Planless summer leads to variety of unusual chances for employment
Random. Like an ostrich wearing a tutu in a grocery store. Such was my summer. My summer began normally enough. I gorged myself on sugary delights of chocolate, lazily watched the classic reruns of Reba and Maury and hid from my father whenever I caught the scent of forced labor.
Football stadium in need of upgrade
The Issue: Coughlin-Alumni Stadium in need of renovation or replacement. The Stance: Coughlin does not reflect SDSU’s Division I Status. With every football game, the need for a new football stadium becomes more apparent. At the Sept. 22 Beef Bowl game against Texas State, 14,920 people crammed into Coughlin-Alumni Stadium.
Equestrian: Jacks tie, lose against Stephen F. Austin
The Lumberjacks of Stephen F. Austin defeated the SDSU equestrian team on Sept. 22, at the Swiftel Center. The final score was eight match wins for SDSU and eight match wins for SFA in head to head match play. SFA won the tiebreaker 515-507 in the English side; also the Lumberjacks edged the riding Jacks 482.
Dreaming of changes for future annual celebration
Hobo day dreaming- as 2007 Hobo Week comes upon us, I noticed that Hobo Days have been progressing since my first Hobo Day four years ago (2003). With that being said I would like to share with you some of the dreams in my heart for future hobo day. Some dreams are huge dreams and will more than likely not come true.
SDSU goes 4-0 in Summit, earns 11th straight victory
Facing adversity, the SDSU women’s volleyball team responded with strength and beat Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis 27-30, 28-30, 32-30, 30-28, 15-8. With the win SDSU (13-3,4-0) reached their 11th straight victory, with four wins in a row in Summit League play.
NFL scores for week four
Green Bay (3-0) at Minnesota (1-2) The Packers are averaging just 57 rush yards a game through the first three weeks. Facing one of the top run defenses in Minnesota (giving up 67 rush ypg), Favre will be forced to air it out. Favre will break the record for all-time pass touchdowns, but expect to see him turn the ball over against the explosive Vikings defense.
Late goal for Weber State forces a 2-2 draw against Jackrabbits soccer
On Sept. 21 SDSU (2-2-3,1-0-1 Summit League) could not capitalize on golden opportunities in the game, tying Weber State University 2-2 in double overtime. The Jacks got on the board 15 minutes into the game as a Kelsey Worcester shot found the net, putting the Jackrabbits up 1-0 early in the game.
Soccer battle Big Ten foe
SDSU(2-2-3,1-0-1)battled the Iowa Hawkeyes (4-1-3,-0-0 Big Ten play) on Sept. 23. The lazy afternoon brought about a stiff wind for both teams. The Hawkeyes got on the board early as IU defender Sarah Stephenson’s wind aided shot went past SDSU’s Brianna Rogers to put Iowa up 1-0 9:50 minutes into the game.
Hobo Day icon to get a facelift
After the 2007 Hobo Day parade, the Bummobile will not be spending much time in Brookings. In October, the University Program Council will send the Bummobile to an auto body shop in Rolla, Mo., where the SDSU icon will undergo a year-long restoration. The Bummobile is a 1912 Ford Model T donated to SDSU in 1939 by Frank Weigel, a farmer from Flandreau.
Facebooking distracts students’ education, work
The new epidemic of Facebook has many college students hooked. With wall blogging, status updates and photos it is easy to lose track of time. Facebook may be one of the biggest distractions for some students. “I’ll be doing my math homework online, and I’ll get sick of it, so I’ll end up going on Facebook and not finishing my homework,” said freshman Kara Thompson.
