Oien announces retirement

Staff Reports

Fred Oien, athletic director and head of the Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation, is retiring.

Oien has held his current positions for 18 years and has served SDSU athletics since 1979. Oien plans to retire April 8, 2009.

In a press release, SDSU President David Chicoine said the university’s transition to NCAA Division I athletics will be Oien’s legacy at SDSU.

“Fred has been a driver of the very successful Division I move, despite all the challenges it presented,” Chicoine said. “His leadership was essential. Our athletic teams have competed for conference championships in many sports, and student athletes have participated in team and individual national competitions.”
