Year of Science promotes public understanding

SDSU has joined a nationwide coalition of some 200 universities, museums and professional societies that are planning to celebrate 2009 as the Year of Science. The Year of Science will be a nationwide celebration of science focusing on a theme of “How We Know What We Know.

Live wrestling scheduled for action in Swiftel Center

Total Nonstop Action is pinned down at the Swiftel Center on March 26. Jenny Hammrich, director of sales and marketing at the Swiftel Center, said this is the first time TNA will be in Brookings. Those familiar with TNA Live on iMPACT through Spike TV can look forward to seeing the stars of TNA, including “King of the Mountain” Jeff Jarrett, Team 3D and “The Phenomenal” AJ Styles.

At 19 years of age, Kelsey Heer is cancerfree and enjoying every minute of life, but she can still vividly recall her painful journey from the initial moment she was diagnosed with cancer. “I was surprised; I didn’t know how to react,” said Heer, a freshman human development major.

Preparations begin for ag. competition

With spring in full swing, barnyards are bustling across the state. Little International’s mock barnyard is no exception. The 86th Little International, “Building agriculture in the chips,” is being held March 27 and 28 in the Animal Science Arena. “Little I is the largest student-run (Agricultural Exposition) in the country,” Jared Sanderson, Little International manager, said.

Students can find fries at five

SDSU students who have midnight cravings need look no further than McDonald’s for their late-night hunger pains. As of March 17, the Brookings McDonald’s has started 24-hour service Tuesday through Saturday. “There are a lot of McDonald’s nationwide that have gone 24-hours,” said Kristi Boyles, store manager.

Students collect signatures for smoke-free university

Many SDSU student organizations have collaborated efforts to obtain 1,200 signatures to petition for a smoke-free campus. The Tobacco Coalition, Helping Everyone Reach Optimal Health (HEROH), Colleges Against Cancer, Academy of Student Pharmacists and the Students’ Association gathered the signatures starting in January.

Monsanto donates $1 million to SDSU

A $1 million Monsanto commitment to plant breeding at SDSU could attract the next generation of plant breeders to SDSU’s graduate program while creating a pipeline of talent for the agricultural company. Monsanto will complete its pledge over the next five years and will fund six to eight Monsanto Graduate Fellowships in Plant Breeding, the company and university announced jointly at the Innovation Campus on March 19.

Series will honor women, discuss gender history

Since 1987, March has been deemed Women’s History Month. During March, women are honored across the country, and it is no different at SDSU. “Women’s History Month is important to celebrate because it signifies a time in our nation’s history when gaining equal rights was very significant,” said Mathew Wuebben, a freshman history major.

Deadline for new BOR leader – April 7

After 15 years of service as executive director of the South Dakota Board of Regents, Robert “Tad” Perry announced he would retire July 1. The BOR plans to find his replacement by April 7, which raised concerns for at least one SDSU faculty member on the quick turnaround of that search.

A historic run: SDSU falls to Baylor 60-58

A Sweet 16 berth was right there for the SDSU women’s basketball team, but Baylor’s Kelli Griffin would not let them have it. Griffin, who had a game-high 21 points, hit a short jumper with only half-a-second left to lift the Bears to a 60-58 victory in the second round of the NCAA Women’s Tournament March 24 in Lubbock, Texas.
