Faceoff: Southern Minnesota

I come from the land of sky blue waters, the Jolly Green Giant, and the world’s largest man-made ball of twine. It’s true, I am a Minnesotan. And I’m damn proud of it, don’tcha know. We gave the world spam, Target and scotch tape. It’s the home of the world famous Mayo Clinic, the Guthrie Theatre and of course, the Mall of America.

Faceoff: West River South Dakota

Okay, so I can’t say as many really good things about South Dakota as my fellow staff member can say about being from Minnesota. I come from a land of seas of yellow grass, which is only green during the first couple weeks of spring when the snows melt and we actually have an adequate amount of moisture.

Top 10 news stories of 2007

With a little over a week left in the semester, it is interesting to look back and see everything that has happened at SDSU over the past year. The Collegian staff has reviewed all of its newspapers from 2007 and compiled the top 10 stories from the year. They ranked them using certain criteria, including the number of hits on the Web site, the number of comments on the stories, continuing effects on students and SDSU and the importance in school history.

BEDC looking to keep graduates in brookings

In the last couple of years, a higher number of graduates are taking first-time jobs in South Dakota. In fact, the South Dakota Labor Market found that in 2005, 68 percent of the 1,385 SDSU graduates seeking employment accepted positions here in the state.

Holidays serve as reminder to help

Families crowding into a small trailer with no heat. Multiple families living in a bus. A man freezing to death because he does not have shelter. These are not headlines from a large and dangerous city like New York. These are the desperate situations of several individuals and families who are homeless right here in Brookings.

Trygstad to put training to test

In January 2008, Jayme Trygstad, the assistant director of environmental health and safety and a captain in the South Dakota Army National Guard, will be deployed to Afghanistan, leaving behind his family, home and job. Trygstad is tentatively scheduled to report to Fort Riley, Kan.

Letter to the Editor: Balloons are nice guesture but no lasting inpact on AIDS problem

On Wednesday, December 5 balloons were released to increase AIDS awareness. Although I support the goal of awareness immensely, I dislike the idea of causing another problem in the process. Balloons do not help AIDS victims, nor do they help to deter the spread of the disease.

Letter to the Editor: Canadian exchange program beneficial to SDSU students/staff

The foreign country of Canada is a mere 400 miles to the north of Brookings. Canada is an untapped educational resource. We could learn so much from Canada. Some of the lessons we could learn from Canada would be helpful in the ways we conduct our lives in America.

Documentary worthy stories

Anybody who has watched the 1990 Ken Burns documentary The Civil War has witnessed the “Ken Burns effect” in-person. With a great song, like “Ashokan Farewell” as its guide, Burns fills the viewer’s mind with vivid images and takes the viewer back to 1861.

Big Dance’ causes early warning letter to ’08 profs.

An open letter to my professors for next semester: In March of 2008 I hereby give an early warning of what my actions will be. Due to the wonder that is the NCAA basketball tournament I am formally reserving the right to do the following: A. not to attend class if need be; B.
