The Jackrabbit football team has been known to give fans near heart attacks in the last few years. With that spirit, here are some of the high and lows of the 2008 football season.
High: The Jackrabbits started the Missouri Valley Football Conference the right way, as the Jacks beat both Western Illinois and Youngstown State who were both ranked in the top 25. The Jacks had two early victories before any other team had a win in the conference.
Low: SDSU lost last week to Southern Illinois 38-35. Jacks’ signal-caller Ryan Berry threw a last-minute interception. The Jacks went 0-2 against the top two teams in the conference.
High: JaRon Harris and Glen Fox are number one and two in the Missouri Valley Football Conference in receptions.
Low: Harris refused to come to the press conference after SDSU lost to McNeese State. He was tackled on an end-around in the third overtime.
High: Quarterback Berry will end his career as the best quarterback ever to play at SDSU. Berry is also a semi-finalist for the Draddy Trophy.
Low: Berry threw five interceptions against Iowa State and made it nearly impossible for SDSU to win its opener.
High: The Jacks won three games in a row – Indiana State, Missouri State and Illinois State – by a combined score of 103 points.
Low: SDSU has had injuries to the defensive secondary and offensive line, which has made victories over ranked teams difficult.
High: Kyle Minett has rushed for 450 yards the last three games and had an impressive game-winning touchdown against Stephen F. Austin on Sept. 27.
Low: The Jacks only had 15 yards in a loss at the UNI-Dome. Also, SDSU ran for less than 40 yards at home against Cal Poly.
High: Offensive lineman Kevin Robling has been named the Missouri Valley Football Conference Offensive Lineman of the Week twice this year. The first was in the home opener against Iowa State and the second was his performance against Missouri State on Nov. 1.
High: SDSU won every conference game at Coughlin-Alumni Stadium, including two weeks ago in front of a national television audience.
Low: The Jacks lost their first road game in the Valley Football Conference, losing to UNI.
High: The Jacks will finish their first season in the Missouri Valley Football Conference in at least third place.
Low: Three of four Jackrabbit losses in the FCS so far have come at the hands of the top 10 ranked teams: Cal Poly, Southern Illinois and McNeese State.
High: Ryan Berry broke the Missouri Valley Football Conference record for touchdowns in a game with seven on Nov. 8 against Illinois State.
Low: Berry could have gotten two more in his record day if receivers would have held on to a couple of passes.
