On Monday, Dec. 1, national “shock rock” band GWAR will be playing at the Expo Building in Sioux Falls.

Current members of GWAR include Oderus Urungus (lead vocals – Dave Brockie), Flattus Mazimus (lead guitar – Cory Smoot), Balsac the Jaws of Death (rhythm guitar, backing vocals – Mike Derks), Beefcake the Mighty (bass, backing vocals – Casey Orr) and Jizmak Da Gusha (drums, percussion – Brad Roberts). The metal band’s Web site describes them as “hulking, heaving, dribbling WAR-GOD’s who like nothing better than putting hordes of our sniveling fans to the sword while playing the marauding mutant metal that we are famous for!”

Look up any of their videos on YouTube and you’ll be laughing at their crazy costumes and wild theatrics. Jayson Weihs with Pepper Entertainment has seen the act twice, once in Minneapolis and once in Sioux Falls.

“It’s a hell of a party,” Weihs said of the show. “Bring your galloshes and your Monday’s worst because you will get drenched. There’s bodily fluids of all types and colors spraying from everywhere. It’s the most elaborate silly costumed mess you could ever imagine.”

GWAR has been ravaging venues since 1985, leaving audiences drenched in blood but thoroughly satisfied. The band is also known for inviting actors dressed as celebrities and politicians (John McCain and Barack Obama have made recent appearances) only to be tortured, slaughtered, even eaten by onstage monster-like creatures. The band also dresses as extra-terrestrial-like characters with full body armor and theater makeup, making the “show” that much better.

Even if you’re not a fan of metal-thrash music, the entertainment value of this show is certainly worth it. Openers include Kingdom of Sorrow and Toxic Holocaust. The show is 18+ and starts at 7 p.m. Tickets cost $18 in advance and $22 the day of the show. For more information, go to www.pepperentertainment.com.
