The Jackrabbit baseball team only got to play one game in the scheduled four-game series against Oakland. They made it count to remain unbeaten in conference play with a 8-5 win.
The four-game series was shortened due to weather and a security risk on the Rochester, Mich., campus where a threat of “4-16,” the date of the Virginia Tech shooting, was given.
With the Jacks (12-16, 5-0) and Oakland deadlocked at five a piece, the first four Jackrabbit batters reached base in the top of the ninth inning. Senior outfielder Tim Hanigan scored the go-ahead run when senior first baseman Tyson Fisher singled up the middle. The Jacks scored two more runs in the ninth inning for the final score.
Senior Matt Baerlocher got the win in relief for the Jacks, pitching two innings and giving up two runs, each off solo home runs; junior Kirby Morsching got the save with a one-hit ninth. Junior Caleb Thielbar started on the mound, allowing five hits over six strong innings.
Senior outfielder Korby Mintken was a home run away from the cycle; the triple was his fifth of the year. Freshman Billy Stitz also had three hits for the Jacks while senior Craig Parry and junior Tony Martin added two a piece.
The next action for the Jacks will be when they travel to take on Southern Utah from April 17 to 19 for four games. The Jackrabbit home opener that was scheduled for April 15 was moved to Mitchell due to an unplayable field; the home opener is now scheduled for April 21.
