Do it like it’s never been done.
This seems to be an open motto for Life’s Breath, a young band out of the Sioux Falls area. The guys (some of whom are still in high school) are not only really good friends but are passionate musicians who have worked incredibly hard to earn everything they’ve gotten.
Life’s Breath can be traced back to when current members Alex Beres (bass), Zach Majeres (guitar/backup vocals), Trevor Granberg (guitar) and Cory Luther (vocals) were in a previous band, Free from Daisy. About six months ago, Israel Wipf (drums) joined the mix and Allen Wright (keys) was added later, as well. The guys altered their sound a bit, re-focused their attention and have been taking Sioux Falls by storm ever since.
You can definitely hear their influences (Norma Jean, August Burns Red and Emmure, to name a few) shine in their music, with intense breakdowns and screaming vocals showing their progressive musicianship. The hardcore group (or ‘Chinese pop’, as Luther calls it) calls hundreds of kids to their shows and has even journeyed out to Wisconsin to open for Underoath, Saosin, The Devil Wears Prada and Person L.
“It was insane,” said Beres. “We all ditched class for three days and spent the entire time together. We were all tired and got no sleep, but it really opened our eyes.”
While the group talks openly about their faith and how much it has influenced their music, they also admit that they don’t try to push their Christianity on their fans.
“We’re not here to beat kids with a Bible but open them up to the idea of Christianity,” said Luther. “A lot of people have a misinterpretation of [Christianity]. They think that you have to be perfect and you don’t. Everyone is accepted. We’re all sinners.”
Just as faith has led their personal lives in a positive direction, it provokes their music to bring an encouraging message, as well. As most bands will admit, they wouldn’t mind being signed and supported by a label, but whatever happens, they will continue to make music and spread their message.
“No matter what happens, even if we get shot down, we’re still going to keep going,” said Beres. “We’ve worked really hard for this, and it’s really important to us.”
Life’s Breath will soon be taking some time to record five to eight songs for a new EP they plan to debut in February. They will also play an all-ages show on New Year’s Eve at the Ramkota Exhibit Hall in Sioux Falls with Crash Anthem, Welcome to the Cinema, Sinner’s Swing and more.
