Q & A with the sports editor Ariy-El Boynton

Q: Isn’t Coughlin-Alumni Stadium (CAS) an embarrassment to SDSU football?

A: No, and thanks for your question. Okay, I suppose I could go into more detail with my answer.

Games are more than playable at CAS. Furthermore, the stadium is on par with most of the stadiums in the Missouri Valley Football League.

Hancock Stadium (Illinois), McAndrew Stadium (Southern Illinois) and Memorial Stadium (Indiana State) are pretty similar to Coughlin-Alumni Stadium.

But it’s obvious – the campus needs a new stadium. If money was not an object, the Jacks would have a new gridiron as soon as possible.

Having said that, what should the new stadium look like when the football field takes shape? It goes without saying that the location is going to be the same place, due to the Dykhouse Student-Athlete Center.

Seating should be around 17,000 to 21,000, and the stadium should have a family-friendly atmosphere. The new stadium should be a bowl, with family-seating options (on a hill).

Money, of course, is the biggest issue here. I have got an idea to raise some funds, but it’s not a popular idea. The fact is that nothing will get done without money when it comes to new athletic facilties.

I suggest SDSU should sell out.

If the naming right is available to sell for the new stadium, give it to the highest bidder. Maybe the First Bank & Trust Field? Sell the gates’ naming rights for the separate sections, field and garbage cans.

It might not be pretty, but acquiring naming rights could be a lot faster than relying on fundraising.
