Children’s Miracle Network State-a-Thon

About 150 students participated in the SDSU Children’s Miracle Network State-a-Thon on March 1 in the Volstorff Ballroom. The State-a-Thon went from 10 a.m. until 10 p.m. It is an annual 12-hour event that is held by colleges across the country to raise money for CMN.

Survey shows faculty not happy with admin, BOR

From Sept. 21 to Oct. 10, SDSU faculty had the opportunity to voice their opinions and express their level of job satisfaction working at the university. The Academic Senate conducted a faculty satisfaction survey to assess morale through e-mail. Surveys were sent out to 669 names on the SDSU faculty e-mail list; out of those, about 25 percent, or 165, of the faculty responded.

Power hour’ not only way to turn 21

College students have developed new traditions for 21st birthdays; it is not just about cake and ice cream anymore. A person may legally drink alcohol at the age of 21 in the United States, about the age of a junior in college. Twenty-first birthdays have, however, often resulted in large numbers of extreme intoxication and increased numbers of alcohol poisoning.

Text spam growing problem with expense and annoyance

“You are qualified to win the daily lotto, to join please text back……” I suspect that the number of text messages sent daily is growing very rapidly everywhere around the world. As per estimate, the sent rate is hundreds of billions per annum. With its wide coverage, text messaging has been the target of spammers, and text spamming is becoming a bigger problem than e-mail-based spam.

Letter to the Editor: Bill HB 1261 does nothing to prevent gun violence on campus

The hazy logic in this editorial makes me despair of the thinking processes taught to today’s college students. As an example, “If HB 1261 does pass, anyone who carries a weapon is required to possess a concealed weapons permit, but who, other than a University Police Officer, is going to ask to see their permit?” This statement contains its own admission that lack of a permit or permission will do nothing to halt someone with criminal intent.

Ensemble selected to sing at Fargo convention

“SDSU has a magnificent music program, and it needs to be recognized,” said Professor Laura Diddle-Hildebrant. The University Women’s Ensemble has received that recognition, as they were chosen to perform during the North Central American Choral Directors Association Convention in Fargo, ND, on March 7.

Professor helps encourage women

She stresses that women can do anything, she wants her students to make a big splash in the world and she once wore glittery red shoes like in the Wizard of Oz to a concert. Laura Diddle-Hildebrant has been a professor of music – teaching courses in elementary general and secondary choral music education – at SDSU for the last four and a half years.

2008 Legislative Wrap-up

The South Dakota legislature has finished sorting through bills for 2008. All that is left is to see what Gov. Mike Rounds vetoes and whether or not the legislature overrides any of those vetoes. Here is what happened with some of the major bills that might affect SDSU and Brookings: Senate Bill 59 and Senate Bill 201 The South Dakota Opportunities Scholarship bills The Board of Regents requested that the S.

Residence halls to see changes in the fall

It is almost time for students to reapply for a residence hall room for next year, and there are some differences that students should be aware of. This year will mark the first year that residents can claim their same room for next year online, according to Peggy Spinski, assignment coordinator for Residential Life.

Women in Afghanistan face many obstacles

On Feb. 28, Nasrine Gross delivered a lecture entitled “Afghan Women after the Taliban: Liberated or Terrified?” The event was part of the Harding Distinguished Lecture Series. Gross’s lecture featured three main topics: the history of women in Afghanistan, the current situation of the Taliban and the persistent and re-emerging problems facing Afghan society.
