SDSU accepts $6 million gift for new student-athlete center

In April of 2004, a master plan study for the athletic campus at South Dakota State was developed by the athletic department to improve the existing sports facilities. Student athletes have been recruited with the promise that they would have first-class facilities by the time they were seniors.

The View from the Cheap (Free) Seats

I was grossly unprepared for Saturday’s big football game against North Dakota State University. I arrived at Coughlin-Alumni Stadium just twenty minutes before kick-off in my light winter coat, gloveless, earmuffless and in my pointy-toed, kitten-heeled boots.

SDSU battles for conference

In front of the largest crowd ever at Coughlin-Alumni Stadium, the Jackrabbits defeated number one ranked North Dakota State University 29-24 Saturday, Nov. 17. As the game clock neared zero, SDSU fans rushed onto the field to join the team as they won the Great West Football championship, rasied the GWFC plaque and received the Dakota Marker.

For the second consecutive year, the Great West championship came down to the final game. The Jackrabbits squared off with the North Dakota State University Bison for the Great West championship for the second straight year, but this year the Jacks came out with a 29-24 win over the top ranked team in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS).

Basketball teams take to the court

Using great outside shooting and a 15-0 run in the second half the Jacks handed the Missouri Tigers their first loss of the season with a 78-63 victory on Nov. 18. at Frost Arena. Missouri took the lead a few times during the first half of the game; however, when Kristin Rotert broke a 16 to 16 tie with a three-pointer, Missouri was left behind for the rest of the game.

No regrets for all-conference athlete

Coming out of high school, Jackrabbit football standout Chris Wagner was considered more of a basketball player and was built for that sport. That was five years ago. Now he is ranked as one of the top 20 senior tight ends on many NFL draft sites. “I think it’s a huge pat on his back to go from a skinny basketball player at Brookings High to being looked at as a potential NFL player,” says SDSU head football coach John Stiegelmeier.
