Playing without three key players on Sept. 28 against Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, the Jacks (2-3-3, 1-0-1) lost 2-0 to a Drake team that has struggled this year (2-4-2).
Without junior Kellyn Farrell, junior Nicole Lograsso and senior Liz Lane, the Jacks had hoped to upstage the Bulldogs with a victory. The scoring started 2:50 into the game as Drake’s Ali Walsh hit the bottom of the net to put the Bulldogs up 1-0. Drake scored again on a free kick at the 61:57 mark in the game.
The Jacks were out-shot 20-3 by the Bulldogs and could only manage one shot on goal. Heather Hill provided the Jacks with their only shot on goal in the game.
While SDSU was without Lograsso, the coaching staff was pleased with the replacements. “Danni Pappas played very well for her first career game and took full advantage of the opportunity,” assistant coach Peter McGahey said. “The goal they scored was a tremendous shot. I am not sure anyone could stop the shot.”
“The players are challenging themselves to work every day,” McGahey said, “because of the respect they have for those players. [They] have helped the program so much in the transition and helped the program jump start into the future.”
The Jacks return home to play the IPFW on Oct. 5 at 7:00 p.m.
