University police enforce policy at last weekend’s cereal bowl

I made the trip up for the SDSU home opener last weekend. When arriving to the game I made my trek to the stadium through the highly coveted “Backyard” tailgate area. It appeared the fellow “Staters” were enjoyably reminiscing with each other, and the energy at the pregame festivities was at its usual high. Then all of sudden a deafening noise struck the scene. Did someone pull the fire alarm? In a matter of seconds the UPD was quickly dismissing the fan base to the nearest exit. Obviously something had gone terribly wrong. I quickly questioned the nearest officer what the threat was to crowd. He earnestly said the game began in 30 minutes. Wow, what a relief that was to learn that we were no longer in danger. Though the officer’s statement was of relief, it also gave me a motive to question why this could possibly be happening. Is SDSU beginning to force students and Alum to attend football games? Will it be a requirement for incoming freshmen to attend two football games a year in order to be considered a final applicant to enroll at SDSU? If I am forced to attend games, does it mean I won’t have to worry about receiving anymore contribution letters in the mail? Or maybe this was a plan to catch underage drinkers? Obviously, the party scene had become too wild for a suitable university to handle. Perhaps if they made everyone leave the area they could catch students transporting alcohol through campus? Or maybe the boosters were causing too much trouble while they were sitting by their campers watching football on their flat-screen televisions? Or maybe there were noise complaints from nearby residential neighborhoods? Or could it simply be the fact that SDSU had something good going and it was time for a change? I understand SDSU is adjusting through the “D I” transition, but maybe they should take a step back and mirror what other schools are doing. I do not recall hearing the “fire alarm drill” going off at the last Iowa Hawkeye game I was at. Perhaps I was too far away to hear? Go Big Go Blue Go Jacks.
