Administration building could receive Life Safety Upgrades by 2010

The Administration Building has been a staple on the SDSU campus since it was fully completed in 1918, but in recent times, the aging building has been deemed unsafe. Officials plan to change that reality through Life Safety Upgrades. The upgrades, which will include installing fire alarm and sprinkler systems, were deemed necessary last year after a study found that the building was violating several codes.

Gun bill misfires

The House bill that would have allowed concealed weapons on the campuses of South Dakota’s public universities has died in committee. HB 1257 was deferred to the 41st legislative day by the House Education Committee on Feb. 18. The committee voted 11-3 to effectively kill the bill.

Not just laptops anymore

SDSU’s wireless Internet and classroom technology is currently only available in certain areas on campus, but things may be looking up. SDSU may soon have technology options available inside and outside the classroom. The Active Learning Cloud could provide SDSU with new options for technologies for better communication.

Food stolen from campus dining

The Union was recently the target of three thefts in one week. On Feb. 6 and 9, an SDSU graduate gained access to unauthorized areas and stole food from Aramark. On Feb. 13, a different person stole about $100 in food. A staff member reported suspicious activity on Feb.

Celebration held in honor of free tutoring services

The National TRiO program’s charitable efforts will be celebrated once again by SDSU. The event will be at the SDSU Student Union in the Lewis and Clark Room 262 on Feb. 26 at 2 p.m. The TRiO programs are national outreach programs for high school or college students that are looking for educational opportunities that may not have thought were possible.

Watch out, lot cruisers; parking overhaul possible

Battles for spots and conflicts with pedestrians have sparked proposed changes to SDSU’s parking system next year. In the plan, all commuter lots will be numbered, and students and faculty will buy a tag for a specific lot. They will only be able to park in their lot and an all-class lot by The Wellness Center but would be guaranteed a spot because lots would not be oversold.

Diplomacy and communication key to solving world conflicts

Diplomatic resources are currently lacking, making diplomacy abroad more and more difficult to achieve, according to William Caldwell Harrop, former United States ambassador to Guinea, Seychelles, Kenya, Congo and Israel, at a lecture Feb. 24 in Lincoln Music Hall.

Pannell dubbed as ‘outstanding’

Dedication to his job and to his students are only a few of the reasons SDSU associate professor Patrick Pannell was honored as Outstanding Educator of the Year for 2008 on Jan. 21. Pannell was given the award at the International Builders Show in Las Vegas by the National Association of Home Builders.

Powwow showcases drums, dancing, regalia

The SDSU Native American Club (NAC) will host its 19th annual Wacipi (powwow) in Frost Arena on Feb. 28 and March 1. “(It’s) a gathering of Native American cultures and traditions brought together for the purpose of maintaining cultural traditions and educating future generations,” said NAC President Erica Fleury.
