Jacks win final tune up game

The women’s Jackrabbit basketball team won its final preseason game 91-49 against Southwest Minnesota State at Frost Arena.

“It’s good to come out and win our second exhibition game,” said senior Ashlea Muckenhirn.

One of the reasons SDSU got the 42-point win was the difference in the rebound margin.

The Jacks had more than twice the Mustangs’ offensive rebounds (20-9) and had 57 total rebounds compared to 33 for SMSU.

“We really hit the glass hard today, both on the offensive and defensive board,” said Muckenhirn.

The Jacks had three players in double-figures: Maria Boever (23 points), Jennifer Warkenthien (19 points) and Kristin Rotert (14 points).

The key to this season may be how the bench players, like Rotert, play this year.

“She (Rotert) had 14 (points) today and almost a quiet 14. People are so used to her standing out there, bombing away,” said Aaron Johnston, Jackrabbit head basketball coach.

“She’s doing a lot better job on the boards. She grabbed two offensive boards, and that’s an area of her game where she definitely needs to improve.”

SDSU will kick off the regular season on Nov. 14, heading to Missouri to face the Tigers in Columbia at 7 p.m. at the Mizzou Arena.

“I would venture to say that everybody is really excited to get to the regular season play,” Muckenhirn said.
