Students’ Association supports technology
The SDSU Students’ Association unanimously passed a resolution in support of the Active Learning Cloud, while agreeing to a $3.72 increase in student fees. The resolution outlines the organization’s support for this plan and its proposed additions to wireless infrastructure on campus.
Regents change waiver process
Starting this spring semester, the Board of Regents is in charge of making the final decision regarding the approval of international student health insurance waivers. The general policy requiring all international students to have health insurance has not changed, but there have been slight adjustments that will affect international students wishing to have the health insurance requirement waived.
Students have conflicting views on troop removal
Pres. Barack Obama said in a speech Feb. 27 that the “combat mission” in Iraq will end on Aug. 31, 2010. After that day, about 35,000 to 50,000 troops will remain to equip, train and advise the Iraqi forces, but Obama promised that all U.S. troops will leave Iraq by the end of 2011.
Potential positions postponed by economic worries
Possible budget cuts at SDSU are providing a reason for administration to think twice about how they use the current budget. Recent budget concerns have caused SDSU to put a temporary hold on hiring some of their open positions. “We’ve frozen almost everything except for faculty we know we need to hire for next fall,” said Mike Reger, vice president of administration.

Weather conditions proved treacherous on Feb. 26, with students and faculty alike slipping and some even sustaining serious injuries. Mike Reger, vice president for administration, reported about a dozen injuries from last week’s snowfall at a Students’ Association meeting on March 2.
One too many beers changed this life forever
Say you found a stranger very attractive (however you define attractive). Would you want to have sex before or after gulping bottles of beer? Sex under the influence of beer is common and easy. All you need to do is get yourself drunk (10 bottles will suffice) and in a matter of hours you’ll find yourself on someone else’s bed, most likely with the stranger you often exchange smiles with in the bar, whom you lusted or dreamed so long to be with.
Budget cuts hit ag office
Gov. Mike Round’s proposed 2010 fiscal year budget cuts $1 million in state general funds for the South Dakota Cooperative Extension Service. “There would be a significant impact on programming Extension would be able to provide. Programming such as education, agricultural, 4-H, family and consumer science and community development,” said Donald Marshall, interim dean of College of Agriculture and Biological Sciences.
City Council cautious of cage fighting detriments, costs
The Brookings City Council will hear public testimony March 10 regarding a current cage fighting proposal. On Feb. 10, the Brookings City Council overturned the proposal to ban cage fighting from public facilities in Brookings, including the Swiftel Center.
SDSU Foundation raises record amounts of private donations despite economy
Banks are collapsing, unemployment is rising, but SDSU alumni just keep on giving. The SDSU Foundation recently reported it received a record-setting $52.9 million in donations in 2008, a year in which many Americans experienced negative adjustments in their pocketbooks.

That was Africa at SDSU. Everyone that attended the night has their share of stories to tell and can expect more when they hear Africa. For Africa to share our diversity makes us feel welcomed into the community and we can walk across the campus with a sense of African identity.
