In its first year of eligibility, the SDSU socccer team won the Summit League Tournament championship over the weekend.

The Jacks got revenge on the only team that beat the Jacks in the Summit League regular season by defeating top-seeded Oakland University 1-0 at John MacKenzie Alumni Field on Nov. 9.

The tournament championship game featured two teams that tied for the regular season conference championship in OU and SDSU.

Oakland had won the last two Summit League championships.

Senior forward Erin Kasmarik made the championship game’s only goal in the 12th minute. Kasmarik was also named the MVP of the tournament.

Oakland could not get anything past senior Jacks’ goalkeeper Nicole Lograsso. After the 90 minutes, the Jacks hoisted the Summit League trophy and are currently planning for its next opponent.

The Jackrabbits (14-4-1) overcame IUPUI 2-1 in the Summit League semifinals on Nov. 7. Kasmarik netted a goal, along with sophomore Emily Quigley. The two goals propelled the Jacks into the finals.

Lograsso started every game this season for the Jackrabbits. The senior from Ames, Iowa, had nine regular season shutouts and has generated one in the postseason, thus far.

The Jacks’ first-round game of the NCAA Women’s Cup Tournament will take place against the Colorado Buffaloes at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium in St. Paul, Minn. The Jacks will play on Nov. 14 at 3 p.m.

If the Jacks win, they will play the winner of the Marquette and Minnesota game on Sunday, Nov. 16.

Head coach Lang Wedeymer did tape UC’s last game and says confidence is a key to the win.

“We’ve got to have the mindset that we can compete with everybody,” he said.

“It’s really exciting to be here, but I don’t think the girls are just satisfied to be here. They are extremely eager and ready to get back on the field.”
