Four Brookings residents vie for two open council seats

The election for the Brookings City Council will be held April 14 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Two city council seats are open, with four candidates running for the three-year terms. The candidates are Thomas Bezdichek, John Kubal, Jael Trieb and Joni Weber. SDSU Votes will run shuttles for students who wish to vote on Election Day.

Daschle collection to be housed in Briggs Library

The basement of Hilton M. Briggs Library is getting an overhaul, as the more than 2,000-square-foot area will be renovated to hold the extensive Daschle collection. “This center will be open to SDSU students as well as the Brookings public,” said Bob Burns, coordinator of the collection efforts.

BOR director search update

The process for finding a replacement for Robert T. Tad Perry, executive director for the Board or Regents, is now taking further action. Applications for Perry’s replacement will be reviewed at an upcoming meeting by the BOR and other constituents. “The Regents are on the committee, but I don’t know who the other constituents will be,” said Dean Krogman, Regent for the BOR.

SDSU grad to lead city

Tim Reed, currently the development director for the College of Engineering at SDSU, will soon take over the highest office in city government on May 12. “I wanted to run for mayor to become a part of government,” Reed said. “Becoming more involved in the community and having the chance to show students what Brookings has to offer them is very appealing to me.

Frat helps Fargo during flooding

Despite an ongoing rivalry between North Dakota State University and SDSU, members of both of the university’s Farmhouse fraternities joined forces to help retain the Red River before it reached its crest at over 40 feet. “Talking with residents was a profound, eye-opening experience,” Alan Haarstad, Farmhouse fraternity treasurer said.

SDSU going green with Sioux Falls conference

While “going green” has become a household term, SDSU and Koch Hazard Architects are organizing the 2009 Plain Green Conference to promote environmental awareness. This conference will unite professionals, government officials, students and the public to talk about current issues in sustainability and green communities.

Students’ work showcased during graduate symposium

A symposium that allows graduate students to present their research to the public will be held in The Union April 16 to 18. “The primary purpose of the [2009 SDSU Graduate Student Symposium] is to create an intellectual environment in which members of the SDSU community can interact with their peers in terms of their academic work,” said Mary Carlson, a graduate teaching assistant and public relations coordinator for the event.

Students encouraged to walk for their heart

SDSU will host its first Heart Walk on April 22 to raise money for the American Heart Association. According to the AHA Web site, cardiovascular diseases and stroke are the number one cause of death in South Dakota. In 2006, 33.8 percent of all deaths statewide were caused by cardiovascular diseases.

Math teacher keeps education fresh

Throughout the years, SDSU professor Christine Larson has urged the next generation of math teachers to find new and exciting approaches to education. “I tell my students they’re going to have to figure out how to make a difference in their students’ lives and show them how much fun math really is,” she said.
