Should USD/SDSU play in major sports? NO!

Now that USD has moved to Division I you are going to start hearing a lot about how the Jackrabbits and Coyotes should meet on the playing field, I think it shouldn’t happen. It has been proven that SDSU does not need USD. Our programs have been very successful without playing the Coyotes.

Should USD/SDSU play in major sports? MAYBE?

Once USD shows that they can get through its transition successfully, there should be no problem with SDSU and USD playing each other again. With the Jacks playing ranked opponents nearly every week and hosting back-to-back top-5 nationally ranked teams, a team like USD is not that appealing, as far as it being a competitive game, considering they have never defeated a Division I team.

Study needed to decide smoke-free policy

Issue: Many states, cities and even universities have banned smoking. The question is if that would be what SDSU wants. The current causes of our generation, it seems, is to “go green” and become healthier. No wonder so many cities and even states are passing more ordinances and laws to help speed up this process, including laws that require public places or semi-public places to become smoke-free.

Difference between radical, real change

Change: We’ve heard that word so many times this election we’re ready to puke. Obviously, we need something different from what we currently have, what with a presidential approval in the low 30s and a Congress with an absolutely dismal approval rating of nine percent.

Price of gas not as cheap as we think

Recently I filled up my tank at a gas station whose name had two misspelled words. I brought my trusty pail with me to compensate for the usual gag reflex that occurs when I fill up. To my surprise, the price of gas had gone down over a dollar to $2.69 a gallon.

Dating not a priority for columnist

My inquisitive journalistic side made itself known at a very early age when I was merely a boy. I recall using our Austrian Shepherd mix, Heidi, as my guinea pig in an experiment that, though it went exactly as my young mind had planned, ended with me in tears.

Poltergeist on campus

“When the Student Union is empty, it comes alive.” Steve Harvey, Student Union facility crew leader, started working in The Union in early 2008. Since then, Harvey has had strange experiences that he attributes to a ghost. “Little things started happening-things I thought people I work with were doing,” said Harvey.

BOR approves new residential hall

SDSU received approval from the South Dakota Board of Regents (BOR) on Oct. 23 to design and build a new residence hall by the fall of 2010. SDSU officials presented the Residential Life and Dining Services Master Plan for 2008 to 2018 at the BOR’s October meeting.

World has more than one English

Whenever you hear a non-native English speaker, a Filipino specifically, uttering broken “carabao” English, or a version you are not used to hearing, please reserve your criticism. Entertain, instead, the notion that the English language might be evolving, that nobody owns the language any longer.

Should USD/SDSU play in major sports? YES!

Uh, yeah, why shouldn’t they be? I mean, who wouldn’t go to a football game against USD at the Dakota Dome? It’s a whole lot easier to drive to Vermillion than freakin’ Louisiana (McNeese State) to cheer on the Jacks. Even if the game were scheduled in the end of November, I would still like to see SDSU beat our South Dakota rivals! I think it’s great that we are playing new teams, but I still think it’s nice to see the old rivalries live on.
