Gun bill does not provide specifics for safety

The Issue: While the Senate State Affairs committee effectively killed the bill, House Bill 1261 isn’t dead until session is over. Even then, it could come up again. The Stance: While The Collegian supports the Second Amendment, HB 1261 is not enforceable or safe.

Greek-life not gang-like for Jacks

I still have yet to encounter a frat war here in SDSU. Not that I want to experience one, but seeing too much of it in the past makes me think fraternities and sororities here are very civil. Back to my freshman year in the Philippines, I was recruited many times by countless fraternity groups, all wanting me to be part of their so-called elite circles of brotherhood.

School systems fail to keep up with changing American society

A few weeks ago, I wrote a column about how my Spanish classes were killing me. Around the same time, the Sioux Falls school district announced they were going to start the first Spanish-immersion program at Rosa Parks Elementary School. Cool, I thought. Start those poor little suckers out early so they’re not suffering through their college level classes as I am.

No more sneaking around

The Residence Hall Association (RHA) executive board is proposing 24-hour visitation within the residence halls for next fall. In a meeting held Feb. 13, the board, hall representatives and residents discussed the issue and came to an agreement that RHA should pursue the it.

Letter to the Editor: Equal sports coverage needed

Dear Editor, Reading the past issue of The Collegian I was very disappointed to find NO results about the SDSU Swimming and Diving team!! This team, both men and women, have come so far and have been swimming extremely well and NOT to have recieved any recognition is very upsetting to parents, fans and swimmers.

Second Amendment rights war against safety concerns

Allowing guns on campus: is it supporting students’ second amendment rights or is it just an accident waiting to happen? While the South Dakota State Senate failed to pass a bill that would have allowed students to carry guns on South Dakota college campuses, the legislation could be reconsidered if “smoked out”-when the Senate votes to bring the bill out of committee-or if “hog housed”-when another bill is gutted and the language of the gun bill replaces the original language.

Sound off: students get their questions answered

The Students’ Association presidential candidates held a debate featuring both campaign teams Feb. 21 in the Union. Presidential candidate Becca Lutz, a senior business economic and consumer affairs major, and her running mate Brandon Bausch, a junior software engineering major, briefly introduced their top three topics of concern: parking, advancement in technology and freshman satisfaction.

Macziewski crowned Mr. SDSU

On Feb. 23, the annual Mr. SDSU competition was held in Doner Auditorium. This year’s winner was Mathew Macziewski, and his charity was the Children’s Miracle Network. Macziewski is a senior in the pharmacy program at SDSU and president of the Gamma Kappa Chapter of Kappa Psi, a pharmacy fraternity.

Seven Students’ Association Candidates disqualified

Posters have been printed and stuff sporting slogans has arrived, but for seven Students’ Association hopefuls, the election loot will serve as reminders of what could have been. Seven candidates-Rachel Lewis (Ag and Bio), Susanna Marking (Arts and Science), Gerad Johnson (Engineering), Billy Karlen (Engineering), Patrick Weber (Engineering), Matt Tollefson (Ag and Bio) and Tim Goldammer (Family and Consumer Sciences)-have been disqualified from the SA elections because they did not have enough signatures from members of their respective colleges, although they did turn in petitions with at least the minimum signature requirement.

35-year-old logo makes way for new

The new SDSU Jackrabbit logo design was unveiled at 10 a.m. on Feb. 19 at the Student Union. “We on the selection committee are very excited about the tradition that begins today with this new logo,” Students’ Association (SA) Vice President Chris Schaefer, who emceed the unveiling event, said.
