardens recently received a pledge of funding from the Brookings City Council. The new education and visitors center will be used not only by the Brookings community but also by SDSU students and faculty.
United Way makes impact in town
The Brookings Area United Way provides services for almost everyone. However, not everyone knows where to look to find them. Lisa Bender, executive director of Brookings United Way, wants to make people aware of everything they offer. “There are quite a few students who use different services,” said Bender.
State of State
The report discusses the advancement of strategic goals at State and the progress of campus. “We’re definitely making progress on most of the goals,” said Chicoine. “This is the first President’s Report, which was distributed in October.”
Bi-yearly event popular as ever
A jolly Christmas spirit filled the quarters of Peterson Recital Hall, transforming it into a regal 16th century English banquet during the 2009 Madrigal Dinner, hosted by the SDSU Music Department from Dec. 3 to 6. The “Christmasse Madrigal Feaste” -an SDSU musical institution that occurs only every two years- featured more than 90 students performing traditional holiday music in the style of medieval England, complete with jesters and a royal court in charge of entertaining attendees with singing, dance and theater.
Grads rent gowns
December graduation is almost here, and it’s time for students to begin their preparation. A good start for this fall’s graduates is to begin renting their caps and gowns from the University Bookstore. In previous years, the bookstore in The Union has offered gowns for students to buy.
