SDSU could see $775,000 in funding cuts if Gov. Mike Rounds’ proposed budget for Fiscal Year 2010 passes the Legislature. “His proposal really is the start of a process,” said Bob Otterson, executive assistant to SDSU President David Chicoine. “Right now, the governor’s budget is on the table for discussion.

Renewing rivalry brings back hatred

Summit League officials visited Vermillion on Jan. 21 and 22 to take a look at the University of South Dakota and see if the Coyotes would be a good fit for the Summit League. I can’t say I like where this is heading. It’s pretty much a forgone conclusion that USD will join the Summit League as officials only visited Vermillion out of the six or seven schools that were interested in joining.

Super Bowl more about food, friends, commercials

It’s that time of year again; the Super Bowl is around the corner. It brings people together for one common cause: to enjoy a game between two teams they may not necessarily care about, to have a party, watch some commercials, throw back some Mountain Dews and to enjoy each other’s company in the midst of a delicious spread of food.

With one victory over a ranked opponent, Tyler Sorenson vaulted himself to a place among the best wrestlers in the country. Sorenson took down No.11 Taylor Hudson of Maryland on Jan. 21, in doing so the junior earned Wrestler of the Week from the Western Wrestling Conference as well as the No.

FACEOFF: Should USD be allowed in the Summit League?

YES! Now that the University of South Dakota seems destined to join the Summit League, the question becomes: is it beneficial to SDSU to play the Coyotes? I say that it is for a couple of reasons. First off, it will be the rebirth of the Jacks’ biggest rival from the NCC.

Budget cuts take their toll on students

Issue: Gov. Mike Rounds proposed a new set of budget cuts on Jan. 23 to combat a monetary shortfall in our state government funding. The anticipated reduction will amount to $58.7 million – with 45 percent of that coming from education. During his first budget address, Rounds painted an optimistic, yet cautious picture of our state’s budget.

Steelers hope to hold Fitzgerald at bay, win sixth Super Bowl title

In early 2007, the Pittsburgh Steelers organization was faced with a difficult task: who would succeed Bill Cowher as only the third head coach for the Steelers since 1969. Because of coaching vacancies elsewhere (including Arizona and Miami), the Steelers’ decision was undoubtedly going to echo throughout the league.

Freedom, a word that has completely different meanings to different people

Freedom. Such a simple word, yet one that has had such a resounding impact on the world. Wars have been fought over that word, and many men and women have died in the name of freedom. A simple word, yet near impossible to define. How would you define freedom? Does it mean doing whatever you please without anyone stopping you? Does it mean being free to choose your own destiny for yourself? Being able to decide the fate of your pregnancy? Protecting an unborn child’s chance for a free life of its own? Perhaps having the freedom to make something of yourself by starting a small business free from mounds of paperwork and government interference? Whatever your definition of freedom, a small government-as opposed to our newly elected administration and Congress-is a government that will maximize your freedoms.
