The SDSU pharmaceutical sciences department is doing research on skin and colon cancer, as well as improving cancer treatment. “We have a cohesive, energetic group of faculty members,” said Chandradhar Dwivedi, the head of the Pharmaceutical Sciences Department.
SD Legislature continues busy schedule, debates several bills midway through session
Today marks the mid-point of the 84th Legislative Session. Over the course of the session, close to 300 House and over 200 Senate bills been introduced, and four bills have been signed into law by Gov. Michael Rounds. HB 1090: Prohibit the possession of Salvia Dvinorum, and to declare an emergency -putting the bill into action immediately following the signature of the Governor.
Unknown vandals tip over and damage SDSU student’s vehicle
When Ashli Johannsen got a voicemail from the police telling her she should go out to her car as soon as possible, she didn’t know what to think. “When I went out there, there was a tow truck hooked up to my car, and (my car) was upside down,” the freshman graphic design major said.

The African Students Association at SDSU is hosting Africa Nite in the Volstorff Ballroom on Feb. 15 from 6 to 9 p.m. “We hope the night will change people’s view of Africa. We want them to know it is a small continent with the most natural resources,” said Derrick Okine, ASA president.
Common read to inspire students
Beginning in the fall of 2009, students in six different 100 level courses will read the same book. Students will read Mountains Beyond Mountains: The Quest of Dr. Paul Farmer, a Man Who Would Cure the World by Tracy Kidder as part of the pilot freshmen common read program.
Song, dance and dress highlight Nepal Nite
The Nepalese Student Association (NeSA) at SDSU is hosting the third annual Nepal Nite in the Volstorff Ballroom on Feb. 22 from 6 to 9 p.m. “We are hosting Nepal Nite to (share) our culture, traditions and foods with our guests,” said David Karki, a graduate student from Nepal and the current president of the International Relations Club (IRC).
SD Board of Regents approves new degrees
The South Dakota Board of Regents approved a master’s of science in physics and doctoral of nursing practice (DNP) degree for SDSU at its December meeting. “All new programs approved for SDSU are in response to demands in the marketplace and requirements of the profession,” said Mary Kay Helling, SDSU associate vice president for academic affairs.
Prayer is answered to down Jackrabbits
It was all set up for the Jacks to have a storybook ending. Instead, it ended like a nightmare. With the game tied and the ball in Clint Sargent’s hands with the clock winding down, Sargent had his layup blocked with three seconds left. Western Illinois’s Josh Rivers got the rebound and heaved a half-court prayer that found the bottom of the net to extend SDSU’s all-time Summit League road record to 0-15.
Jackrabbits continue their Summit League dominance
In a night when the SDSU women’s basketball team struggled getting anything to fall from the outside for a half, the frontcourt players stepped up. Jennifer Warkenthien and Maria Boever combined for 37 points, as the Jacks downed IUPUI 64-48 on Feb. 9 in Indianapolis.
Utah Valley sends Jacks to fourth straight conference loss on the mat
The Jackrabbit wrestling team waits for its first conference victory; the Wolverines of Utah Valley University defeated SDSU 35-14 on Feb. 6 in Frost Arena. The Wolverines (8-2, 2-0) jumped on the board first to take a 4-0 lead, as Casen Eldredge won a major decision over Zach Blindert 10-2 in the 184-pound class.
